Semi-OT: Coronavirus (COVID-19) Discussion Thread III (Info. Post 1)

Post#1 » by Dirk » Tue Mar 17, 2020 2:27 pm

Please, read this
--- NO discussion whether it was or wasn't called a hoax

--- NO discussion about whether it should or should not be called Chinese virus. You will not be allowed to use "Chinese virus" in this topic though (it derails topics and unless you're an idiot looking to do it on purpose you will refrain from baiting other users.)

See here, CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nCoV/index.html
See here, White House https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/03.16.20_coronavirus-guidance_8.5x11_315PM.pdf

--- DON'T feed idiotic posts. I.e, "this is just a fabrication by the media". If you reply to that, mocking it, you are more to blame than the idiot. Just because someone writes something dumb. You don't get a free pass to mock and bait back. Those who have to read some of the resulting exchanges can feel their brain cells dying.

If you use the idiotic posts as an opportunity to enlighten them and the few that still think the same way, then that's welcomed. But generally --- ignore the dumb posts please.

--- DON'T use this topic to vent about internal politics. Don't re-hash the same debates that you have had over the last few years. If it isn't fresh and relevant to the current situation, just don't post.

If you need to vent, find some other avenue.

--- The dumb mano-a-mano battles over futile things have no place in this topic.

This has happened and will happen more often:
--- Suspensions
--- Entire non productive and derailing discussions moved out to sanitize the topic

Spoiler:
This thread is aimed at having an elevated discussion.

You can disagree. You can be sceptical. But please, make sure that you bring some substance so that the discussion can be productive. We should all be on the same side here. And particularly, we should appreciate how many users we have from all parts of the US and the world and have quick access to different experiences.

While a joke here and there shouldn't be a problem, please be mindful that topics such as these can quickly spiral out of control. So leave the jokes for other topics. Try to take this topic serious enough and respect everyone else, particularly those who clearly are taking the time to share good information.

- posting useful info and updates is greatly appreciated

- if you post data, please link to the source. Don't post unverified data.

- no talk about internal politics that are off topic, posts must be related to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak

- no cheap attacks on groups of users or people, no baiting, no derailing

- no conspiracy theories

- Users who just make low effort posts and bait others will be suspended

- Users who continuously derail discussion will be suspended

- Users who post fake data will be suspended

- Use the report button

- Do not quote and reply to obvious bad posts, that just derails a topic and brings the level down

Good virus bookmark: Day-to-day tracking of new cases in the USA via a graph (See 2nd graph down). Updates daily:

We are now entering the third phase of the coronavirus discussion.

Any derailments of the topic will be contained and you will be put in isolation.

Don't make us lockdown this thread.

Some context on this.

University of Washington says in tests it is doing (about 2000 per day in the state), they are getting like a 6.5% positive rate. And Dr Birx has said that the private companies doing testing (LabCorp, Quest) are getting like a 1-2% positive rate.

Still, happy to hear the Cleveland Clinic CEO feels confident.

They are, and I'm glad you said this because it's important that people here not from the USA realize it.

Cleveland Clinic is one of the premiere USA hospital locations/chains. That doesn't mean the CEO is 'correct' on what they are saying (never know how things will turn with the virus), but hearing this from them is a very reassuring thing coming from a heavy-hitter source.

Its shameful that the bill for emergency sick leave was made to exclude business of 500 employees or more. Just shameful. Making it clear who's side they are on.

I believe new numbers from Italy should be coming soon?

There were small declines in both new cases and deaths yesterday, but there were before on other days too. We probably need to see 3-4 days of good numbers before we can really identify it as a trend.

Trump said yesterday in the task force press conference that this could get cleaned up in the final draft of the bill.

And I agree, it should get fixed.

I think the reporting on Saturdays and Sundays is skewed in Italy. I think some of the Sunday deaths actually happen on the Saturday but don't get counted. Happened the week before as well.

State of testing.

USA has done (on record) 49,423 tests
https://covidtracking.com/data/

Positive -----------> 4380
Negative ----------> 43,072
Pending -----------> 1969

South Korea (world test leader? Guess is that it's either them or China) now at about 287,000 tests:

Your daily number is not useful, should use a 5 day rolling average. Doctors are good in their specific fields, but they suck at statistics.

Roche has shipped out 400,000 test samples yesterday, plans to do 400,000 minimum per week. Your SK #'s going to get crushed soon.

Italy has a press conference in 2 hours.

Spain released their update earlier today.

They have been on a worse trajectory than Italy. This graphic is updated with their numbers from today

Day 15 since hitting 100 positive cases (they're a week behind Italy)

17.7% increase from yesterday.
