This shouldn't have happened, and it's a stark reminder for everyone that life truly is a game of inches.

Crazy to think how long he was a part of this culture. Like I've mentioned before, I had these shoes as a boy. I was maybe 11 years old, just a little younger than Gianna...

Black Watch and Hamyltowne, my former usernames, are tartan patterns. Nothing to do with any race or any city.

Aaaand I’m tearing up again. Love stuff like this. As I get older, I realize moments like that are irreplaceable and mean everything to those kids. The fact he passed a week later is incredibly sad, but glad Kobe got to give him what I’m sure was the greatest moment of his all too short life. We lost a good one man. Kobe was larger than life.

Yup, last they talked was Kobe's retirement game. That's wild.

And also Shaq, man that dude's going through a lot. Losing his younger sister, now Kobe, all not too far apart from each other. Hope things get better for 'em.

could've sworn they did an interview together after that.

You mean this one? I remembered it too. It was posted in 2018, so it sure seems like it was after Kobe retired. Maybe Shaq just forgot about it. Can't blame him given what he must be going through.

I’m very sorry if this is a stupid question on my part but was this a situation in which the initial contact with the mountain killed them or were they still alive after making contact and we’re killed when the helicopter struck the ground?

That's been a thought that has kinda consumed me in this process. A lot of folks keep mentioning what those final moments were like as a parent. I have taken the view that they had no idea it was the final moments or even in danger at all. Maybe there was a small amount of fear of danger...the report is that they were in descent for about 3 seconds as they crashed.

Really heartbreaking. Still does not seem real.

Who wouldn't want to try an impress another legend with your skills.
This could be why Kobe tagged the guy as his personal pilot.

I hate to think the guy might have been motivated by a nice tip from Kobe.

It was reported that Kobe and his pilot were used to taking risks. This is from the New York post:

Kobe used a chopper to play a trick on Pelinka, the LA Times reported in 2017.

Bryant had the pilot do military maneuvers on the chopper with Pelinka on board, and even turn the engine off in midair.

“My life was flashing before my eyes,” Pelinka told the newspaper. “I almost had a heart attack. Kobe’s just sitting there calm and collected.”

....after reading that I felt as Kobe and his pilot had flown through thick fog before. They were willing to take risks, assuming that nothing would go wrong.
So many people who attain the heights of power in this culture—celebrities, for instance—have to make a show of false humility and modesty, as if they got as far as they did by accident and not by ego or ambition.

It’s according to Pelinka too, and we know how valid his tales are.

The turning off the engine in mid air thing, can't speak for helicopters, but I have friends who got their pilot licenses to fly small planes, supposedly its a pretty standard trick with not that much risk.

i mean, Kobe's been riding choppers probably on a daily bases for 20 years, this pilot has been flying for 20 years, people really think this was the first time they've ever flown in bad weather?

Pretty sure Heath Ledger was there next to Rob Pelinka in that helicopter ride.
