2016 Chino Hills HS team with 3 future lottery picks

Post#1 » by Scuall » Wed Mar 25, 2020 7:11 pm

Despite your feelings about the egotistical dad, erratic jump shooting Lonzo, thieves guild member LiAngelo, and matador defender Lamelo, the national champion 2016 Chino Hills team is about to have their 2nd and 3rd lottery picks in the 2020 draft. Lamelo is top-2 and Onyeka Okongwu (declared today) will be gone by picks 8-9. That would be impressive for a private school that recruits nationally, or even for a top-ranked university. Just unbelievable when you consider Chino Hills is a public school.

Here's one of the highlight games of the season against Mater Dei, a Div I filled team that many considered would be Chino Hills first loss of the season. Game was over in the 3rd minute.

I gotta admit LiAngelo was a baller. He was never going to the NBA, but he could definitely light it up. Not bad for a team described as 3 brothers, their cousin, and a good friend.

Here's a rather informative comment from the video's comment section about just how incredible Chino Hills' team was.

I don't think people understand how big of a deal this team was. Mater Dei is consistently an insane sports program (especially basketball) because they're private. They outsource all of their players and have the money to build it up with coaching. Chino Hills is literally a random public school that has three brothers that all dominate with Big O and Eli Scott also being great players in their own right. Wish I could have been there for this game because this is honestly so astonishing to see a team like Mater Dei struggle like this against a public school. Chino Hills will most likely never see this type of talent (as a cohesive team) ever again.

One day in Polk high I scored 4 touchdowns in a game.

 perfect timing on that one. Haha

Has there been a movie/documentary made about the 2016 Chino Hills team?

It's funny watching the game you would probably rank the brothers
1LiAngelo
2 Lonzo
3 LaMelo

Although to be fair, melo is about 3 years younger than everyone in that game.

Turned out to be the opposite.

I could see Lonzo being 1 in that game, but LaMelo was by far the worst. Hiding on defence, some horrid shots

I remember playing JV basketball my freshman year of high school and playing one of Mater deis frosh/soph teams (apparently they had 3 besides their JV and varsity team at that time) and they completely destroyed us, not even a contest. They're probably the most famous thing to come out of my city which kinda sucks since even though they are located in a somewhat rough part of town most of their alumni come from rich areas like Newport, Irvine or out of Orange county all together.

My former coworker attended that game against chino hills actually. He was not a fan of Melo after that game I clearly remember that.

I've never really considered myself a fan of any of the Ball kids before, so I wasn't expecting to care when I started watching footage from that game. But the energy and crowd noise is insane, just pure electricity.

I wouldn't be surprised by this at all. He's already got great defensive instincts, and has the build and athleticism for the modern NBA post player. Even as a freshman he looked like Gobert on defense against Mater Dei.

He was absolutely perfect for that chaotic defensive system they ran. Kid was stuck on numerous 2 on 1 and 3 on 1 breaks and made great reads and stops. He has some All-Defensive team potential in the league.

Big O? I thought that was Oscar Robertson's nickname.

I’d still take these guys over Chino Hills:

That’s the 1982 Dunbar team from Baltimore, which had Muggsy Bogues, Reggie Williams, and Reggie Lewis (who didn’t even start). Plus a number of other good college players.
