With the trade deadline still three weeks away, why are these teams doing the deal today?

In the case of Atlanta, at least, the explanation is fairly straightforward. The Hawks took on roughly $1M in salary between now and the rest of the season in order to add a legitimate backup point guard behind Trae Young. Atlanta has been absolutely eviscerated in the minutes Young was off the court this season....
With the Hawks at 9-32 at midseason, one can fairly ask if they’d be better off just taking Ls the rest of the way and improving their lottery odds as much as possible. In this case, two strong counterpoints weigh against. First, the damage has been done: Even if the Hawks play .500 the rest of the way they’ll end up with 29 wins and likely end up with a top-7 pick at worst. Second, there is no pot of gold at the end of this particular rainbow. Most evaluators consider the top of this draft class notably weak, with no Anthony Davis-type sure thing waiting for the team that lucks into the top pick at the lottery.

As a result, the Hawks can do the right thing for the development of their multiple young wing players (Reddish, De’Andre Hunter and Kevin Huerter) by pushing them into the right roles with a real point guard on the floor for all 48 minutes.

The other angle here is that it may possibly take the Hawks out of play for deals with their limited cap space. The trade removed nearly half of Atlanta’s $4.7M in room, potentially taking some small salary-dump deals off the table. On the other hand, it’s also possible they could flip Teague for a second-round pick in three weeks – surely they weren’t getting that for Crabbe. Finally, if the Hawks wanted to make another deal, both Teague and Graham can be aggregated since the Hawks were below the cap when they acquired them.

I like the move. An upgrade at backup PG, and possibly a long term answer as well. Schlenk kind of dropped the ball not getting an actual backup PG before the season, but better late than never I guess.

Right about being late. I don't know much, but just because you can handle the ball some doesn't make a you a point.. I only like them in a pinch for fouls and injuries .

I hope he works out for you. He wasn't happy here, and gave very little effort on the D end. He would dribble the ball for 15 seconds and then chuck up a desperate shot. He comes off the books and so does Crabbe, so no harm done to either team.
What's with Crabbe? Why didn't he work out?

Also, cut bait with Graham as SOON as you can. He had/has ZERO fans here.

Crabbe wasn't a fan of the initial trade and the rumor was he would request a buyout.
Hawks wanted to keep him as a vet and 3pt shooting.
He was rehabbing from injury to start the season and he struggled shooting from 3 when he got back, but has gotten better as the season has progressed.
He had a non-surgical procedure on knee a few weeks ago.
The big kicker though, he wasn't a 'good locker room vet' - apparently him and Evan Turner were the cause of the locker room kurfufle regarding their playing time.

Hopefully, they'll both be better for their new teams.

And now... Trade Jabari Parker + Parsons or Turner for Millsap, and re-sign Teague and Millsap for way less than they earned on their last contract in the first minute of F.A. to delete their monster cap holds and use their new contract value ;-)
Add one max contract and we're good to go !
Horford is impossible to get, but we can also sign Korver this summer.

Thanks for the info.
Locker room cancer? Pretty sure they can't be worse than Butler was. But still....Crabbe should be on his last stop, so it's in his best interest to behave.

I wish we could have included him in the deal we just made. How bad is he that your team, (or you) don't want him. We need a PF in a big way.

Parker hasn't caused any issues. Great offensive player off the bench. Defense...not so much, well I mean not at all.

I didn't mean he was a problem. Just why he's been kicked around so much. No defense? No problem. Teague didn't play ANY this year. After Thibs left, he went back to his matador style D. Still would love giving JP a look. Low contract, low risk. Did I mention we don't have a PF on this team? Jake Layman (I know...Who?) is the best we got, and he's hurt.

Sarah K. Spencer: Jeff Teague on when he heard he had been traded to the Hawks: “I didn’t know what to say. I was like ‘OK.’ And then they said ‘Atlanta.’ and I was like, ‘I can’t be this lucky.’ … I was happy, I couldn’t believe it.”

Until January 15, Young ranked fourth in the league with a 34.0 usage rate, trailing only James Harden, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Luka Doncic. The Hawks’ offense ran almost entirely through Young, but received some reinforcement with the acquisition of Teague, who spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Hawks and the last three and a half with the Pacers and Timberwolves. In his most recent Atlanta debut, Teague scored 15 points and totaled seven assists in 25 minutes of action against the Pistons. In his second game, Teague scored just two points in 11 minutes while Young went off for 42 points and 15 assists against the Raptors. Teague then jumped back into a larger role Wednesday against the Clippers when Young sat out with a right thigh contusion, scoring just three points, but recording eight assists to only one turnover. Both were back in the lineup on Friday in Atlanta’s 29-point loss to Oklahoma City. Since the Hawks acquired Teague, Young’s usage rate has dropped to 31.8.

Teague only has played six games with the Hawks, so it’s a very small sample size, but he hasn’t been good. The Hawks are nearly 16 points worse when he’s on the floor.

Some of that can be attributed to him playing a different role than he has ever played. Teague said he’s still adjusting and trying to figure out how to work when he’s on the floor with Young and mainly working as an off-ball guard. Forty percent of Teague’s minutes have come at the 2, according to Cleaning The Glass.
