Semi-OT: Coronavirus (COVID-19) Discussion Thread IV (Must read Post 1)

New Jersey's numbers are terrifying.

1240 tests, 890 positive, wtf

The high % of infections from the tested people is to be expected, since you basically have to pre qualify with a bunch of symptoms and likely exposure to even get a test. The problem is trying to understand how long they've had the virus and where the spread came from, which is impossible when you start testing so late in the game and have near zero opportunity to do any tracing. It makes it that much tougher to track down other possible infections to start quarantining them as well.

The horses are WAAAY out of the barn, so to speak.

Yeah, the big problem is what all these people have been doing the past 2 weeks, and how many each may have passed it on too.

But anyway based on what is happening in Italy, mots of the deaths there are with people who are already sick, unhealthy or smokers??? That's what I got from what some are posting. If so, after all this is over, would that change the mindset of Italian people to get healthier and stop smoking? Or naaaah YOLO?

Also I do not know what will happen in the USA in the coming days, BUT once this is also over ( or worse has passed by ) will that change the mindset like getting healthier, stopping the megasize soda, etc etc

The only positive for the states is that the biggest outbreak zones are generally the healthier & younger parts of the country for now.

Honestly seems like a waste of tests.... need to catch more mild and asymptomatic cases - they are clearly just testing symptomatic people.

Americans are arguably less healthy than italians (although we are younger). Tons of obesity and diabetes

Test everybody.

Test for antibodies as well to know how much it has already spread.

I've heard Monday Everlywell will have 30k at home tests for 135. Not sure about an antibody test.

Rich and middle-income East Asian countries like Taiwan, Vietnam, and Singapore have managed to nearly halt the outbreak in its tracks, while more ramshackle countries like the U.S. and U.K. have botched it almost beyond belief...

Taiwan has a Medicare-style single-payer system (indeed, it was actually based initially on America's Medicare system, except made universal), which allowed them to deploy testing, treatment, and quarantine without any fuss. They also had pandemic response plans drawn up after the SARS outbreak in 2002, which had been regularly reviewed and practiced. Finally, their citizens had been educated and prepared to take any epidemic seriously, so that people did not try to escape lockdowns and spread the disease further.

Even middle-income countries can manage this. Vietnam, whose per-capita GDP was only about $6,600 in 2018 (or about 12 percent as much as the U.S.), squelched its initial epidemic with a lightning-fast deployment of mass testing, contact-tracking, quarantine, and public education measures (though it has since been dealing with new infections from foreign travelers). If the state is on top of the situation, mass lockdowns and the associated economic devastation can be limited or avoided.

You guys probably mostly had the actual flu. This thing is much more contagious than the normal flu... we probably would have seen deaths spiking and outbreaks earlier if you all had it (granted some of that could be hidden in flue data... but I think it's pretty unlikely that a bunch of people had it)

People all over the internet are speculating that they had it in January. It is too infectious and there are way too many serious cases when people actually get it for that to be true.

I kind of feel like everyone will be like Italy, it'll just take a little longer. I saw like 50 cases on the island of Dominican Republic/Haiti. I bet with 21 million people, that'll eventually be as bad.

It was obvious he was lying. His son had said he had it but then shortly started saying no, my guess to not scare people, he then went on to an event and hugged a ton of people and even grabbed their cells to take selfies.

Let's see how those people are feeling after several days, a full week, maybe up to 2 full weeks? If chorloquine kills the virus quicker than we'll have proof on chorloquine.

The drug has been around nearly 100 years, they know what the side effects are, a lot of people are saying Hydroxychloroquine is better and has less side effects.
