Re: WELCOME DEANDRE AYTON!!!!
Does anyone actually think 9 FTA's in 178min of playing time is acceptable? Is the guy just soft and afraid of contact? Or is Monty somehow using him wrong?
The guy averaged an embarrassing 3.1 FTA last season playing 30mpg. This season he's at 1.8 FTA in roughly the same amount of minutes. There are scrub centers on other teams and even they are getting to the line more often. This can't go on.

Whatever “it” is .... he just doesn’t have it !!!
I hope he proves us wrong but, I would be shopping him the next time a disgruntled all star becomes available!
He’s going to be a career 17 and 12 guy (which is good). However, it’s not exactly what you want from a number 1 pick !!!! Hell he hasn’t even had 20 points in a single game yet ....
He is a big time disappointment!!!! Building around him and book is going to take us NOWHERE

But we knew when drafting him what he was. I never understood the "Bully" name because that wasn't how he played in college. I was worried about him being lost on D, giving weak screening, and just being kind of soft offensively in college, but he has definitely improved loads on D and a bit on screens..he doesn't set hard screens but he does get in better position.
I just don't know what people were expecting based on what he showed before coming out. It wasn't like he was MVP of college basketball or some other league winning the championship or anything like that. But a first round exit in a 64 team field against a small school.

It's troubling. Its especially frustrating since he can make FTs.lilfishi22 wrote:Does anyone actually think 9 FTA's in 178min of playing time is acceptable? Is the guy just soft and afraid of contact? Or is Monty somehow using him wrong?

He’s avoiding physical contact. That tweet from Zach Lowe about Ayton having the shortest amount of time between the ball touching his hand and the ball being shot couldn’t be more accurate.
There’s a huge difference in how Towns and Embiid play offensively and how Ayton plays.
Ayton basically wants to be used a Clint Capela type player offensively, I don’t think he realizes that being drafted #1 overall comes with higher expectations than just finishing lobs and rebounding.

He ruined playing with Baynes by being scared to shoot wide open 3s even though he keeps shooting them (and making them) nonstop in practice and shoot arounds.

Well Baynes was playing PF on offense and was shooting 3s...Baynes was playing correctly on offense stretching the floor. It was just that our wings and everyone else kept trying to drive inside even if their were 2-3 defenders in the paint.
At least he admits he needs to get to the line more. Easier said than done though.

If Ayton shot 3s, I think he probably makes them at a better clip than Baynes has been shooting. Baynes is at like 27% from 3 since returning from the hip flexor I believe.

I doubt it, but who knows? So you'd rather Baynes play inside offensively and Ayton play out at the 3 pt line?

How about we trade Baynes while there are still contenders who think he could be the missing piece?

I don’t think it has to one or the other all the time.
When New Orleans played with both Cousins and Davis, they alternated having one of them in the paint/being the roll man on pick & rolls and having the other on the perimeter.
It’s not like Ayton is some great post player that we can just throw the ball down to and he gets buckets or something.
I would alternate it like the Pelicans did. And yes I know Cousins and Davis are infinitely more talented than Ayton and Baynes but even if it can work to a much lesser degree, it’s still better than what we currently have.

For who? I think they want a few vets that the young guys can learn from...at least that's why they said they traded for him (and to get Jerome). If he wants out that will be a different story...not sure if that's the case. He's one of the couple of guys that talks on the floor to direct the defense.

They've only played two games together, so if it continues I'd give it time, but not even sure if it will continue.

Re: WELCOME DEANDRE AYTON!!!!
Maybe it's just me but it annoys me that it took Ayton's fadeaway to not hit with consistency for him to think he needs to get to the line. Like hey dude, you're 7ft 250lbs, you should be an and1 threat in the block anytime you're in the paint.

At least he is acknowledging the issue and wants to make changes. I remember that our previous draft picks (that were awful players) would just complain about their playing time.

There is only one C who takes over 6 free throws a game. Next best is 5.59. Most of the next top tier is between maybe 4.5-5.5 attempts per game. I know he's absurdly low this year, and was just under 3 attempts per game last year, but I assume he will hit that top tier range after Embiid and get to over 4 free throws a game at some point this year.
