Yep this is it. We don’t really need to give him crazy like three or four years but a front loaded short term contract. I think he takes that and runs.

I dont think we can even offer him that much. I think i read we can offer him 9 million a year. Dont think we can go over 10. Could be tricky resigning him. Teams can offer more than we can.

I could also ve very wrong about this.

You are very wrong about this. :)

Actually, you were right, but then we cleared a ton of cap space.

Wood isn't going to lack for potential suitors.

Honestly, considering the way Casey treats him and frequently checks him in the media I wouldn't be at all surprised if Christian doesn't even want to resign with Detroit. On the flip side, it seems like Casey doesn't like Wood for whatever reason.

If it came down to it, I'd MUCH prefer keeping Wood over Casey but I highly doubt Casey is going anywhere anytime soon.... unfortunately.

Its a good point somebody made that there aren't many teams with cap space this summer so we might be able to keep him on the cheap. That said, not counting on it, as it only takes one team to make a big offer.

Not the craziest thing in the world. It would have to be a Derrick Rose type contract but with a team option on the 2nd year. I'd play him in the same role as Thon Maker, start some games WITH Wood and other games he backs Wood up depending on matchups.

No player option because then it does not make sense for us.

Assuming he’s somewhat healthy next season , he can improve our win total. Also he’ll be 30 and wouldn’t really fit a rebuild timeline. Plus he takes away playing time from whatever younger front court players we have next season

Isn’t Tim Hardaway Jr a FA? He’s turned into a good basketball player.

The list of FA to consider:

Kris Dunn
Juancho Hernangomez
Harry Giles III
Rondae Hollis Jefferson
Derrick Jones Jr
Jordan Bell
Nerlens Noel
Ante Zizic
Mario Hezonja
Jahlil Okafor
Frank Jackson
De'Anthony Melton

Juancho Hernangomez should be one of the main targets, he is the perfect fit for Sekou. They could switch positions easily. Juancho is a PF who has worked his ass off to be able to play 3 effectively (He is playing as SF for Spain).
- Estimated salary: 6x3 (18 millions)

Kris Dunn is the only young PG of this FA and he is a good fit for Kennard. He plays defense and he can take advantage of the playmaking skills of Kennard since he has not proven to be able to run the show.
- Estimated salary: 6x3 (18 million)

Nerlens Noel is another good option for this team. He can be the defensive anchor that the team needs.
- Estimated salary: 5x3 (15 million)

Frank Jackson is a good gamble. The young PG is not going to have minutes in the Pelicans with Zion putting them in the fight for PO.
- Estimated salary: 4x3 (12 million)

Harry Giles III might be one of the biggest opportunities for the FA. Thanks to Divac the young center will be able to choose where to play.
- Estimated salary: 4x3 (12 million)

I like Harry Giles III. He would be a great energy big off the bench and he has upside. I think he will cost more than 4 per year though.

These are good guys for teams trying to add some talent and get a little better. The Pistons dont want that.

Its home run or nothing. Gamble on guys that might get a lot better, or just take on garbage contracts to get picks.

This team is done until Blake Griffins contract is over. Maybe in two years, the last year of Blake's contract, moves can be made, or maybe Blake can be traded for something, but that is still two years from now.

Giles & Beasley I'd kick the tires on depending on price.

Still young, could develop more and you never know.

i'd try to get him for three years. i don't know what he would command per year ($10-12 mil or more?) but he's young and talented enough to warrant planning as part of the future imo. it's a small sample size but since his minutes have been upped to 30+ a game (the last 12 games), he's averaging 19/9 on a pretty efficient .612 TS%. on the season his advanced stats (ESPN's RPM, VORP, WS/48, etc.) are highest on the team, even though he did have a limited role for most of the season.

at the very least if he doesn't match our rebuilding timeline, despite being young, he'd be a heck of a trade asset on a reasonable deal for multiple years.

Knicks are gonna steal Wood away with some crazy offer we can't match because of Blake's contract.

Just posted this in the game thread but since Wood is the topic its suited for here too. I will say Woods going to get more then 12mill per year. Theirs not many good free agents available. Hes got big upside and its not a secret to other teams.

This was from a month ago on the ringer. Since this was written Wood has done nothing but played even better. Its not just pistons fans who realize Wood is really good.

"Christian Wood, Pistons: Wood has finally found success in the NBA on his fifth team. The 24-year-old Pistons big man entered the 2015 draft as a raw project after two years at UNLV, and he’s since dramatically improved his screening fundamentals and his shooting range while also adding meat to his once-razor-thin body. It’s working: He’s scoring an elite 1.18 points per possession, mostly off spot-up 3s, cuts, and pick-and-roll chances, according to Synergy Sports. He’s one of only two players to shoot over 75 percent on rolls to the rim and 35 percent on 3s, along with Dallas’s Maxi Kleber, who signed a four-year, $35.9 million contract last summer. Kleber has Luka Doncic passing him the ball; Wood has Derrick Rose, Bruce Brown, and Langston Galloway.

Wood’s steady progress suggests the free-agent-to-be could be an impactful two-way player on his next contract—which he’ll earn this summer as an unrestricted free agent. Wood no longer lets his offensive production dictate his defensive energy, a sign of improved maturity. Though his fundamentals still need work, he isn’t a complete liability."

Hes getting paid.

Yeah those are some solid options i could get behind. If we dont get Edwards then go after Beasley in FA.

Return to Detroit Pistons
