What an awesome move.

I believe the other 28 teams should follow suit retire either #8 or #24 if not already taken

The number might already be retired on some franchises, but hopefully by next season all 30 NBA arenas will fly the Bryant #24 from the rafters as a sign of remembrance.

Well, moderation is difficult and poorly paid, so I won't complain too vigorously. But editing out my compliments too ... well, it seems that all that's welcome here are saccharine expressions of generic sorrow, which isn't very interesting to me, so I'm out.

What's appropriate here are expressions of how people feel in the wake of tragic news, not summary statements about irrelevant and long-resolved incidents of indiscretion.

Don't dismiss these peoples' expressions as generic or insincere; you have neither the insight to make that evaluation nor the clout for anyone to be particularly interested in whether their sentiments move you.

Also, it's my opinion that people often can be more fairly and fully judged after that passage of time. So I think you're flat out wrong to think that his boorish younger behavior was resolved at the time.

It was resolved legally, and anything beyond that is none of your business, since you're not party to anyone who was involved.

But this thread isn't the place or time to discuss that matter, regardless its state of resolution.

Fencer reregistered wrote:Oops. There I go discussing again. But in my defense, you expressed an opinion in this supposedly opinion-free thread, and I was responding directly to it.

If you'd posted your opinion about the price of oil, you'd have been similarly-rebuffed, because that topic is not relevant to this thread.

This isn't about discouraging opinions or discussion; it's about keeping discourse on-topic. What this man did 16 years ago is not relevant to the fact that he died today.

Respectfully, let's agree to disagree and drop it. If you insist on pressing the matter further, PM me.

4:30 PM PT -- L.A. weather was extremely foggy Sunday morning, and law enforcement sources tell us even LAPD air support was grounded because of it. Flight tracker data shows Kobe's chopper appeared to first encounter weather issues as it was above the L.A. Zoo. It circled that area at least 6 times at a very low altitude -- around 875 feet -- perhaps waiting for the fog to clear.

We know the pilot contacted the control tower at Burbank Airport around 9:30 AM PT, and the tower was aware the pilot had been circling for about 15 minutes. The pilot eventually headed north along the 118 freeway before turning to the west, and started following above the 101 freeway around Woodland Hills, CA.

At around 9:40 AM they encounter more weather -- as in seriously heavy fog -- and the chopper turned south. This was critical, because they turned toward a mountainous area. The pilot suddenly and rapidly climbed from about 1200 feet up to 2000 feet.

However, moments later -- around 9:45 AM -- they flew into a mountain at 1700 feet. Flight tracker data shows they were flying at about 161 knots.

to think that it could have potentially been avoided.

helicopters are not airplanes and struggle more with rain/fog/snow.

The pilot should not have taken off if there was so much fog. Tmz said lapd helicopter was grounded because of fog.

Tragedy is not the time to start pointing fingers. I'm sure that if they took off then everybody in charge of the helicopter had a say, not just the pilot.

One of the saddest stories I can remember hearing. I feel especially horrible for the children involved.

Melo and amare should thrive in this offense. If Jeremy Tyler and cole Aldridge looked that good in summer league then us knick fans have a lot to be excited about. Make room for all the bandwagoners when we take off

I already posted this in the Blazers forum, but I'll post it here as well. As a Blazer fan, I hated Kobe (fandom hate, not real hate). That hate obviously mostly stemmed from frustration of losing to him and the Lakers, which is also one of the reasons I respected him. I never would have predicted being as emotional as I am today hearing Kobe has died, but here I am, watching Kobe stuff for hours and just feeling like ****. It additionally sucks that his daughter died, as well as several others.

I don't think it would. If it ever gets changed it will be for Jordan. But I don't think they will ever alter it. It's an iconic design.

it's an absolutely tragic ending but i don't think teams have to do something like this for him. alot of other nba greats have died as well and weren't honored in this manner.

i think naming something league wide after him would be a nice gesture but i don't think teams have to do things at that level.

Wow. This is really sad. I feel bad now for all the times I debated the merits of his career...

Really puts into perspective what's important.

What a tragedy... R.I.P. Kobe

Another way would be to call someone you have had a disagreement with and work it out . If he could work it out with shaq then so can we with our friends/family. Life is too short.

Hm I'm against the norm on every team retiring 24. So many players love Kobe and respect him. Wearing #24 is a way to keep his memory alive forever. It means so much to kids and others who grew up watching him and they should be able to wear 24 to honor their hero.

This is just crazy man. I still can't believe Kobe Bryant is no longer with us. Can't imagine how his 3 other daughters and his wife are dealing with this.

Class act but wonder if Kobe wouldn't want young players to wear his number (like people wear #23 for MJ).

Still a very nice move from Cuban.

His 7 month old daughter?

No. So far it is only known that Gianna, his 13 year old (second oldest) daughter was with him.
