Gz for Minny for getting out of Wiggins deal. I am shocked GSW accepted that offer.

GSW banking on Dlo as a tank commander is his true calling and the pick coming back having potentially more value than if they had gotten the Wolves 2020 1st.

This board always massively overrated Russell. I don't see him as such a talent upgrade over Wiggins.

Even if he is, a potential lottery pick is a very decent return for it.

Actually I like this deal more from Warriors' point of view.

I think any defensive loss from losing Cov is more than made up by losing Wiggins.

But russell is also terrible at defense. Ditto for beasley. Anyway you look at it they got worse on D, not better.. unless you think their O can carry them

Russell is a great shooter and ball handler. Wiggins is just as bad on defense, and does nothing well except put up empty stats. The Warriors are idiots for taking this trade.

Wiggins is a close 2nd tank commander, doesn't Minn currently have a double digit losing streak?

Assuming:

C: Towns
F: Committee (Gomez, Vanderbilt, Spellman, Dieng, some Layman)
F: Culver
G: Beasley | Okogie
G: Russell

Buyout one or both of Turner and Crabbe? Too many young guys needing minutes at wing spots.

They don't. Whatever anyone else thinks of Booker, to Phoenix he is the franchise player. He's not going to be available for Culver and random picks.

Man I'm glad Minny did the RC deal beforehand. Why not just keep RC and draft best available pg in a good 2020 pg class.

For example:
Mannion or Hayes
Russell
Layman
Covington
KAT

Hmm? They got one pick, and a much worse player and contract than Russell.

Covington couldn't cover for Towns alone, how is he supposed to cover for Towns and Russell?

Andrew Wiggins was similarly abysmal at defending.

Nowhere near as bad.

Russell has a DBPM of -3.1, which is fourth worst in the NBA.
Wiggins has a DBPM of -1.3. Still bad, not similar.

This matches the eye test too. David Vanterpool has been working with Wiggins this season on his defense, and it looks improved. Vanterpool is the guy that helped Lillard improve from the defensive train wreck he used to be to close to neutral.

Moreover, the difference in athleticism is night and day. I hope the Wolves immediately assign Vanterpool to be his exclusive defensive coach, but there is a clear ceiling here.

People can make the point that Russell and Towns will work great together in a pick and roll (who wouldn’t look good next to Towns?), but they aren’t similarly bad on defense. MIN better score 130 every night.

This is a good point. Two weeks ago, we heard that MIN was aggressively pursuing Russell, but they were looking at a lot of targets, including being turned away from Aaron Holiday. Russell and Holiday are so different, on the floor and contractually, that it looks to me like they were wide open to all aspects, and that was reported as well.

Covington clearly is more necessary for MIN if they add Russell. Perhaps the fact that the RoCo trade came first means that MIN didn’t think they were going to complete a deal for Russell. It looks like Rosas was stuck to his price (as I said, Wiggins had to go out if Russell came in), and the rumors that GSW was declining it earlier appears to be true. I also wonder if the RoCo deal would have happened if MIN had acquired Russell first.

The more I think about it, the more I think GS expected Iguodala to come back next year and made a panic move once he signed the extension as part of the Miami deal

They got a FRP and a SRP (in this case the SRP should be very early, so it should be quite valuable). The contracts are very similar, though Russell's is slightly less, but they do run for the same length. I don't think you'll find Wiggins is a much worse player than Russell, but I'll let you be the judge of that. I think Wiggins fit will be better once your injured players come back, you should be able to start him. Russell would have been a ridiculously expensive 6th man for you, though I suppose his shooting might have worked for that role.
