I am 34, this is easily the most painful sports news I have ever heard. But also the most personally hurtful celebrity death I have ever experienced. The last time I felt anywhere near this is when Michael Jackson passed and this one is more visceral, tragic and untimely.

Same. Living in a world without Michael Jackson was inconceivable to me. Now we live in a world without Kobe. Nothing surprises me anymore. We will all be gone one day. Enjoy your time, guys.

I've always had mixed feelings about Kobe as a person but no one can deny his greatness as a competitor and an NBA icon. More importantly, he seemed like a genuinely loving and involved dad; we definitely need more of those in this world. RIP Kobe.

As someone who grew up in Los Angeles and had the opportunity to follow Kobe's entire career, this F'ing sucks. I feel like i lost a family member even though i never personally knew him, losing Gigi also takes it to new heights as the worst moments in sports history for me.
There's been instances where team planes, buses, etc have been involved in accidents that resulted in multiple fatalities. This is a devastating blow for a lot of people, but perspective should be kept.
Inadequate perception I reckon it's from the Valium

Since one of the GOAT GB mods is proposing this to honor one of the GOAT ballers, it shall be done.

The idea couldn't have come from a more appropriately-named RealGMer, either, unfortunately.

Thanks buddy.

Tbh, I considered a name change to commemorate his passing, but as you say, I'm pretty set up for that as is.

Yeah. I'm flipping between news outlets and any time there's footage of him talking or something, I just turn. Not ready for that yet.

Yes this is my perspective (note that i said, FOR ME) as someone who spent nearly his whole life in Los Angeles and watched every single game of the person's career. Its a perfectly valid personal opinion.

Kobe Bryant defines my generation as much as any individual person. This tragic news hits as close to home, for me, as it would with any other public figure of my era, in my life.

I'm from L.A. I was wearing my "Magic Johnson/Lakers" t-shirt the night I watched Kobe, Shaq, and the Lakers win the 2000 Championship over the Pacers. Even after I became a true blue Clippers fan, and as my Lakers fandom faded... I always admired Kobe, I couldn't help it.

This is a historic, touchstone moment, for my generation.

Gigi seemed like a happy kid... I'd like to believe that for the time she had, she had a great life, a loving family. Gotta turn to each other to get through the grief.

Kobe is the reason I even started watching basketball this day has broken me. I can’t even imagine how those close to him feel right now.

What a painful day it was. I was numb and in disbelief at first, and then it really hit me a few hours later and I shed some tears. I imagine a lot of others had a very similar day.

Kobe(and Wade) were so instrumental in my life. Inspiring me and motivating me with their compelling performances and presence on and off the court. Too young. Too soon. And then his beautiful daughter also. Thoughts and prayers are with his family and close friends.

It’s surreal writing this but, Rest In Peace Kobe. Your legacy will live on.

Stuart Scott passing sucked, but you had some time because it was cancer.

But yes this one is unprecedent

Today is my birthday and while I’m not ever a me person. I really felt so out of wack today especially around my family to where I wanted to be alone. I’m a Knicks fan, and it felt like something I haven’t ever before. I was asked a few times what was wrong. Kobe is such an iconic person globally, a great father, and husband. It’s strange to think of Kobe dying being real. But that’s what life is, unexplainable, unexpected moments like this that have you off guard. Losing Gigi in this as well really was the top of the line that made me lose it. God bless Vanessa, and the rest of her 3 children Natalia, Bianka, and their newborn Capri. I got into basketball in the 09-10 season. And that was the heat of the Boston-Lakers season, so anytime I think of Kobe I think of those series and how I felt watching at the time. Take care friends and sometime crying helps.
