Is it time to seriously consider trading Luke Kennard?

Post#1 » by Kaboom3 » Thu Jan 9, 2020 11:18 pm

I get it, he's talented offensively, but you have to begin to wonder at this point if the Kennard from earlier this season is his ceiling, especially considering how often he is injured. A 23/24 year old with iffy knees is a red flag, sorry it just is. Throw in the defensive liability when he is healthy and I firmly believe that it is in the Pistons best interests to not label this guy as untouchable / a focal point of their rebuild and explore a deal. You know that playoff teams are interested in his shooting off the bench, my guess is that he could bring a very good return. Just my thoughts.

Absolutely not...

He is in the middle of having a semi-breakout season and still has another year on his rookie deal. Iffy knees? Its tendinitis for crying out loud. The very last thing we should be doing is trading our best young players still on their rookie deals...

I mentioned this in another thread a couple days ago.

I personally see absolutely no reason why Kennard shouldn't be shopped. He's due for an extension soon, and will be hitting a market that looks to be flooded with available cash.

Now, I'm not saying give him away, but he certainly is far from untouchable. Luke Kennard on a $20+ Mil/season contract is not an asset. Teams offer crazy contracts to restricted FA's sometimes, especially if they strike out on the bigger names.

In that other post I mentioned that the best trade scenario for Kennnard might be packaging him with Detroit's 1st to move up the draft board. Lets say that GSW gets #3, and Detroit has #8. I could see GSW being ammenable to that type of deal as they would be more interested in win now help going into next season.

No. We'd never get full value if we tried to trade him now during or immediately after his injury.

Even if we wanted to trade him (which I think is a bad idea anyways) his injury really couldn't have come at a worse time.

I think even in the trade case you need to wait until this off-season.

Just curious. Should we shop Brown?

Of course, I could see a team wanting him as sweetener in a Drummond deal.

Brown has actually shown enough improvement this year for me to be okay hanging onto him to see how much better he can get. Obviously you know I want to keep Kennard haha.

Yeah, I would think so, but...

...you're gonna receive a lot of pushback because people are excited that he's finally starting to contribute.

We have some talented young players that can play, ie. Sekou, Kennard, Wood, Svi, Brown. And instead of adding a pt. guard, power forward and a high bb IQ center, some want to start trading talent we have. Add to them, do not subtract from them. How many have we traded away in the past that we got rid of only to see them blossom elsewhere? Trade Kennard and we'll regret it.

Should we trade Sekou too? We'll need to extend him in a few years..........

Luke for Kuzma. Lakers might initially scoff at the offer but when examining each player’s fit, Luke fits much better with Lebron and AD. Kuzma is the odd man out and AD will continue to stunt his growth. Kennard fans should want to see what he could possibly do on a contending Lebron team.
In Detroit, Kuzma and Sekou can lead the rebuild. They could be used interchangeably and could potentially become a dominant one-two punch at the forward position. The length would be incredible. I’d even throw in a protected 1st.

Funny how people get crucified for suggesting trading FRPs on this board but when we actually hit on a pick then it's okay to dump him before his rookie contract is even over. Lunacy.

Kuzma is a taller Jordan Clarkson. Only scores the ball inefficiently and provides nothing else if he isn't scoring.

Luke has shown pretty significant improvement and isn't even done with his rookie deal yet. Makes no sense to actively look to deal him imo. If the right deal comes along sure, but are we going to look to deal every promising young player for fear they will get overpaid down the line?

You wait until the last year or so of his rookie deal to see whether he's worth extending or letting him go, although tendinitis isn't something to scoff at considering that's basically what Reggie Jackson's career can be summarized as.

But while you're waiting to see what Luke can blossom into, you pick BPA available at the draft regardless of position. Even if BPA is an SG.

But definitely, he's not untouchable.
