I disagree. A medical catastrophe can happen at any time. The health care system is under-resourced and thats the real problem.

Look at Japan, South Korea, Singapore.....those countries are doing ok. Whats the difference?

They took earlier containment measures. It's not because their healthcare system has so much more capacity to treat critically ill people than other countries.

In Italy they need army trucks to transport the bodies and crematoriums running around the clock are not able to cremate all the dead. You cannot argue that that sort of capacity should be the norm at all times, because that's just not tied to reality.

The situation in Italy is the result of a lack of initial reaction, suspect health care system and perhaps more of a carefree atitude of the population until things escalated.

When all is said and done, this virus will show us which governments and health care systems are prepared and those who are not.

I'm from Canada myself and the health care system here is free for all which is great but I still think its under-resourced and built around the idea of keeping the status quo which is not effective when something unexpected happens.

It also has to do with Italians being older in general and having a higher number of habitual smokers in their population.

I think this will change moving forward. I think you will see part of our defense budget going towards building up the reserves of these supplies. At least I hope that happens. We have a TON of waste in our defense budget.

This needs to be in the forefront, although states are doing good by offering testing free of charge, there is nothing that has been done to make sure that treatment for covid19 is covered. We have large portions of the country with weak health insurance, or no health insurance at all, and the one's that have insurance get it thru their employer, so if they get laid off or furloughed they are out of luck. The one's lucky enough to keep their jobs have to pray the execs are benevolent enough keep their healthcare coverage. What a terrible position for the country to be in.

I don’t want to scare you, but your sister should be extremely precautious.
****. I had childhood asthma, that went away by like 8 years old. Hope I'll be okay

I watched my father take his final breaths, via Skype, yesterday morning. If your sister is still being pressured to go to work despite the severity of current events, tell her it’s not worth it.

Wait what? Your dad was a doc who was working and caught this thing and passed away ? Did I get that right ?

So sorry man :(

Number of confirmed cases in US has risen dramatically as of Sunday, as expected with increase in testing. Mortality rate by end of day will likely be between 1% and 1.1% (assuming these numbers are accurate). Pretty close to what I anticipated. We still need another week of data given the progression we've seen (factoring in incubation period and R0). If the rate should drop to 0.5% by end of next week what is the plan? I would not use the estimated number of infections to make decisions as that is going to have a high variance. Hard to say what the final mortality rate will be, but I suspect between 0.5-1.0%. Again, I stress you need to protect the vulnerable.

The bigger question for the adults in the room is how do you handle China afterwards because even a teenager could tell they screwed up the response to this issue especially with regards to non-Chinese.

Although not surprising the Rand Paul diagnosis is devastating because senators have to be present to make any votes and we need votes on emergency bills immediately.

The concept of people being asymptomatic is quite scary. I feel fine but I guess I might have the virus and in my area they’re only testing people if you tell them you have symptoms

Probably the same way the US administration will be "handled" after over 2 months of denial and soothsaying finally turned to realization, and then slowly action.

Nothing will happen.

Its typical of these viruses. Large % will not even know they have it.

Votes cannot be made remotely, the congressperson has to be in person to make the vote so imagine if more of them are infected and have to isolate? We need emergency bills passed, this has the potential to be devastating in terms of timing to get our citizens help.

They doubled their death total in one day. That's odd.

It's possible they weren't testing the severely I'll before, if it's actually at 58 and they weren't testing before then they'll be 1000 deaths a day before the recent lockdown even attempts to curve the numbers with its 2 week delay.
