Trump is pushing the "Chinese virus", because he is trying to get the American people to remember that it originated from China. The idea is to get us to think "hey, China started this, so whatever is going on here is not our fault. We were doing great before the Chinese ruined everything". Which is dumb.

Whatever happened happened. It's not like holding China responsible is going to get them to fix this pandemic for us.

Come election time, citizens will remember how our leaders handle pandemics. And they aren't going to give a free-pass because it was a Chinese Virus and not an American Virus.

Chaos can happen at anytime from anywhere. How it's deal with it is what matters.

The swing voters will mostly understand what he is doing and even some of his supporters. That he's doing it for the reasons you state is obvious and with this approach comes the collateral damage of his most ignorant followers possibly harming Chinese-Americans. It happened after 9/11. Dummies attacked anyone who was brown that didn't look African, a variant on Paki bashing in the UK.

Trump's handlers are trying to rework the narrative into Trump having a handle on the crisis after pooh poohing the oncoming threat just weeks ago. Trump is praying there is some return to normalcy by this Summer so he can go into the election saying he handled this well even if we know he did not.

Right now, the U.S. has zero unified containment strategy. June will be here in 10 weeks. I think the growth curve could grow most of that time between now and then. Trump is praying the Summer.heat will slow it down and start to flatten the curve for him.

Trump only learned to read and write in 2015 because his advisors told him presidential candidates need those skills.

People will get comfortable again in August, and go out more, and boom... We are at square 1 again

This social distancing isn't a solution. We need to see progress in masks and hospital rooms

Yeah, I think you're right. Our country is not unified into cooperative units. In a leadership void, compliance is highly arbitrary. We are factional as a culture.

It only takes 5% saying STFU to derail the efforts of 95%. That's an arbitrary number though. Right now, more than 5% of the country is still behaving like this is a highly personal inconvenience. Govt could have shut down beaches and sent the Spring breakers home, but nah.

We're still front-loading the infected rate as we speak, so instead of peaking and declining, I think we could see sustained numbers of daily confirmed infections for a while as those people continue to infect others. IOW, we may plateau on the top of the scale for a while, not drop off.

Add in the rush back into complacency as you're so correctly predicting and we'll see waves for a while. At a certain point, some herd immunity may develop before a vaccine is rolled out, but that's hard to predict.

Yeah, Trump is a criminal

Personally, I think he has been playing the markets for a long time before this crisis. IOW, there may be a direct line to market traders who know what comments and tweets are coming out. Every time Trump spoke recently, the markets tanked. I think the rest of Wall Street got tired of being out-shorted by whomever has the inside track to the WH and just decided to bail too every time this guy did something. Yes, the situation would tank the market anyway, but I think the reaction shows some other layer of distrust within the market makers themselves.

I think he did this with the trade wars with China too. I can't prove it, but every hunch I've ever had about Trump has come true like my way ahead of the curve prediction the NRA's existence would come into question after the Russian money they channeled to McConnell was exposed. It was and it is yet another one of dozens of these scandals still playing out in the background that will see the strong light of day when the Dems take back control.

I don't think Trump coordinates every move or comment like this, but some I expect are well calculated to cause market spikes up or down to profit from.

The one difference now is this is a real crisis, not one he can manufacture and self-delude himself into thinking he controls the narrative. The narrative is largely running away from him and that actually triggers even more his tendency to lie and make up anything if he thinks it makes him look better. He's going to keep lying.
