It's absolutely disgusting that politicians would try and push this stuff right now.
Yes it is.
I’ve got a close friend that works in the SF city superivisors office. They are politically left and have been absolutely shocked how “wrong” the progressive left is. I’ve heard stories from them about spending and how the money funnels to family foundations etc. Some of the Pelosi stories I’ve heard are disturbing. Meanwhile, my friend who genuinely believed in how politics can help the marginalized and less fortunate... has given up hope in the left and politics in general. Sad.
I live in SF, too. But I don't follow the meaning of your post. What do you mean by "money funnels to family foundations"? And what about Pelosi is so disturbing? You mention a couple of things that are very vague, and then say that this has caused your friend to give up hope in the left and politics in general? Doesn't make much sense.

But at least tell the whole story, you skipped over the part in which Republicans want to create a slush fund of 1/2 trillion to save companies, and Trump says "I'll oversee it", but refuses to say his hotels won't be receiving funds. So it's basically 500 billion for him and his friends.
Yeah, I would like to hear more details on some of these items before saying they are pure pork. they make nice talking points, especially the "handing out cell phones to poor people", but I would bet there is a little more substance to them than that. Or maybe not. but the way they are presented sounds like more GOP talking points than actual problems.

Re: Coronavirus
yes it is. in fact, if you graph the data, the trend line is exponential and the formula is y = 126.26e^0.2885x
if the daily increases are themselves increasing it is exponential data. there are different degrees of exponential growth depending on the exponent! see first chart for the visual representation:
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/
click on the 'logarithmic' tab in the upper left and you'll notice that we have had exponential growth since march 1st

there's a distinct difference from a moral perspective between the GOP slush fund bill and the democrats' bill that includes funding for what they feel are noble causes, and pretty much every bill in congress gets unrelated stuff added to it, but this is an extraordinarily urgent circumstance. these bills need to be as clean as possible
edit: as it turns out, it would appear that the democratic bill was nothing more than a political strategy to freak out senate republicans enough to make concessions on the senate bill, which the house would then approve. and it seems to have worked:
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/coronavirus-senate-bill-congress_n_5e79160cc5b6f5b7c5493fe3?ncid=fcbklnkushpmg00000013&utm_source=politics_fb&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=hp_fb_pages§ion=politics&fbclid=IwAR1yHLCmGKvbiMG6v10K0EiEdim7zSKANaFkWAvca0kXNwZEtm36C-Y5ZCo
looks like 20% of the 2 trillion dollar senate bill will be corporate loans, which will now require some congressional oversight rather than simply allowing trump's treasury secretary to dole out 400 billion dollars to whoever he wants in an election year. the original bill would have allowed this guy to not even divulge who the money was going to until after the election:

God help Ukraine
God help those fleeing misery to come here
God help the Middle East
God help the climate
God help US health care
God help those fleeing misery to come here
God help the Middle East
God help the climate
God help US health care

Much of the supposed Dem inclusions in the Bill were non-existent GOP taking points. They went to many of their tried and true lies to rile up their base. Spoke of Dems including abortion funding, went to the old Fox News favorite of “Obama phones”, Republicans appearing on Fox News (Crenshaw) claiming Dems disagreed on raising unemployment to help the American workers... but not mentioning that the disagreement was the GOP wanting to raise it $200 dollars and the Dems wanting to raise it $600. They (the GOP) put language in the bill that would allow companies to fire large amounts of employees and Dems wanted the language rewritten to protect workers while also keeping corporations from using the funds as stock buybacks (again) to fatten their own pockets.
Dems and the White House, through Pelosi and others negotiating with Mnuchin had an agreement on a bill... it was ready to go until McConnell killed it on behalf of donors. The vote was supposed to happen and pass, until Mitch had his people rewrite if and turn it into a large bailout to Wall Street while cutting funds to hospitals, health care workers, and “the little guy”... that’s what much of this fight was about. They’ll (the GOP) claim victory in helping the worker, but the bill they put up, that didn’t get through, had cut relief funds to the average Joe and medical relief drastically.
All the talk of how important this was, yet it was Mitch that sent the senate on recess over the weekend - after claiming they wouldn’t stop working until they helped the American people - so he could attend a party with Kavanaugh and a recently appointed conservative judge in Kentucky.

Re: Coronavirus
Are these standard provisions or did they really delay this bill because they had to fight to prevent this disgusting person (and family) from directly/indirectly profiting off of this tragedy? I really hope it's the former, if I had to guess it's the latter.

Re: Coronavirus
The GOP was always against giving citizens enough to truly help in a crisis. It’s always been about painting an image of caring while withholding
about that previous statement i said regarding Crenshaw on Fox, very disingenuously and dishonestly claiming Dems were against raising unemployment $200.... yep
One immediate shortcoming of the bill being voiced in left policy circles: The $1,200 checks are only a one-time payment.
Dems had pushed for a mechanism to have widespread payments be recurring, and -- as far as I can tell & per prior leg text -- they were unsuccessful
about that previous statement i said regarding Crenshaw on Fox, very disingenuously and dishonestly claiming Dems were against raising unemployment $200.... yep
Critically, however, Democrats won a big concession on unemployment insurance -- an extra $600 a week for at least four months
Top Senate Dems pushed for recurring payments, & Pelosi's bill had bigger per person amount

Re: Coronavirus
Republicans had wanted to give Trump’s Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin sweeping authority to dispense half-a-trillion in loans to private businesses, without having to explain to outsiders what he was doing or who was getting the money for six months.
Democrats fumed that such a $500 billion “slush fund,” tightly and secretly controlled by the president and his top aides, could be easily abused, or awarded to GOP political donors with almost no outside accountability. Trump, whose hotel empire has been threatened with the entire hospitality industry, explicitly refused to promise not to award himself juicy government loans from the fund.
Democrats said Tuesday that they succeeded in adding language to the bill that increases accountability, including both an inspector general and a new Congressional panel to monitor the loans. The constraints are similar to the ones placed on the Wall Street bailout from the 2008 financial meltdown.
Mnuchin will now have to tell lawmakers who’s getting the loans, Reuters reported, citing a source in the administration.
Democrats said they managed to include significant unemployment insurance upgrades in the bill. Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Tuesday morning that “it looks like” the final deal would allow workers who lose their jobs to stay on their employers’ healthcare while the government pays their full salary for four months.

Exponential growth doesn't mean squaring, it is (starting value) * rate^period.
In this case, we're at say 89*(2)^(period) where our period is roughly every 3 to 3.5 days. Obviously data here is shaky due to our test scenario, but we are at exponential growth still.

Re: Coronavirus
This is another massive failure by the Trump administration. Forcing States to outbid each other in order to get needed medical equipment instead of actually using the defense production act to coordinate production and getting States and their medical professionals the tools needed to truly fight this.
