49ers re-signed DE Ronald Blair to a one-year contract.
Recovering from a torn ACL, Blair just resumed running two days ago. A situational pass rusher, 27-year-old Blair notched three sacks in nine games before going down last season. Blair figures to be limited for the start of training camp, but he has a shot to be ready for Week 1.

Breida just got a 2nd round tender so he'll be back.

Gotta admit this seems a bit surprising. A second-round tender? That costs over $3M/year, which seems like a lot for a RB that was behind Wilson on the depth chart for the Super Bowl on a team that is pushing up against the cap. If you are already committed to Wilson, McKinnon and Mostert, I would have thought there would be cheaper options for a RB at the bottom of the depth chart.

I would have preferred to cut ties with breida and Coleman, then maybe pick up an undrafted rookie or use a late pick. Not worth the money, but I guess kyle has seen rbs drop like flies before

I was somewhat surprised with the second-year tender for Breida, and I'm one of Breida's biggest fans. He was our third or fourth RB by the end of last year, and we're apparently bringing McKinnon back. If this means we get rid of Coleman, I'm fine with it, but we continue to sink money into the RB position even though we crushed it this past season with two UDFAs and a street FA (granted one we overpaid).

As for McKinnon, obviously it depends an awful lot on what the restructure looks like, but I'm fine with it in theory. McKinnon brings an element as a receiver that we just haven't had for the past couple years, and it's obvious Kyle wants that. Last year, Coleman led the RBs with 21 receptions, and the halfback position (Juszczyk had 20) combined for 57 receptions. Ezekiel Elliott alone had 54, and he was 9th in receptions at the position. If we can trot out McKinnon, who can run at least a partial route tree, with guys like Samuel and Hurd who can run the ball effectively, it will place a ton of pressure on opposing Ds.

Yes, this comes to a 2020 salary of $910,000, which is the league minimum for vets with 4-6 years experience under the new CBA. Add in the $4M of dead money we incur by scrapping his old contract, that comes to $4.91M against the cap. But we save the $8.55M cap hit we would have had under his old contract so the net savings by restructuring McKinnon's contract comes to $3.64M. And McKinnon's cap hit of $9.2M for 2021 also comes off the Niners' books.

And of course, we still have that guy named Kittle sitting out there that we need to address, which is why the Niners are looking to save every dollar against the 2020 cap that they can.

I would love to have Sanders back and focus on either the OL or DL with one of our first round picks (assuming we trade down with the other). But given that we still have to address the new deal with Kittle, I don't think we will have enough $$ to pay Sanders what other teams will be willing to pay.

Matt Maiocco is reporting that we just signed NY Jets guard Tom Compton. Sounds like the position will not just be handed to Brunskill, which is fine since competition brings out the best in a player.

I am sure they tried, would be dumb not to.

So Brunskill will make $675K this season and the Niners are going to pay $3M to Compton? Compton has been mediocre, and often injured, throughout his career - his PFF grade last year was a thoroughly underwhelming 49.7. By way of comparison, the recently cut Person was 61.8 and Brunskill was 73.0 (which, by the way, just edges out Staley as the highest grade for any Niner OL). I realize this is the NFL and not real-life, but if Brunskill earns the starting job, do we really need to pay his back-up more than 3 times as much as the starter? I know Compton was a back-up on the 2016 Falcons that went to the Super Bowl so Shanahan obviously knows who Compton is, but this seems like a bit of a head-scratcher to me.
