Re: Orlando Applies for 2 DPEs amid Isaac, Aminu Injuries
I love the move for Aminu as he was not playing well, is more than likely done, and his contract of 4.6million could lead to a rotation piece.
Isaac... Well... I guess I don't like it because I want the kid back yesterday. It would only give a 2.9million exception and what if Isaac is 100% for a stretch/playoff run?..
I know back in the day a player would sometimes come back and play after a team had been granted an injury exception... Is this still possible or have they closed that loophole?
If it means no chance Isaac comes back, then I don't like it... But mostly because that just means the injury is worse than we all feared.

It might also mean that FO just wants to play it safe and not rush Isaac back, but let him heal properly for next season.

Re: Orlando Applies for 2 DPEs amid Isaac, Aminu Injuries
Isaac and Aminu can go back and play despite this.
However, they are probably done for a year.
Isaac is out for at least 2 months, so at best he will be back around mid- March with 15 games to play.
More realistic return would be early April, with 8 games to play of regular season.
Is it really worth it rush him back to play first round of playoffs ? It's not like we are winning it anyway.

Its not worth rushing him back for anything.
But if hes 100%, then its not rushing him back, its bringing him back, and every game the kid learns, grows, gels with teammates, and progresses.
So yes, I think it is worth him coming back, if, and only iff, he is 100% healed

Not worth it. He's not going to be 100% after being sidelined for 2+ months. Even if his knee was good to go he'll still be out of game shape and mentally out of it. With his style of play plus the intensity of playoff basketball that's just asking for injury heading into the summer. Staying healthy for a full summer of development is far more important.

Does this NOT count against the cap? If so, and given the absolute need for Orlando to get an Aminu replacement, the only "cost" here is hard cash.
4.6M prorated is a competent rotational PF.

Yea but who can you really sign in middle of a season other than G league players, ones in China and ones who got dropped?

Perhaps some veteran in a bad team that asks to be released?
BTW, I believe not, but can we use DPE in trades?

Trying to get back up to speed on the CBA these days but I think we only get 50% of the injured players salary with a DPE?

according to what i found , it can
Unlike mid-level, bi-annual, or trade exceptions, the disabled player exception can only be used on a single player. However, a team can use it in a variety of ways — the DPE can be used to sign a free agent, to claim a player off waivers, or to acquire a player in a trade.
If a team uses its disabled player exception to take on salary in a trade, it can acquire a player making up to 100% of the DPE amount, plus $100K. For example, a $4MM DPE could be used to trade for a player making $4.1MM. A free agent signed using the DPE can be offered a maximum of one year, while a player acquired via trade using the DPE must be in the final year of his contract. A player claimed off waivers must also be in the final year of his contract, and his salary must fit into the team’s DPE.

Not bad, so we can trade for a player that is going to be a FA. The other team clears their cap during the season instead of next offseason. If a team wants to save some money or avoid luxury tax, it can be useful.

Can it be used in combination with players or picks? Just more options putting together a trade

Theoretically, these are 1-for-1 deals. That said a given deal CAN be contingent on another 1-for-1. Indeed the NBA has a huge history of trading 2 players for another 2 players, where the deals themselves are uncoupled for CBA purposes.
An example: let's say Orlando gets a Aminu waver meaningfully a 4.1M deal. The Magic could trade a 2nd round pick to absorb a half-MLE player. And also as the same time trade Aminu for another player from the same team. All as legally coupled (but separate).

It just accorded to me that the Magic could use the Mozgov waiver in exactly this sort of "two separate" deals for linked asset needs.
