I'm thinking about West being 81 already.....
He's not going to be around forever
wise decision would be keeping things as they are

Either that or name one of the MVP trophies after him.

Change is good, but Jerry West to true diehard basketball fans has been more important behind the scenes in the NBA than any other player...
I wouldn’t be against it, but I also think it’s not his (West) choice (he has wanted to not be it for years)... I also think he would love the idea though, and do it in a heartbeat...
But I personally think a amazing way to recognise his greatness would be changing the basketball hall of fame logo to involve Kobe...
Since his effect was on the NBA yes, but it was much larger to basketball globally as a whole.
And having the best of the bests logo represent him, that would be the ultimate praise I feel.

I would love a new logo with Kobe's frame.
It's OK to keep the current one with Jerry West, but changing it to Kobe would be a class act and a deserved honor.

I don't think the logo should be based off of any one player. It should be just a generic figure that represents the league.
Also as tragic as Kobe's death is, the NBA needs to standardize their reaction to it. If another prominent player dies in a tragic way (won't name any names), will we feel the need to do something drastic like change the logo for them?

No. It isn’t his to turn over anyway.

Re: Should Jerry West turn over the NBA Logo to Kobe?
To be honest I think it should have been changed in 2000 to ring in the new millennium of NBA Basketball but oh well.
As for it being changed to Kobe, that's fine with me but if not that's fine too. The NBA is honoring him just fine regardless.

No. The logo is just the logo. When MJ passes were not switching to the jump man logo.
RIP Kobe and Gianna. The news is devastating and a day later still very unbelievable.

-Its not Jerry West's 'property' to turn over.
-No I don't think the logo should be changed to Kobe
-I would have supports if MJ silhouette was the new logo, after he retired.

I imagine most fans don't even know that's West's silhouette.
Changing the logo would be a pointless knee-jerk reaction to a tragedy. And something Kobe wouldn't support himself.

Why not? Kobe is way better than Jerry West career wise. Plus Jerry West has a trash 1-8 Finals record. Get him out of here. Make Kobe the logo

no. let's not be making rash decisions in the heat of the moment. i don't see why a tragic death justifies changing the nba logo.

I for one think it would be fitting. Just sad that if it were to happen, it's based on this tragedy. But it's also a tribute to one of the greatest players in NBA History.
I don't know if it has been said, but Jerry West hates being the NBA logo. He has been volleying for a new NBA logo for a few years now.
I think he had MJ in mind, but I think, given the crappy circumstances, Kobe makes a lot of sense.

The NBA won't even admit it's West on the logo in the first place because they'd risk having to pay royalties if they did. West has 0 say in this and has suggested it should be Jordan for a while now. Of course, the NBA won't go to Jordan for that because Jordan would charge through the nose for his likeness.

Then why not someone with more rings? Jordan? Russell? How about Magic, same rings as Kobe?
Kobe has a complicated legacy for a variety of reasons. It doesn't make sense for the league to change the logo (which most fans just view as a generic basketball player dribbling) to Kobe. I'm not even sure what that logo would even be. He was a very good player who died tragically with his daughter and 7 others. That's sad. He'll be honored this year joining the HOF. The Lakers will likely build a statue of him. He'll be honored plenty, changing the logo doesn't make much sense.

No need to change it. Just say its Kobe dribbling instead of Jerry West dribbling and you get what you want!

Re: Should Jerry West turn over the NBA Logo to Kobe?
I don't know if this has been posted already from mental floss
The league doesn't acknowledge that the logo is of any person(or hasn't officially other than a digital editor). The logo isn't supposed to be an honor of West, so I doubt they change it. Kobe needs to have something tangible recognized after him though.
The silhouette on the NBA logo—a player dribbling and swiveling between a red and blue background—is Lakers legend Jerry West. Fans know this. Jerry West knows this. Alan Siegel, the man who designed the logo, knows this ("It's Jerry West," he told the L.A. Times). But does the NBA pay Jerry West royalties for using his image and printing it on the mountains of merchandise they sell?
The short answer is "No." That's also the long answer, because the NBA won't admit that it's Jerry West on the logo. “I knew a long time ago," West toldGrantland about his image being used in the design. "[The NBA] would always say it’s an urban myth."
When asked by the L.A. Times about the identity of the man in the logo, former NBA Commissioner David Stern's spokesperson said, "There's no record of it here." While there may not be a record of it in their offices, the league's website features a short Jerry West biographical video titled "The Logo" (which, naturally, is West's nickname).
In 1969, the league hired Alan Siegel to design their logo. They wanted something similar to Major League Baseball's red, white, and blue design, and Siegel pored through photos of NBA players for inspiration. When he found the shot of Jerry West dribbling downcourt, it clicked. "It had a nice flavor to it," he told the L.A. Times. "So I took that picture and we traced it. It was perfect. It was vertical and it had a sense of movement."
