So markets are down 700 points because Warren dropped out?
At a party given by a billionaire, Kurt Vonnegut informs Joseph Heller that their host had made more money in a single day than Heller had earned from his novel Catch-22.
Heller responds, “Yes, but I have something he will never have — ENOUGH.”

How much do you have to invest to make $70,000 dollars in the stock market? Coming from someone that has no idea, but loves gambling, I am just curious.
Is it like you got lucky with a longshot parlay where you bet $1000 and won $70,000? Or are you making safe bets putting down $200,000 to win $70,000?
Nah.. It was a risky stock that had great potential. They are a fuel cell company that partnered with Exxon and Toyota. They were in a pretty bad financial situation earlier this year.. They s#it canned their management, brought in a new guy that has been kicking a$$. It was a calculated risk that has a lot of potential.. I realistically could see the stock going up to $6 to $10 dollars this year. Clean energy is becoming a pretty huge push. They are incentivizing companies for switching over.. looking to tax companies with carbon taxes.
They also have carbon capture technology which is likely going to be pretty big. They have a lot of patents... Biggest reason Exxon partnered with them.

Looking at the stock, it was at like 25 cents and is close to $3 bucks right now. So I'm going to guess that he put $10k down when it was at 35-40 cents or so.
Correct.

I had the unfortunate timing of needing to cash out on some of my stocks to pay for my first house just when the market crashed lol. Thankfully was able to lock in enough profits before it REALLY crashed, but it definitely was not the ideal time to sell.

Don't feel bad. I sold Netflix at $15 a share.

So I’m currently looking for a new job, but this one should move me into 6 figures annually so my first taste of some real stable money. Anyone have tips for what to look for in stocks or just how to get started ?

Honestly there has been some really good discussion in this thread. Start at page one and keep going. Most people here espouse index funds that match S&P 500.

IMHO - You shouldn't be thinking of picking stocks or alternative investments until you are putting in $25k+ is tax advantaged accounts. Use your companies 401k and look for index funds (look at the fees and watch John Oliver's Retirement episode for an entertaining look at why it matters). For IRA- I recommend Vanguard and again cheap index funds.
After paying down all your debts greater than 3%, 40% equity in your house, emergency fund and investing $30k annually in boring stuff, you earned your right to talk to the weed stock and crypto guys in this thread.
Below is the best advice in order safe investments balancing investment, taxes, and relieving debt:
https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/investor-alley/investment-order/msg1333153/#msg1333153
WHAT
0. Establish an emergency fund to your satisfaction
1. Contribute to your 401k up to any company match
2. Pay off any debts with interest rates ~5% or more above the current 10-year Treasury note yield.
3. Max Health Savings Account (HSA) if eligible.
4. Max Traditional IRA or Roth (or backdoor Roth) based on income level
5. Max 401k (if
- 401k fees are lower than available in an IRA, or
- you need the 401k deduction to be eligible for (and desire) a tIRA deduction, or
- your earn too much for an IRA deduction and prefer traditional to Roth, then
swap #4 and #5)
6. Fund a mega backdoor Roth if applicable.
7. Pay off any debts with interest rates ~3% or more above the current 10-year Treasury note yield.
8. Invest in a taxable account and/or fund a 529 with any extra.
WHY
0. Give yourself at least enough buffer to avoid worries about bouncing checks
1. Company match rates are likely the highest percent return you can get on your money
2. When the guaranteed return is this high, take it.
3. HSA funds are totally tax free when used for medical expenses, making the HSA better than either traditional or Roth IRAs for that purpose.
At worst, the HSA behaves much the same as a tIRA after age 65.
4. Rule of thumb: traditional if current federal marginal rate is 22% or higher; Roth if 10% or lower, or if MAGI is too high to deduct a traditional IRA; flip a coin otherwise.

Yeah, I hear ya.
If you're just starting out I would find some kind of beginning investing website or book. That's what I did back in the day....well, there were no good websites back then. I used actual books

Re: OT: Investing - Stocks/Mutual Funds/Bonds/Crypto
I'm trickling money back into the market today. I've held onto everything during the recent dip knowing it was effectively a confluence of events - prominent banks predicting a correction, overblown coronavirus fears, election results, etc - that caused it rather than something that I think would have a long-term damaging influence on the market.
My best bet in the last couple years was AMD - bought it at $10 a share, and now it's pushing $50 a share and it was closer to $60 a share before this recent slide. I feel bad for my friends who sold out on it back then - a few of my friends took losses on AMD because they bought it was $13 a share and sold it when it dipped below $10 a share, but if I've learned anything about investing, it's that you have to think long-term.

Ouch, yeah I imagine anyone that's been doing stocks for awhile has their own version of these stories. At the end of the day, at least I got the house

Re: OT: Investing - Stocks/Mutual Funds/Bonds/Crypto
I had a tip not too dissimilar to the one provided on here on ABMD in 2010 when it was hovering around $10. I was pretty new in the workforce and had a bit to throw around but not a ton...but it was like $2-3k. I had to sell it like a year later when I needed that some cash. I think it was like $16.
Granted, I doubt I'd have sold at the perfect time as it has gone down a great deal, but it got to $450/share in 2018. It has fallen back to $150, but still.

I started a new job two weeks ago, I'm planning to roll over my 401k and consolidate into one account (because, Fidelity > Wells Fargo, F Wells Fargo), and messed up not pulling it out sooner. Now I'm sitting here planning to delay another week to request my check.

If you're in the Greater Milwaukee area, I'd look at First Bank Financial. Their site has rates if you have all the top credit etc. and they are at 3.25 no cost for a 30yr. Why I liked them for my cash out refi is that they go up to 90% LTV vs a lot of them are 85% at best (say no to a HELOC). So I took out max money, finished by basement, refinanced again and have a lower payment than I started with and cash left over. My last refi was with Better.com only because AMEX offered me $2500 after close and no appraisal fee (that deal is still running if you have an AMEX). Rates hit 3.125 with no cost, I'm back to refinancing again.
Using First Bank as suggested. Getting 3.125% on 30 year for no cost.
Thanks for the tip
Did you have to negotiate at all? I emailed and it was the posted rate for 15 years-2.875, +.25 for cash out, plus $1,500-1,800 costs for the initial response.
I did not negotiate at all. Perhaps I should have?

Yeah I had Wells Fargo at one point for a 401K, as soon as I left that company I quickly rolled it over into a Fidelity account. Can't go wrong with Fidelity or Vanguard IMO.
You also don't need to get a check, just open your new rollover account with Fidelity and they'll transfer your money from WF. And if you do get a check don't forget you have to roll it over within 60 days.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.
