Kobe as the new NBA logo?

Post#1 » by XXBKXX » Tue Jan 28, 2020 6:22 am

Theres a petition floating around on change.org to update the NBA logo to Kobe instead of West.

The petition already has 1.4M approvers and growing. Would you support this? And if so, which iconic Kobe picture would you want as the logo?

To me there are two ICONIC Kobe Pictures:

1) the picture of Kobe from the back raising the #1 finger when getting taken out of his 81 pt game.

2) Kobe standing on the scorers table hplding his arms out after winning Game 7 against the celts

(EDIT: After pre-emptively posting this topic, I just realized for some reason I dont have permission to post pictures? ) Apologies for not posting the pictures

What will the silhouette be of? Him pump faking three times then jacking up a difficult shot while being guarded by 5 opponent players?

I think this is the right move.

The nba icon is perfect as is though, so it would have to be the perfect picture

There are pics of Kobe on google images that have the same pose as the Jerry West logo but at a reverse angle. You can tell by the silloutte that it is Kobe

Listen, I know this was a shock, and is just a horrible, horrible day for Kobe fans, and fans of basketball. But this is a massive multi-billion dollar enterprise here, and it can't get sucked into the moment like this.

If you 'universally' retire his jersey number....what do you do when Jordan dies? Even if it's old age? And then what about Magic, Bird, Kareem.....see the problem? What happens if someone not so huge (Lets take Paul George as a perfect example of someone who's a star...but not a "STAR") what if something happens to him? Are you gonna say he's not so important??? EFF him?? No you cant. So now your retiring his Jersey....and on and on.

When Jordan passes...does he now get to be the Logo? And then Shaq? How come Wilt didn't get to be the logo? Bill Russell is getting up there....he's really huge in NBA lore...so does Kobe get to be Logo for a couple years, and then Bill gets it when he passes??

In this fit of passion, and the moment, your wrecking what it means to have something truly special. Baseball retired Robinson's jersey because he stood for a moment when we all grew as a people. Let's really keep that special.

If Kobe get's his jersey retired....and then Paul George (just an example folks!!) what happens when some bench guy on Dallas get's killed by a drunk driver?? A precedent has been set now, right?

I am as saddened and truly in shock as the next guy, but let's not have the moment lead us off. The NBA can't be switching logo's every 6 months. Kobe has 2 jersey's retired for the Lakers. He will surely get a statue. And we all have 20 years of memories. Let's leave the Logo alone, leave staples alone. And leave #24 as something special for the Lakers, and LA.

Fair enough. I think the flinch one is hideous.
It’s not a basketball move, the red/blue is unbalanced, you can’t tell what’s going on (unless you know) and it has 2 bodies at a strange angle. It looks like someone pouring a bowl of water on a 2nd person... Kobe in that picture doesn’t even look human. It looks like a strange peninsula on a map (Sardinia, it looks like the island of Sardinia)

Which is why I had to search til I found this one.

It’s clean
It’s clearly a basketball move
It keeps the spirit of the original
It’s clearly Kobe (swimming in his 3XL jersey)
It has the right balance of colors

This is not a good idea and a bad move. This is too much of a knee jerk reaction. We should wait. Maybe after 5 years and if a majority of NBA fans still feel this way, then yes, change the logo, but doing it just a day after is too much of a knee jerk reaction.

Honestly, what about the WNBA MVP Trophy being named the "Bryant MVP Trophy"...

Kobe had become a real advocate of the women's game... largely, through his daughter Gianna. So the name "Bryant" could represent the Father/Daughter aspect in a way.

I love Jerry West and I think he is the greatest Laker for his service to the organization well beyond his playing days but I think it's time the league logo represented the demographic of the current players. Whether it's Jordan, Kobe or LeBron it's time for a change and I'd much rather it happens during West's time so he can do the official handover and change of guard.

Hi All,

There are of course many different ways available how to celebrate Kobe's memory by integrating it with the formal NBA tradition.

As to e.g. retiring Kobe numbers by specific players or franchises - or, on the other hand, adopting by players numbers related to Kobe - I have one simple advice: all of them should celebrate KB's memory however the * they want.

As to the idea mentioned in the OP, it's certainly not bad.
Nonetheless, I reckon that one particular idea I've thought of is even better. Instead of pushing out Jerry West (another Lakers great, on similar level to Kobe, but less lucky than him in his player career) as a NBA logo (which is not even personalized and never will be, it is just a silhouette), why not to add something completely new and make KB a patron of All-Star Game MVP award?

Look at Kobe's impressive resume here.

ASG MVP - 4 times (all-time leader together with Bob Pettit; Oscar, MJ and LeBron had 3 MVPs each).

All-Star Game selections - 18 (second only to Kareem, who however was not ASG MVP even once).

Consecutive ASG selections - 18 (most ever).

All-Star Games actually played - 15 (again, second only to Kareem).

ASG started - 15 (tied for 1st with LeBron).

Slam-Dunk Contest Champion - 1.

Points scored - 238 (second most after LeBron, MJ is 3rd and Kareem 4th).

The youngest player to both play and start in All-Star Game.

With all these accolades and multiple highlight moments we remember from his All-Star Weekends, Kobe is the most accomplished ASG participant ever so far. So he definitely deserves re-branding ASG MVP to Kobe Bryant NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award.

Just like NBA Finals MVP was branded as Bill Russell NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award (Russell would have at least 9 of those awards if established earlier).

What do you think about it?

Love Kobe.... not a fan of this... and especially not a fan of using Kobe to disguise a PC effort.... and before anyone goes on a rant... I'm of the same "demographic" as Kobe, I just don't speak Italian.

I think the league could do something like name the All Star MVP award after him or even the MVP award. The logo is iconic and once you start down that road how long before it's changed by a future generation when another tragedy strikes or another cause is deemed more important?

For what it's worth... the championship trophy is named after O'Bryan who provided 1/10,000th the value David Stern did for the game. Are we renaming it for Stern?

In the end.... you can bet that Kobe wouldn't lose a second of sleep over this and most likely would scoff at it if he were here to see it. The guy lived a life to excel at the game... and the more I hear about him... I'm convinced he had no ego at all about being immortalized by it after his death.

No to the logo change, yes to this ^^^^.

There are a few guys that would be ahead of Kobe on the NBA logo silhouette possible change.
