I used to consider him a top-5 GM. Now he's bottom-5. It's definitely odd for a GM to drop off so much. He needs to get out of that toxic ownership situation asap. He'll be able to easily find a new job elsewhere. Sucks for Rockets fans. They went from one win away from the finals and a probable championship to being the new Phoenix Suns.

This situation reminds me of Phoenix back when Sarver bought the team in the mid-2000’s.

They were a 60 win contender who should have been doing everything possible to add to their core to push them over the top, instead they ended up using 1st round picks to dump salary just to avoid paying the tax. Both the Rondo and Deng draft picks were traded in this manner.

Having a good owner remains the most important piece in having a good team/organization.

The murals are outside of the locker room which is also the main hall way that has the dressing rooms (concerts, etc).
I laughed so hard when I saw the murals in person with his own image on them and family.

I remember there were some posters here who were defending fertitta for putting up the new murals because ‘he’s the new owner and he paid alot of money for the team. It’s only fair he gets to let the world know what his family looks like’ or some crap like that.

Great OP. That was basically the best basketball article I've read in the last few weeks.

So glad someone is bringing this to public attention. He has put so many restrictions on Morey's work and the Rockets I'm surprised they are able to remain competitive. He stretched himself to buy the Rockets and immediately started looking to recoup the cost. The Rockets were/are at a point of legit championship contention and are now having to do so in spite of Sarver mk2. Without Harden and Morey the Rockets will become one of the sorrier franchises

I don't know why fans try to stay positive in a burning building. They also defended his willingness to pay the lux tax for a long time instead of speaking up for their team and putting pressure on the rat

This is an amazing post. Should be published.

I was just chatting with my best bball bud the other day about exactly this. Cool to read a deep dive on it, confirming and elaborating on my worst fears. Rockets have been on a steep downward spiral since Ariza walked.

Those murals are the perfect final punctuation on your post.

Not close, you can **** on Dolan for alot but he'll spend any amount of money. He isn't some barely billionaire Applebees owner, he controls a public company and owns the most valuable franchise in the league.

Kind of wonder if Morey was trying to get fired on purpose with that tweet about Hong Kong. If so, his plan backfired when the NBA probably told Fertita that he wasn't allowed to fire Morey because it would reflect badly on the league.

In any case, I hope this scumbag sells the team. When the Celtics were owned by Paul Gaston Jr, those were some of the darkest times in the team's history.

Jokes aside Tilman's father Vic was an alleged underling of Sam Maceo - a Chicago Outfit guy in Galveston. Tilman one upped his father's mob game by dabbling in politics in the 90s though.

It's funny because I walked by that mural last playoffs and was utterly disgusted

I used to see Fertita on TV shows long before he owned the Rockets and always thought he was a jerkoff.

Great post, knew he was a bit cheap, but seeing it all laid out like this shows how bad it's gotten.

I still think Sarver takes the cake, but Fertita gets to hide behind the genius of Morey (until he cans him this year when they lose in the playoffs).

Morey did the most masterful thing I've seen, moving on from the sadly ended too soon Ming/McGrady years to the Harden years while never bottoming out. They never even had a losing season in between those years. He deserves better owners, but now I wonder if this will be his last season (we'll see if nationalistic Chinese groups make it impossible for another team to sign him after this year, when I think he'll part ways with Houston).
