Curious what you guys think - If everything else stayed the same (same roster and production from everyone), what level player would Tatum need to be for us to be true title contenders? Top 10? Top 5?

I think if he could average approximately 22/7/3 with fantastic defense, the Celtics could be true title contenders.

I know I have meds in my system, my brain is on SLOW but did she say it's taking Tatum a little longer because of the mess of last year, how they usually see that jump to superstardom in their 3rd year but Tat is doing it in his 4th year? If I'm right about what she said, THIS IS Tatum's 3rd year. :banghead:

Danny better lock Tat up for the max he can this off season. Don't mess around and try and save a few dollars. Not with this man.

"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

He'll get every available dollar and the C's will be happy to give it to him.

Hell I'd try and lock up Tatum on the max this offseason so you avoid paying him a super max in 2021

I don't think he's eligible for super max until he's been in the league seven years or so.

Not how it works I don't think. He will sign for the 25% max, and it will go to the 30% max if he makes All-NBA in the '20/'21 season.

Note that this is actually not the "supermax", which is only possible after 7 years of service, and is 35% of the cap.

You have to complete 7 years min before you can get a supermax. Tatum will only be able to sign a 5 year max contract for his age.

It seems it starts at 29m a year for 20/21 season (this would be JB), Tatums contract extension he can sign this offseason won't take effect till the next year which starts at 30.45m.

most sign for 4 years, but you can sign for 5 with your own team (which i think he will). When they have 2 years remaining on deal, they can extend at the supermax if needed.

If the salary cap and tax goes down, which many are talking about, or at least stays the same you can see Tatum getting a deal starting at 29-30m for 4-5 years with 8% raises annually.

Side note, Rose rule and supermax contracts are ridiculous. I shouldn't have to root against my favorite player making an all-NBA team to improve my team's cap space and tax situation. If the league wants to provide financial rewards to players who make all-NBA teams, win DPOY, etc, they should just do that directly out of a pooled extra compensation fund. If the league wants to incentive players to stay with the teams that drafted them, they should do that without tying it to accolades selected by media voters.

I think all the rose rule contracts are expired. I don't think that's in the new CBA, replaced by the "supermax".

Sky’s the limit for this kid especially when most would consider his defence has been better than his offence this season.
Put 10-15 pounds on him & he’s going to be a huge problem.

Pretty sure you can still put All-NBA language in the contract though that could take him to the normal 7 year Vet level maxes with the Rose Rule or whatever you want to call it. It doesn't have to be 30%, but can be above the 25%. The designated rookie extensions let you do 5 additional years instead of 4. The supermax (35%) applies to 7 year guys that can take it to 10 year Vet levels.

Ben Simmons and Jamal Murray both signed extensions with All-NBA language in their deals. We could insert language into Tatum's extension that will depend on how he performs next year. The Ben Simmons deal has different % starters based on 3rd,2nd,1st team, MVP.

Here is the Ben Simmons details

15% Trade Kicker
Has Designated Rookie Extension language, can trigger up to 30% of cap if earns All-NBA team in 2019-20 season
No All-NBA: $170M (25%)
All-NBA 3rd team: $190M (28%)
All-NBA 2nd team: $196.8M (29%)
All-NBA 1st team: $203.6M (30%)

Here is the Jamal Murray Details

Eligible for 30% language (Need to be met in 2019-20):
All-NBA First-Team or MVP (30%),
All-NBA Second-Team (27.5%),
All-NBA Third-Team (26%)

What is Tracy McGrady doing in the HoF? The ultimate volume shooter with a career TS% of .518 and 29.3% career usage. Never made it out of the second round of the playoffs.

He is a 7 time All-NBA player........... pretty much case closed at that point. You can go back and re-litigate his career, but that pretty much shuts everything down. I'm sure we would go back and have him take different shots during this era, but people didn't look at the game the same way back then.

He was an unbelievable player who had his career ended early by injury. He was an unbelievable player though that rivaled anybody in talent and ability.
