OT: TV and Movies (With Spoilers)

Post#1 » by MickeyDavis » Tue Mar 10, 2020 12:59 pm

Other thread maxed out.

Although spoilers are fine please use some discretion when discussing details of recent shows/movies. Use spoiler tags if necessary

Feel like I haven't heard any buzz around Avenue 5 on HBO but just bindged the season and thought it was pretty funny. Great cast.

I watched Goodfellas for the first time from beginning-to-end on Sunday night. It's on Netflix. I'd watched huge chunks of it before, including probably the entire last hour of it, so it wasn't entirely new to me. But it was so funny to see so many minor characters who went on to have bigger roles in the future - especially those folks who ended up in The Sopranos. My favorite random moment was when I realized that Stacks was played by Samuel L. Jackson.

Great movie, for sure, though I still think The Godfather Parts I and II are the greatest mob movies of all time (and arguably the greatest movies, period).

Doing a Fringe rewatch. I wish I could go back in time and stan John Noble's performance as Walter Bishop.

Well, with all sports basically being shut down right now, it'll be a good time to catch up on my tv watching.

It's surreal. Usually the day after MLB allstar game is the one dead day. Now it's every day. I've just started Hunter on Amazon. Good first ep.

I see the Oriental Theater is limiting ticket sales to 1/3 capacity. Are they going OT make people sit every third seat? So far Marcus theaters are open.

The Silverlight Cinema place in Brookfield sent out an email saying every third seat would be empty so you could buy tickets as a couple and sit with someone but would be guaranteed an empty seat next to you. I'd imagine that becomes popular.

I sit next to my GF of course but I hate sitting next to anyone else in a theater, even with recliners that most have. It used to be a lot worse with regular seats but even now too many eat and drink like pigs, disrupting the movie for me. It was packed in more with the old seats but there weren't really eating options. Popcorn and candy. Now I have to sit next to a guy slobbering all over a triple bacon cheeseburger and nachos.

Well since there are no sports at the moment, here are some bingeable TV series' you can stream (not in order of preference, just off the top of my head):

- The Wire (HBO, Amazon Prime)
- Band of Brothers (HBO, Amazon Prime)
- Breaking Bad (Hulu)
- Fargo (Hulu)
- Lost (Hulu)
- Black Mirror (Netflix)
- Treme' (HBO, Amazon Prime)
- Bosch (Amazon)
- The Good Place (Netflix, Hulu)
- What We Do in the Shadows (Hulu)
- Letterkenny (Hulu)
- Luther (Amazon Prime)
- Sherlock (Netflix)

I know there are dozens upon dozens of others. Consider this a jumping off point. Suggestions?

"Terriers" is now on Hulu. Only had 12ish episodes but ended wrapping up with a resolution that made sense if the series didn't get renewed. I consider it the grown-up, less soapy version of "Veronica Mars." Terrific dialog, put together by the same guys that did "The Shield," and a great star turn by Donal Logue. Everyone who watched it loved it, problem being nobody watched it.

My plans:

TV shows:
Finish The New Pope (HBO)
Finish Bojack Horseman (Netflix)
Catch up on Curb (HBO)

Movies:
There Will Be Blood (Netflix)
Raging Bull (Netflix)

Then it's wide open. I might decide to catch up on Stranger Things (haven't see anything since Season 1), and I've heard The Outsider is good. Maybe Succession?

Love The Shield but it's not streaming anywhere that I know of without paying separately for it.

Succession is good...just keep at it. The first five episodes or so are kind of slow.
Peaky Blinders is another good choice as is Ozark.

The Shield is one of the best shows ever and is usually criminally forgotten when these "best" lists get put together, like is kind of going on now. It was also one of the originals to kick of the golden age of TV with things like Sopranos, Oz, 24, Wire, etc. Unfortunately right that its hard to stream, I'm not aware of how. I tell my friends to watch and there isn't a way. IDK, maybe with FX coming to Hulu now it will be on there?

I'm sure others will list of many I agree with, there is just so many you almost can't go wrong. I've just finished a couple and think my first one up with this down time is Outsider on HBO. But wanted to add the new Curb season is still going very strong. Hasn't missed a beat imo and the most recent episodes was one of my all time favorites.
Resident Lillard truther since 2015.
