It doesn't matter your political persuasion, this is downright inexcusable and overwhelmingly negligent.

Sorry, but how can this be true when we know at least two basketball teams were tested within the last 24 hours?

OKC wasn't tested. I'm not sure about all of the Jazz

This was health secretary Azar's response to a question about accessibility and affordability of a potential covid19 vaccine/medication:

Here is Azar's astounding statement regarding the development of a coronavirus vaccine: "Frankly, this has such global attention right now and the private market players, major pharmaceutical players as you've heard, are engaged in this, that we think that this is not like our normal kind of bioterrorism procurement processes, where the government might be the unique purchaser, say, of a smallpox therapy. The market here, we believe, will actually sort that out in terms of demand, purchasing, stocking, etc. But we'll work on that to make sure that we're able to accelerate vaccine as well as therapeutic research and development."

https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/05/opinions/ludicrous-plan-coronavirus-vaccine-opinion-sachs/index.html

“We would want to ensure that we work to make it affordable, but we can’t control that price because we need the private sector to invest. . . . Price controls won’t get us there.”

https://www.forbes.com/sites/isabeltogoh/2020/02/27/health-secretary-alex-azar-refuses-to-guarantee-coronavirus-vaccine-would-be-affordable-for-all/#5a27a806490c

And you wonder why the CDC only completed 8 tests yesterday....

Essentially saying that their main concern is not about saving lives, its whether the pharma corporations will profit from a potential vaccine...this is what happens when you allow corporations to dictate policy. Azar is a former pharma corporation exec and lobbyist.

BTW, the US government is/will be investing billions in helping to come up with a vaccine while allowing those pharma corporations to benefit from that invested public money to price gouge the public.

Is the outrage because the CDC did not conduct tests, but other sources conducted tests?
They have a chart online and you can see for yourself. You can see clearly see 8 for yesterday. That was yesterday before they tested the Jazz players.

Looks like individual states are doing their own testing but it has been rather low either way as compared to other parts of the world. The CDC has operations thru out the country, to only do 8 themselves is dumbfounding.

That does appear very strange. I also did not know until I checked that the CDC is an agency within the Executive Branch.

lol wtf? Slovenia, country of 2 million peoples, already tested 4000 people, what is USA doing?

Also literally nobody but pharmaceut industry can profit from it, and huge amount of companies can go under really, really fast, especially ones who thrive off supermakets/moles and make most of the profit off low price and quantitative selling approach.

At the moment, most hospitals have to send their tests to the CDC or their local department of health to run the test. The tests are taking 2-3 days to return a result. If a layperson were to go to the emergency department, this is the test that they might get. And for most hospitals, if you simply have cold-like symptoms, without any direct contact with known COVID19 positive person or travel to a high risk area, you aren't getting tested because they are still scarce (this is a travesty because many of these patients could very well have COVID19, but are not sick enough to require inpatient hospitalization; identifying the the positive cases is key in curbing spread of the disease).

The Jazz were likely given one of the rapid tests that returns results within hours. These are being produced by private companies. The hope is that most of these rapid tests will be distributed to most hospitals by early next week.

How long before everything shuts down? Groceries/gas stations/offices? Serious question.

Many offices (mine included) already have “shut down” and moved to remote work.

I work for a large nationwide distributor. Hiring has been frozen and overtime has been banned. This is a company that is very stable. But I'm sure other not as stable companies are starting to or will be letting people go and that means those people and their families may lose their employer provided healthcare. This is why we need a single payer healthcare.

Maybe the only good thing that will come out of this is for people to realize how bastardized our current healthcare system has become from corporate greed, and an on the take Senate. We might just get single payer pushed through as a result.

I sort of hope we get so angry over our government response, that we douche all current branches, add reasonable term limits to the Senate, and tie their healthcare to the Teachers of the district they represent.

All of this has an “end of times” feel to it. Every time I pull up ESPN, something else is canceled. I hope and pray everyone makes it through with good health but I’m not gonna lie, this sucks. We’re losing the best time of the year for sports IMHO.

Pretty shocking that when looking at the front lines of this virus that the bottom line being discussed is financial viability and profitability for big pharma, per what Optimus shared. I'll have to read up on that more. But if trillions of dollars can be spent to bail out reckless decisions when it comes to financial mismanagement, but perhaps not for the sick who need a vaccine.

It will be interesting to see how this all unfolds. If large global stoppages become a thing and economies really suffer it's going to open up a chance for big changes. It's already making a case against globalisation and for more localised supply chains since when a global linchpin like China goes down like it has, it causes huge economic trouble for everyone. If more companies have to take extended breaks and staff aren't covered by sick leave and insurance then something like a UBI becomes a talking point again. And if a vaccine ends up priced out of the range of affordability for too many people then it's just going to really fire people up.
