I don’t have the patience to scroll the past 10 pages so I know this is a lazy ask but can someone summarize for me why an eye infection kept Smart out for so long? And why in his return it looks more like he’s had something much more serious going on than double conjunctivitis?

My suspicion seems to be correct.

This is the real flu due to an influenza virus & I would bet dollars to donuts that he stupidly did NOT get a flu shot this year.

Flu results in many thousands of deaths & hospitalizations every year - usually in the young, elderly, & immunocompromised individuals due to chronic illness, certain drugs etc. - but NOT exclusively.

You always monitor for secondary bacterial pneumonia superimposed on the initial viral pneumonitis - a frequent reason for hospitalization & death.

In any case, it often results in several days of very high recurrent fever (>103) & severe myalgia followed by days or even weeks of profound fatigue. There are several very good drugs which, if taken within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms, can lessen the severity of the illness (Xofluza, Tamiflu & Relenza). I hope Kemba’s docs were astute enough to treat him with one of those meds early on.

I wonder how many other Celtics also did not get a flu shot & are currently incubating the influenza virus they caught from Kemba. The incubation period is typically 1-4 days.

This is unusual in an extraordinarily fit & healthy young man WITHOUT chronic disease and/or age resulting in relative immunodeficiency & thereby predisposing him to such an organism. It is also possible that he has contemporaneous infectious keratitis - harder to treat that conjunctivitis. Much much less likely would be a NON-infectious conjunctivitis and/or keratitis and/or scleritis and/or uveitis due to an autoimmune disease & other things. Unquestionably, he is being followed by world class ophthalmologists at MGH, the Brigham, BI, BU or Tufts etc. Sheesh.”

More than likely, he is somewhat deconditioned after several weeks of inactivity.

Most health insurance pay 100% on flu shots. My kids, wife, and myself have did it every year for 7 years, or length of their life, whichever is larger.

Thank you. That is super concerning. Even now after seeing him. Isn’t keratitis related to staph type infections people get under their finger nails? If so, yikes! That’s scary.

Lots of nba illnesses are reportd as "flu", so there's no way of knowing if he had the real deal or not. It's also not stupid to not get the shot, it's a choice. It only protects you from last year's strain when there can be three new ones that particular year. Also, someone I know passed away the night they got a flu shot.

Lots of nba illnesses are reportd as "flu", so there's no way of knowing if he had the real deal or not. It's also not stupid to not get the shot, it's a choice. It only protects you from last year's strain when there can be three new ones that particular year. Also, someone I know passed away the night they got a flu shot.

Based on decades of experience & peer reviewed literature, what I wrote is 10000% correct.
Sure, it is a choice, & if you choose not to get an annual flu shot to decrease the likelihood of a very bad illness, you are 10000% wrong.
And your last sentence is utterly meaningless.
It sounds like Kemba got the real thing - but obviously I do not know for certain.

PS The flu data as of today suggest that this season will be the worst year for morbidity & mortality due to the flu in decades.
