Jameis Winston

Let’s have a discussion about his season. Good or bad? Let’s do our best to try to keep things more fact based than opinion based even though I’m sure some opinions will make it in. For instance, my opinion is that Winston and the Bucs receivers did an exceptional job.

We all know that Winston had the most yards and 2nd most TD’s in the league. We also know that he threw the most ints in the league.

What people don’t see is the fact that the team could NOT run the football. The Bucs ranked 24th in rushing yards and 28th in yards per carry. The inability to run the ball leads to longer 2nd and 3rd down attempts. The inability to run the ball required Winston to pass the ball 630 times this season.

I’ll also point out that the Bucs OL came into the league ranked 24th in the league. Winston dropped back the most times in the NFL behind such a poor line which led to 47 sacks this season.

In summary, Winston was asked to line up behind a poor OL and asked to throw the ball the most times in the NFL without a running game. He faced defensive coverage and rush schemes that were 100% focused on stopping the pass and still threw for 5,000+ yards and 30+ TD’s.

Thoughts?

I'm a big fan of Winston. Also, let's not forget that both of his top 2 receivers got injured and he still managed to produce. The Bucs screwed themselves several years ago when they passed up on Dalvin Cook, and even before that they did him a disservice when they neglected to address their offensive line. In 2021 I can see Winston ending up playing for a team like the Saints or the Chargers and taking them deep in the playoffs. If Jimmy G didn't bounce back from his knee surgery by playing, I would have advocated for signing him in 2021.

He hasn't been good, but I always liked Tannehill too. He looked like a bust in Miami, and now he looks like one of the better QBs in the league. Maybe he could succeed with another team.

That said, I'm doubtful either way. He doesn't seem to have it.

He has talent but those turnovers are killers.

Are most of his interceptions coming from high reward, high risk throws or from just careless but what should be routine throws, like those under 10-15 yards which are undercut for pick 6s?
