Re: New NFL Playoff Structure - 7 teams each conference starting next season
wow, the vote was really close. not terribly surprised it passed considering the big pay raise for the lower earning players (who make up a majority)
there are some good things, more money for players, reduced preseason, reduced padded practices (unless a lack of preparedness results in more injuries)
i could have gone either way on more playoff teams. the one seed already makes it to the super bowl pretty frequently and now its tiled even more in that direction. but if you want the best to play the best then that is how you do it
i also don't like the 17 game season. 16 was perfect

You really think we need to play another game?

No. But having less preseason games is an automatic win in my book.
If they went with 18 games & only 2 preseason. I'd also be in favor.

I wonder if season ticket holders will be charged more. They already pay for preseason games.
Certainly the tickets for a regular season game sold on the secondary market will fetch more than a preseason game.

Again, two weeks isn't enough time to really see what you have before you start making cuts.

I would expand the rosters to 70 if I had my way. 2 preseason games would be fine. They settled on 3. Which seems to be the magic number.

Why not strike. Corona virus might cancel games anyway

I don't disagree with your point your making. If they do add regular season games, which I hope they don't, I'd rather see 18 games vs. 17. I just remember Tom Landry back in the 70's when there were 6 preseason games, that he needed more time to see and evaluate players before coming up with a final roster.

Owners will try to force ahead an NFL season even if people are dying by the fall.
My guess is TV money isn't paid unless there are games? They did have a provision where a strike would still require the networks to pay the league. Not sure about bans related to public health.
NBA talks about playing in empty stadiums, in some isolated location. But each NBA game would still require at least dozens if not hundreds of support staff, both to and from the games, at the venue, in and outside the locker rooms.
I would think NFL games would require even more support people, even if no fans were allowed to watch. Maybe they could only allow 1/3 of fans to attend games. Even then, you're talking about 20k people in a game. They might be seated 10 feet from each other in the stands. However, they would all have to go through choke points to enter and exit the stadiums.

Yeah, the ripple effect is so significant here, and the weight pushing a lot of big organizations right now can really be felt. The company I work for is huge, but has lost several billion in value in a couple of months. Not only that, but you can feel the pressure from clients in management, and so I know the execs are putting the same pressure on our vendors. And the valve opens so slowly, as everything has to be checked and hedged in a somewhat new way, that it's agonizing. Public and private organizations alike have been caught flatfooted, even when in some cases there was about 3 months' warning.
My personal perspective is that the companies that are the first dominoes to fall in favour of giving leniency to their clients can really cash in on big PR value, when inevitably everyone is going to have to make accommodations for others, both personally and professionally. To its credit, the NBA came down firmly and set a great example even with a bit of a false start. This immediately put pressure on the TV companies affected to decide whether the NBA stopping the manufacture of new product constitutes a breach of their agreement.
The TV deals will probably contain some form of force majeure clause, but that won't tell us much because the specifics were likely bargained in detail by organizations this big. The NBA says they cannot supply their client with a product, because of unforeseen circumstances. By ending the season quickly, they took what will likely prove effective action but in doing so completely deleted their product(s), which I'm sure was discussed at length with legal first, because they believe they have been compelled to stop business. I see a lot of classic games on TV now, so maybe there's an opportunity to provide something in lieu of live entertainment that satisfies some conditions or facilitates a compromise through mediation. By moving quickly, the NBA put the pressure on the TV companies to risk suing them for damages and destroying their reputation or support them and try to move forward with some sort of compromise.
In the case of the company I work for, some clients stopped paying their bills, believing this to be significant enough a circumstance to be able to defend themselves. At first we were given clear instructions to push back, and today that language started changing, but I could feel the change coming for a week. If they sit on the pressure for too long, it will break them, but some will wait because they are scared or indecisive or hoping it is not as serious as has been predicted (and is observed in some places). If things calm down, they might get away with some savings and a head start on those that eventually gave in but too late to cash in on the PR; but if they get more intense, they risk losing their whole business. This is why risk analysts are doing crazy business right now. Them and Purell.

17 games would mean uneven number of home and away games (unless everyone does have to do an international game which would be interesting)
Exactly, it's perfect how it is already. Season kicks off 1st week in September and finishes in the last week of December and the last week of the year, right before the new year kicks off. Then playoffs in January, Super Bowl in Feb. It ain't broke, don't mess wit it.

That just means we will have to wait an extra week to watch the Baltimore Ravens choke away another opportunity.

Playoffs will be really interesting next year (if it happens). Cleveland should finally make it as a 7th seed
