Not good news at all.

First Corona death in the US happened today.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/1st-coronavirus-death-u-s-officials-say-n1145931

Health officials in Washington state said on Saturday a coronavirus patient has died, marking the first death in the U.S. from COVID-19, the illness associated with the virus.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it's responding to "the first possible outbreak" of the respiratory illness in a long-term care center in Washington. The death was not associated with that facility.

Health officials in Washington said 27 patients and 25 staff members at the center have symptoms associated with COVID-19.

The person who died was a man in his 50s with underlying health conditions, and there was no evidence he contracted the virus through travel, health officials said. They suspect domestic "community spread" of the disease, a new phase for the United States that began this week on the West Coast.

My wife's hospital just got approval to test for coronavirus. They are going to start testing in addition to flu and RSV for patients showing symptoms of respiratory illnesses. We should learn a lot more soon about both the extent to which this novel coronavirus is spreading within the US, as well as the health outcomes of patients who contract it. Right now we're flying blind, so this sort of data will be a huge benefit to medical science and public health efforts.

As the Boston Celtics take on the Utah Jazz on Friday night at the TD Garden, the stadium is taking precautions to ensure thousands of fans aren’t at risk of the spread of coronavirus.

Hand sanitizing dispensers have been installed at the entrance of every section of the stadium and officials have placed signs promoting good hygiene around the venue.

The Garden is also expecting to wipe down and disinfect areas more often as the night progresses.

I'm 60 years old and have asthma. I'm not going to any avoidable events until this seems to be over.

Not me. At my age something is going to kill me, whether it's the coronavirus or something else. What's the point of living to a ripe old age if your quality of life sucks? If I want to go to an event, I will.

Having said that, I'm going to work extra hard at maintaining my health. I'll be sure to get my regular flu and peneumonia shots.

What's curious about this virus is that very few kids under 10 seem to get it. When the "Spanish Flu" ravaged the planet in 1918, many of the victims were infants.

I wonder what the O/U is for a date when the NBA is forced to cancel its first game. I say March 29. This is definitely going to be a lot worse than people are prepared for in terms of canceled events and such.

What is the protocol if an NBA player is found to have it and he spreads it to his teammates? CDC says he can't work for two weeks and now his coworkers can't. I don't imagine a high profile, public-facing organization like the NBA is going to be OK with letting players 'play through it'.

Imagine one of these old **** that is running for president gets it. Biden is 77, Trump is 73 and eats cheeseburgers for breakfast. Would have massive, massive implications if either one were to get it between now and November, perhaps even worse between November and January.

It seems like corona is bound to spread simply on the basis of "voluntary quarantine?" Both in Italy and in Germany it just didn't work, and they're ahead of us in doing a lot of testing. In fact testing here is way behind where it should be... some medical experts believe the 600 positive cases is more like 5000. And how can vol quarantine work at all with the poor and working class??

Also an absurd tid bit smokers aren't getting it.
We have to much gunk in our lungs for it to attach to. I still lean that this is a conspiracy to stop all the Hong Kong protests and it went horrible

Nah, no conspiracy. It's a nasty mutation of the common cold, that's all. Viruses do that.

Were they protesting in the Hubei? All those protestors eating bat soup and gorilla meat, 700 miles from where the protests were, making 15% the income of the average Hong Kong resident.

Our protests have already been severely hampered by rampant arrests

I mean, the Chinese government could have intended a small scale trial run.

Do not be surprised if there are NO NBA 2020 playoffs - none - zero - cancelled.
The annual 10K-12K people meeting of MY Endocrine Society in SF in late March was cancelled 3 hours ago (for the third time in 104 years - previously in 1943 & 1945 b/o a little thing called WW2).
The annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology in Chicago at the same time was also just cancelled. Schools are closing in many cities & in Italy the entire country has been grounded & all sporting events have been cancelled. A whole lot of people attend basketball games in close proximity.

I hope you guys are taking this more seriously than most people I've spoke to (online and in-person). This is not just the flu. The dangers are not as much with the immediate illness, but in the effects of having an extremely large population needing treatment at one time. God forbid one of your parents or grandparents need access to oxygen and are deprioritized due to a massive influx of patients that hospitals can't manage. All of a sudden something not typically seen as significant could turn life-threatening. Italy is already seeing this, and they're basically us 2 weeks in the future. They had ~500 cases 12 days ago and are now up to ~9200.

I was really happy to hear Gorman speak so honestly and bluntly about it this morning. At this rate it's basically a guarantee that fan attendance from all major sports is gone in 7-10 days and, as ex said above, I wouldn't be surprised to see the playoffs cancelled.

People in the US (especially some politicians) want to keep pushing this off and pretending like it won't affect them and they're in for a rude awakening in the next 2 weeks.

So when is China going to be held accountable for this?

The NBA should start squaring off sections in the stands. As a start, instead of completely playing infront of empty arenas.

General, friendly pre-warning: Let's lay off the China bashing / stereotyping / wild speculating.
Don't want to hand out warnings or lock this thread, but if things head down that road, it'll happen.
