I'd argue they're in a weird position BECAUSE they didn't stay The Process, they went super all in and made a lot of moves they didn't have to make.
No, taking for more than 4 years is simply unsustainable.
You can't develop players and in same time keep team on >30 wins.
After 4 years tanking becomes expesnive and impossible to maintain.
Embiid -2014 draft- signed max in 2019
Simmons- 2016 draft- signed max, starting next season.
2020-21 season and $70 M of salary is tied into Simmons and Embiid. So if they in between drafted another star and signed on max ( for example in 2015 ), they would pay 3 guys over $100 000 000
And they would still need players that aren't worthless.
In April of 2023 ( three years from now ) Embiid is UFA.
So in apsolute perfect world tanking goes like this:
3 years 3 stars- 6 years of develment and only 2 realistic years of champinoship window, before "oldest" ( one you drafted first) isn't gone in unrestricted free agency. (since nobody really stays after 8 years , Curry and Haslem are only active players who stayed with same team for 10 years).
76ers have good roster. They will be really hard to beat in playoffs ( last year they lost to championship winner in game 7 buzzerbeater...). But Horford shows signs of age and overlaps with Embiid.
