How much do you pay Christian Wood as a UFA this off-season?
We only hold his EBR's so can only match up to 175% of this years salary so those are valueless. We'll have to use the MLE if we want to keep him, and even then he can walk anywhere he wants.
He'll 24yrs old, never got paid and was more a G-League player until he landed here this past off-season. Now he's avraging 9pts/5reb's in 17mpg. If we trade Drummond he could really see a ROS playing time spike that will further raise his price tag.
How high would you go with him? Full MLE over 3-4 years, maybe pay a little more AAV to get a Team Option last year. Or is he still not proven enough for a team to offer that kind of money - reeks of Jon Leuer all over again?
3 yrs 18M, 3rd year a TO would probably be as high as I'd be comfortable with. He gets his first big pay day and life changing money without killing us if he craps out. If he plays here for three years, he'd be a UFA again at 28yrs old.

We can probably afford to overpay a little bit given our current situation. Would go as high as 8mil per, 3 or 4 years. Maybe even 2/20 if there's offers from somewhere else.

Still have some pieces that need to fall into place to more accurately speculate, namely how Wood fares the rest of the season, what happens with Drummond, etc.
That said, I don't think its all that far fetched that Wood gets offered Dewayne Dedmon type money (3 years $40 mil.) Wood is almost 6 years younger, more athletic, more skilled, and the more desirable type of big in the current NBA than what Dedmon is. In addition, the much discussed poor free agent crop will be a factor as well. Teams are going to spend money on somebody.
I like Wood quite a bit, and think he still possesses untapped upside on both ends of the floor. But with the current state of this team, if his market approaches that Dedmon type contract I would probably let him walk.
As Kilo mentioned, Wood has made pennies in his career thus far (NBA standard wise) and has bounced around on a few teams. That being the case, I think its a pretty safe bet that he will sign with the highest bidder.

Nothing more than Leuer's money with a 4th year TO or goodbye and good luck.

I think you'll be surprised how little it is. He's 24 and showed flashes in limited playing time. I'd be surprised if he got 10M+ per year for multiple seasons.

Question is how much would you like to gamble on a backup unproven PF?

I'd be wary of giving him 10+ a year no? But having him for the next 3 years with a team option will be the way to go. He's good to have around.

I don't think he's going to get offers anywhere near $10 mil. The only team offering that kind of money to role playing bigs was the knicks, and I think even they learned their lesson.

I'd pay him as much as it takes to keep him.
We're gonna suck for a few years so might as well pay what it takes to hold on to someone with potential

I'd like to see how he fares with starters minutes post deadline to consider spending $10M+

I think 3/30 with a team option on the third year would be a fair contract. That would give you full bird rights if he outplayed his contract.

He has a really hard time on defense. He is not worth that kind of money. I doubt he gets more than 5-6 mil a year.

Agree. Can’t see him being worth more than $5m per. Heck Rose is getting paid only a few million more than that and he’s a stud.
Wood is an unproven backup who’s showed flashes on a bad team. We’re not the Lakers LOL.
Guys that want to pay him $10m a season are crazy af.

Can't compare what Woods might get & what Rose makes atm.Pandev wrote:Agree. Can’t see him being worth more than $5m per. Heck Rose is getting paid only a few million more than that and he’s a stud.

The market will determine what Woods gets paid.

He is worth 3-5 per year. No one is giving him more money. Energy guy with limited basketball IQ.

At Wood's age he still fits into the young new core Casey will be building on and we won't have to pay Josh Smith next year. If his play and attitude stay solid through the season I'd offer him three years, $20M with a team option on the third year. I'd go as high as $24M if the market is there for him and Casey sees a good fit, as scoring aggressive bigs under 30 are something we need.

Anything more than Leuer money per year would be eye brow raising. And you'd have to be wary if it's more than 10+. He just doesn't have enough starter-ish minutes per night to fully judge who he is. Despite the per 36 and advanced metrics.

It just takes one team to be really high on him and make an offer. There's not a lot of 6'10 guys as skilled as he is.
