Re: Kobe Bryant Discussion, Part Two
I am curious, do the new generation NBA fans know much about him or those who are 35+ 40+ like us know his value much more?

Re: Kobe Bryant Discussion, Part Two
I legit cant deal with this. Man this is just so wrong. It feels like some huge huge injustice that happened that we need to protest to have reversed but there’s no going back from this. Its just a finality that’s so hurtful and just so sorrowful. I am actually angry. I took off work man And I just was so happy I got this new job but this year is already going to be one I remember in infamy for rest of my life.
I feel like I will just need to tribute my work and live and pass on his teachings and mamba mentality. Its how I feel about Bruce Lee and Jeet Kune Do. Legends that went too soon.

We are sitting on couches in the lobby when a tall, skinny kid sits down across from us in a sweat suit, at first we thought he might be a son of a player or maybe someone involved in the lakers training staff, as he was close to our age, and didn’t look or dress like an NBA player.
After about 5 minutes, the kid comes over, introduces himself as Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers rookie guard, I realize that I have his upper deck rookie card on me, not only did he flip through my stack of cards to find his own, he then took the time to gracefully sign it for me.
My friend had brought a basketball for Magic to sign, when Kobe sees the ball he tells me friend “you should get my autograph on the ball”, at first my friend is hesitant, although Kobe went 13th overall in the draft, he was basically unknown here in Canada, the internet was years away and our media at the time did not cover US high school athletics, Kobe then went on to explain that he would be one of the greatest players to ever play the game and that my friend would regret not getting his autograph.
Kobe must have been really convincing, because my friend ended up getting his signature on the ball, it became as memory that we shared for years, always looking back at how gracious Kobe was with us during that moment and also marvelling at the will and determination of the kid who was barely 17 but already knew and understood his future role in NBA history
Kobe was one of a kind and I would met him many times throughout his storied career, no matter how big the legend of Kobe Bryant grew, he continued to be a down to earth approachable person who was always generous with his time and was always above all, a caring human being.
#RIP Kobe, my friend's most prized possession in life became that basketball, it has always amazed me that you already knew this fact as a 17 year old....
Can't believe you got 14 And 1s for this lie. Magic never coached Kobe.
He did.
Before Kobe was drafted, though.
This is sounding like that Pelinka Heath Ledger story...

Re: Kobe Bryant Discussion, Part Two
Had a good cry watching Kobe's short film about his love for basketball and him saying goodbye. It's just too poetic.
I couldn't concentrate at work today. Can hardly hold it together still. I don't know what to say other than I love you Kobe and thank you for everything you've done for humanity. I love you guys too. Reading your reactions brings joy to my heart that Kobe brought so many people together.

They probably don't. I knew who MJ was growing up but never really watched the NBA till I was 13. I grew up watching Carter, Tmac and KobeElse_where wrote:I am curious, do the new generation NBA fans know much about him or those who are 35+ 40+ like us know his value much more?

Probably not. Depends which age range youre talking about, actually.
He peaked(in terms of recognition and brand) in 2010, and thats 10 years ago already, a long time.
After that, its been LBJ's league.

If you're 40, you were born in ~80 and were 16-17 when Kobe got into the league. By that point you're WELL past being a kid idolizing someone. I'd venture to guess it's the guys in their early to late 20's who this will hit the hardest, when they started watching basketball, Kobe was a star, he was "old" but you know old to kids. If you're 35-40, Mike was likely your guy. You didn't see him in college, but you basically got a decade of MJ and the idea of a league without him likely hit you as much as this did, just not as suddenly and without the tragedy of a man's daughter passing away too.

I do not even know what that story is, and for people thinking I would take the time to write this out just to lie I question their view and value of humanity, we are all a little shocked after the events of yesterday, my mind thought back to the time I met Kobe when he was 17 and I decided to share it, believe what you want.

The fact that Tatum is 21 year old and Kobe's been his god, can answer to your question.
I'm 33, but several of my younger team-mates here in Italy are grown with Kobe as basketball role-model. I believe you can at least lower the bar to 20 years old guys.
I'm Italian, forgive me if my English is not good.

I suppose he is well loved worldwide but outside of the States, Italy has to be the fans with most passionate to him. He speaks the language fluently, he knows and loves the culture, big time soccer fan (AC Milan)

This is how I feel as well. Like it just feels wrong , deep down I am angry that this happened. I know death is a natural occurrence in life but to see it happened to Kobe like this. It feels wrong. I mean his life is not better then anybody else’s but he did have an influence on millions of people positively. As I’m sitting here typing this it still hasn’t hit me that he’s actually gone. People are not even going to be able to mourn over his body in a cascot.

When do we get to discuss the entirety of his career and life?
After the funeral?

Kobe just seemed almost immortal. I am gonna miss my dude greatly. I didn't know him nor did he know me but he had a big impact on my life in terms of inspiration.
Again, may the Lord forgive any of his sins and give him a place in heaven.

Re: Kobe Bryant Discussion, Part Two
Been trying to process this since I heard the news yesterday. It's been near impossible to get anything done today with this weighing heavily. I know I didn't know Kobe personally, but he was a part of my life all the same. I'm a few years younger but I've been following him since he was the next big thing from Lower Merion. He went from villain to me in the 2001 Finals to my favorite player to follow and root for. I don't want to accept that he's gone. This one is going to be a tough one to get over.
Losing Gianna and the others makes this an even tougher pill to swallow. Knowing that his wife and daughters will have to go on without them, especially that the two youngest have to grow up not knowing them hits especially close to my heart as a father of a young daughter. I hope that they and everyone who lost someone in this tragedy find peace. And if there is one takeaway, don't rush through life. Enjoy your time with the ones you love and make sure you tell them how you feel while they're still here.
