Re: OT: The official Coronavirus fear mongering thread
There is plenty of validity to that logic. But as the last couple of weeks have shown, there is also one irreconcilable flaw. When a pandemic strikes, the health of the collective suddenly becomes our focus. And yet, it takes more than abstract externalities to alter the inertia of a system, and ours remains one where wealth and prestige trump any objective measure of necessity. All this talk of flattening the curve is great. But it will be wasted without sensible action.

Yes there is fear.
Yes there is isolation.
Yes there is panic buying.
Yes there is sickness.
Yes there is even death.
But,
They say that in Wuhan after so many years of noise
You can hear the birds again.
They say that after just a few weeks of quiet
The sky is no longer thick with fumes
But blue and grey and clear.
They say that in the streets of Assisi
People are singing to each other
across the empty squares,
keeping their windows open
so that those who are alone
may hear the sounds of family around them.
They say that a hotel in the West of Ireland
Is offering free meals and delivery to the housebound.
Today a young woman I know
is busy spreading fliers with her number
through the neighbourhood
So that the elders may have someone to call on.
Today Churches, Synagogues, Mosques and Temples
are preparing to welcome
and shelter the homeless, the sick, the weary
All over the world people are slowing down and reflecting
All over the world people are looking at their neighbours in a new way
All over the world people are waking up to a new reality
To how big we really are.
To how little control we really have.
To what really matters.
To Love.
So we pray and we remember that
Yes there is fear.
But there does not have to be hate.
Yes there is isolation.
But there does not have to be loneliness.
Yes there is panic buying.
But there does not have to be meanness.
Yes there is sickness.
But there does not have to be disease of the soul
Yes there is even death.
But there can always be a rebirth of love.
Wake to the choices you make as to how to live now.
Today, breathe.
Listen, behind the factory noises of your panic
The birds are singing again
The sky is clearing,
Spring is coming,
And we are always encompassed by Love.
Open the windows of your soul
And though you may not be able
to touch across the empty square,
Sing.
It’s kind of like a very roundabout and beautiful way of saying STFU and GTFO.

Feel good to have Gov. Cuomo running things in N.Y. Don't like politics but he's restored confidence in a huge way.

Bloomberg donated 40 millions.
Bill gates donated billions over the years in vaccine research.
Just to name a few.

Yes, Gates record is strong. Bloomberg has kept their word.
But it is a valid question why there are not more shows of financial support from the deep pockets out there. I'm sure there are sizeable charitable donations we don't know about, but still there should be signs of more activity.

Bernie Sanders just raised 2 million for people effected by coronavirus, Joe Biden can’t get the VCR to work, and Trump is having a trailer trash Macbeth Moment.

This isn't partisan, they are all **** fools.
People were out dining at 8pm in massive groups as little as two weeks ago in the city. Where was Cuomo then? He should have taken control out of clown ass DeBlasio's hands. This idiot was telling people to ignore it on March 11th.

I totally dont disagree with that. I just dont like the narrative that some how Jack ma is this great philanthropist. Overall, western billionaires are much more given than Asian billionaires.

Yeah, I get that. It was really just an example of someone contributing help, not something to bolster an East vs. West agenda.

Pardon me if I don't join you all in your praise of this guy.
Things change during an unpredictable global virus.
How many people did you tell "See you tomorrow" the day before you started social distancing and didn't see them as you assumed you would?? Things change.

Some people prefer to do their good deeds anonymously and don't always announce when they make donations or raise money. Just sayin!

Gee, I wonder what all of these people who lose their jobs as a result of this virus are going to get healthcare? Unemployment is predicted to go up to 20% and all these people have their healthcare tied to their employment.

Marty's talking about Biden who is running for President. You're supposed to show leadership not working behind the scene. He needs to be out there so people can see him. Gates, Soros, and Bloomberg can afford to do it "behind the scenes."

I didn't read it as a "Biden" post since he also mentioned Trump.
But if that's what he meant, that's certainly one opinion. I guess it's a personal choice, but I was only saying not every good deed will always be made public -- especially if it's really about the deed and not the accolades.

Medical bankruptcies are going to climb, people will default on their mortgages, housing market will take a hit and we will end up bailing out banks or insurance companies (again).

If you live in South Florida on the East side and you need toilet paper or hand sanitizer I have been able to get both at the Swap Shop flea market in Fort Lauderdale. $25 for 24 roll packs TP have been with a couple of vendors and $30 for a half gallon hand sanitizer is supposed to be available tomorrow. Clorox is also there. They are on the outside section of the market. The indoor part of the market is supposed to be closed tomorrow and the outside section might be in a couple of days so you need to act quickly.
Also if you need rubbing alcohol there is a guy in Sunrise Blvd in Plantation selling 99% isopropyl gallon jugs for $40 two for $70. PM me for his number. He said he had 250 gallons left but is of course selling fast.

I’m not American but I’ve seen a lot of Cuomo on the news and he’s been handling this a lot better than the clown in the Whitehouse. He’s providing sober, direct facts and is informing the public. I’m sure that he has his short comings but from what I’ve seen he’s shown leadership on this.
