Thx for this interview with Bev, 50-Cal. Because it's saying what I've been saying--actually what we've been hearing and seeing from the Clippers--and it's not saying what all the d-baggery on EVERY game thread has been saying.
Doc has been on Bev's ass for the past 2 years to clean up his act. Doc HAS an offensive plan and gets pissed when it's not run right. But Doc is giving both the freedom and responsibility for running it to the guys on the floor, and is not programming them like some NCAA coach--and that includes Larry Brown's one-off title with the Pistons 15 years ago.
And nobody is panicking--although Trezz is pretty pissed off about now. But as Bev says, we've been healthy for about ONE whole game. This team is constructed around Kawhi and then PG, with role player Bev to do the dirty work, and then Lou & Trezz as the best 2nd unit in the NBA.
Sharpshooter/secondary playmaker Shamet was supposed to round out the best core in the NBA, Zubac as the pro forma 7-foot starter in the middle, and then J-Myke and Harkless as 6'9" swingmen seemed a 9-deep rotation, with McGruder as the 10th for maybe a couple minutes in Doc's back pocket. And Patterson as our Willie Green, a safety net for injuries.
At the moment, Shamet is shtt, the NBA is speeding up and starting to speed past Zubac, J-Myke only shows up on some nights, and Harkless can be on the floor for 5 minutes at a time without troubling the scorekeeper with a single point, rebound, assist or steal.
And McGruder and Patterson are exceeding expectations only because nothing is expected of them.
The NBA is a players' league. Popovich's are 14-20. He didn't turn into an idiot overnight. And we're 26-12, despite being fully healthy only ONCE, and playing the 4th toughest schedule. Our top 5 are rock-solid. The next 5 not so much.
So stay tuned. They say it's easier to fire the coach than fire the whole team. But it's a fckuvalot easier to fire the back of your bench.
