With the Spurs also stinking, perhaps a rebuild is the way for them to go.

Blazers make a big move for now and the future.
Spurs get some assets and get to jump start the rebuild instead of 2 more years of mediocrity. They should be able to flip Hassan for more assets at the deadline as well.
Both players coming to Portland look like good fits from an on court and and culture perspective.
Thoughts?

Both guys need the ball in their hands to produce.
I’d go another way .

Portland's goal this coming off season will be to reset the clock on paying luxury taxes for with
the Dame/CJ extensions, they will be paying taxes.

I don't want to pay anything for DeRozan or Aldridge both are past their primes and I think we can find more valuable pieces elsewhere.

Aldridge is past his prime for sure, but Derozan is only 11 months older than Dame

Re: Trade w/Spurs
First of all, I don't think that is anywhere close to as much as the Spurs are going to get for those two players. The expirings are nice, I guess...but they only have to wait another year and their own contracts will be expiring. A lot can happen in a year.
If by some miracle that trade did happen?
Lillard - 31.6M // USG rate 28.8
CJ - 29.3M // USG rate 25.7
Derozan - 27.7M // USG rate 26.8
Aldridge - 24M // USG rate 23
Nurkic - 14.1M // USG rate 24.7
So the Blazers would be over the projected salary cap of 116M by about 10M, and beneath the tax line by 15M, for only 5 players. I don't even have to look up the other player salaries to know that the Blazers would be way over the tax line. And that's the thing...Olshey couldn't just cobble together vet minimum contracts to back up that starting 5. None of those players except maybe CJ should be playing more than 30ish minutes per game. The Blazers would still need quality bench. Lillard has averaged around 36mpg for his career, and we can see how that's turned out--come playoff time, he's going to eventually run out of gas or be injured.
Now the Usage rates obviously wouldn't look like this if those 5 shared the floor together--it wouldn't be possible. It would take a DRASTIC shift in the way each of those players play in order to adjust to having 5 high usage players on the court together. Add in the fact that Derozan and Aldridge don't shoot 3s, and Aldridge may not even be able to really guard the current PF model in the NBA...
On a personal note, I don't really want Aldridge back as a Blazer. He was as soft as they come while he was here, was about as un-clutch as they come, and seems mentally a bit fragile. Plus, his defense has gone way downhill since he was a Blazer.

Re: Trade w/Spurs
We instantly become a contender which makes this hard to just play off. I don’t trust Olshey has the cajones to swing for the fences, he seems eerily obsessed with staying mediocre.

The only good thing about this projected roster change is the addition of Nurkic.

I wanna see the opposite of that trade where we send Dame and CJ to the Spurs for nothing.

Re: Trade w/Spurs
Honestly, the idea of adding DeRozan is growing on me a bit. He doesn't bring shooting, but he can handle the ball and allow our guards to play off more. And most importantly, he gets to the line at the same rate as Lillard. He is expiring, so if he comes super cheap he could walk if the fit isn't right.
Just thinking outside the box. I have always immediately nixed a DeRozan deal b/c he is such a poor shooter and mediocre defender. But sometimes simply adding talent makes a difference. I think he would be a better fit than LMA at this point, who I see as a pure C this late in his career.

You know, I hadn’t even really considered DeRozan’s ability to draw fouls. You may be correct that his FT rate and assist rate could be pretty huge assets to the team. He certainly would be the best SF the Blazers have had since...Pippen? Cliff?

Realistically, a trade like this where we get two borderline all stars for pennies is the only scenario that saves the personnel dumpster fire this team is midway through. I said it a year ago and I’ll keep saying it, but having a Damian Lillard doesn’t bandage up terrible roster fits across the board. If this team isn’t making moves, it’s doing nothing right now. The treadmill be strong. I love Jusuf and Z but they’re role players on a good team, their return within a couple months MIGHT eek out an 8th seed, and that’s really pushing it. We are currently the franchise of empty stats all 5 positions across. The truth seems to be harder for some of us to accept than others.
