Rudy Gay? Who didn't hit a .550 TS% for a season until his 9th year in the league? Other than that, sure, there is some similarity in style--both plus defenders but not great assist men.

I assumed it was a joke and everyone was overreacting, so i actually went back to read his post history. seems he's serious.

i will only say that i disagree. There's a good chance he's even better than rudy gay, imo.

He definitely is messing around (i think lol), the Rudy Gay comp is what people who were down on Tatum used to compare him to before this season. So Celtic fans started saying it to mock them.

He's already a solid step above Rudy Gays best.

That's what I thought too, but then i did the research lol. I hope he clarifies. I don't want to shame him or whatever, im just genuinely curious now.

I found this tidbit from the storied Sample Size thread:

"Tatum is never going to be a star or someone to build around because he's just too inconsistent.

We have no idea if he is going to shoot 8-12 or 1-15 the next game. Going to be rough when Ainge offers him a 115 million contact in the summer."

JB, please let us know at your earliest convenience. Inquiring minds.

One thing I will note, Tatum is in some rarified company with the stats he's producing. Here's a list of guys who put up 22-6.9-3 with a PER > 19 before the age of 22:

Doncic
Tatum
Giannis
Blake Griffin
LeBron
TMac
Sharif Abdur Rahim
C-Webb
Marques Johnson
Sidney Wicks
Kareem
Rick Barry
Terry Dischinger
Oscar Robertson

That's pretty damn good company.

Terry Dischinger was a bum; those Chicago Zephyr teams always played with crazy pace. Tatum would score 60 a game on that team.

That's not what he said. He said Tatum today is better than Pierce at 21, and he's right.

Difference is, Pierce took like 2-3 more leaps after 21. Does Tatum have 2-3 more gears to step up into? We shall see. I tend to believe so, but not all guys just get better and better after 21 like Pierce did (see Tyreke Evans, OJ Mayo, etc. etc.).

Not many players get trashed for poor 3 pt shooting and poor finishing at the rim .... and improve those flaws in a matter of weeks making those critics look foolish. I really am not going out on a limb here. I am not just making a hot take to get people riled up. Arguing against this in the face of the obvious talent, skill and undeniable results is risky. In fact, the counter opinions to Tatum are going to look really silly really soon. I am actually just being captain obvious here. Tatum is a beast already and he isn’t even fully mature physically or close to as strong as he can be.

When I posted this I didn’t think it would happen as soon as tonight. Dominant defensive performance and elite scoring. Hope we pull out a win.

I think our philly friends said it best, early in his rookie season: JT is a technically skilled player operating at near peak capacity

I think he has skill and talent to average 30 ppg some day.....something even Bird never did.....although 29.9 is pretty close.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

I do think better than PG is completely on the table.

What's his ceiling if he wins all star MVP, Finals MVP, and MVP this season?

Unless he gets injured, Tatum will be better than PG13.

I’m telling ya’ll that final form JT (MVP caliber) will only be forced to come out if we trade away Kemba for a great big man and have Marcus be PG

JT is held back by a Kemba/Kyrie/IT type point guard and it’s not necessarily their fault. These scoring PG’s give him a safety net to not always have to dominate

Dream lineup in Tatum’s prime:
Smart
Brown
Tatum
Hayward
Star tough big man

I'd take Tatum over PG any day of the week and you'd be smoking some high quality crack to think otherwise.
Dude's a beast and is a top 20 player in the league IMO. The strides he's made in his defensive game this season have been nothing short of amazing. I don't know if you guys anticipated him being this good on defense, but I sure didn't. I definitely knew he had the potential to be an offensive juggernaut though. Looks like he's already elite on both ends of the floor which only tells me that he has the potential to be an MVP in this league one day.

It'll be fun watching him lead the Celtics against the Siakam led Raptors and Simmons led '6ers for years to come.
Those 3 are the future of the Eastern Conference. (Giannis is in a world of his own)

p.s. I cannot waaaitttt for that Raptors/Celtics 2nd round series. That sh*t is looong overdue. That series is going 7 games without a doubt (if both teams are healthy). I also think the winner of that series will beat the Bucks and go to the finals.

Tatum has already done more in the playoffs than “Playoff P” and honestly is having a better season than George this year
