I don't see how we are going to avoid being another Italy. Pretty much hoping for a miracle at this point

I don’t understand what Ohio’s governor is doing. At the start of this pandemic I’d say he did a phenomenal job getting out in front of this and being aggressive.

However, NOW he’s doing nothing. I don’t understand it. He’s acting like Florida’s governor.

I was reading about Russia this morning...they proactively shut down the borders on Jan 30th. They only have like 150 cases I think...

Yeah, about those 150...

I'm going through the virus task force press conference from today. The key thing I saw/heard was Admiral Giroir (testing czar) stating that over 195,000 tests have been done so far in the USA, not including test information from a number of hospitals and private labs who have not had to report their test data.

Giroir said (showed in a graph) that over 50,000 tests were done yesterday. He also said that number will continue to rise significantly going forward (tests per day figure).

He also said that the entities (hospitals, etc) that have not been reporting testing data will begin to do so this week.

Finally, he stressed that the 195,000 figure is tests received and analyzed. Meaning, there may be more than 195,000 test kits having been used so far, but not all of those tests have been analyzed yet (this is the real gating item, it seems, rather than a shortage of kits).

POTUS said that Hanes corporation will begin to make masks by retro-fitting their industrial production units.

Horrifying. I live in Atlanta, and I pulled the plug on a vacation out to see my sister/nieces in Portland leaving on Wednesday. I don’t even like going to the grocery store for 20 minutes. Otherwise I’m not leaving my apartment unless it was on fire, and I’d still think twice. I can’t even comprehend what any of these people are thinking. The mayor needs to shut this sh*t down.

Honestly the more I read about China and especially South Korea, the more primitive the North American response seems.

Well, China also forcibly locked people in their own homes. I think look at the entirety of the Chinese government’s response would show so fairly primitive methods in the mix.

You can separate the means of detection from the means of enforcement. The former is impressive, regardless of the latter.

Also, 9/11 taught us that in desperate times, it's acceptable to trade off certain freedoms for the protection of the masses (or it should have; refer to airport security changes) . Policing a lockdown is similar - it's useless for States to enact one without the means of enforcement.

For example, things have become so desperate in Italy that the military has been called in to help enforce the lockdown.

States, entire countries, need to do what they can if people are just so stupid and/or ignorant that they endanger the masses.

The one hope I have is that we’re going to be able to make up a little bit of ground through sheer industrial / scientific might. Then I see pictures of those idiots at the airport and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to matter.

Here in Canada, we have had 13 deaths so far, 8 have been tied to Lynn Valley Care Centre, North Vancouver.

What's interesting to me is that there doesn't seem to be much of a correlation between incidence and testing absence of extreme social isolation measures. Canada has been one of the top countries re testing per capita but has the same 33% per day growth rate as virtually everyone else. The only places that have avoided those increases (i.e. China post lockdown, Japan, Vietnam, etc.) are all practicing social isolation/distancing, and are also wearing masks.

Edit: I suspect growth rates will taper off in most countries once the public gets better at things like not touching their face, regimented cleaning, social distancing, etc. Western nations just aren't accustomed to that yet.

There's some talk that Japan is lying to keep the Olympics, but Taiwan isn't a member of WHO so they operate on their own. They also rely on masks, they hand out 3 per person every week in addition to testing. They're now sending the US 100,000 per week as well. There is no social stigma with wearing a mask in Taiwan, everyone does it in public.

Our Doctors & Nurses need the masks now, but after the first wave we need to adopt wearing masks, especially after the doctors & nurses can recover and go back to work presumably immune.

If you've been to Japan, you'll know why. There's a good reason their birth numbers are so low.
