When will the NBA return?

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/28911848/when-nba-return-latest-updates-amid-coronavirus-suspension
Latest intel
March 24: NBA front office executives want the league to provide tentative contingencies on a return to play this season, but league officials have been reticent to share those estimates with teams, according to a report by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The loosest of drop-dead dates on completing the NBA Finals is Labor Day weekend in early September, sources say, which teams say necessitates games starting back up by July 1 -- and practice facilities reopening weeks before that.

No one in the NBA wants to be tied to Labor Day weekend, because no one -- not the commissioner, not the teams, not the NBPA -- wants to limit the possibility of the NBA salvaging something of a season. If the NBA season could start later in July and finish later in September, well, no one is ruling out that idea, either.

How Celtics' draft stock shapes up if NBA doesn't end hiatus
NICK FRIAR | MARCH 24, 2020

https://weei.radio.com/blogs/nick-friar/how-celtics-draft-stock-shapes-up-if-nba-doesnt-end-hiatus
The first impact felt by the cancellation of March Madness is players losing the chance to compete for the NCAA title at the national level. But there’s more to it for some. While there are those who will get drafted regardless of what would’ve happened in the tournament, there are others who could benefit from a major stretch on college basketball’s biggest stage....

Now, Danny Ainge could try to move a pick, maybe multiple. But that’s become a greater challenge than it might’ve been previously. Because teams will have to rely heavily on their scouting from the college regular season. Of course, there’s plenty of time for teams to research players now since there are no live sports whatsoever for the foreseeable future, but there’s still a lot to sift through — there’s also value in studying a player in a workout setting.

On top of all that, there are some players who were still deciding on whether or not to declare for the 2020 NBA Draft. No March Madness or pre-draft workouts could lead players to the conclusion that it’s in their best interest to play another year at the college level. And this draft already wasn’t expected to have a deep class. Take out a few impactful players and Boston’s picks can lose quite a bit of value.

What happens to Draft picks, without a March Madness?
Will players declare for the 2021 Draft instead?

When will the "2020 Draft" even be this year?

What moving the Tokyo Olympics means for the NBA and Team USA
Brian Windhorst and Tim Bontemps | March 24, 2020

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/28946656/what-moving-tokyo-olympics-means-nba-team-usa
Could the Olympics and the NBA season now conflict?

Yes. Japan and the International Olympic Committee are not certain when the Tokyo Olympics will take place. While the summer of 2021 remains a strong possibility, the Games could move to earlier in the 2021 calendar, possibly spring.

Furthermore, commissioner Adam Silver said last week that the NBA's calendar could change -- the NBA schedule could perhaps shift forward.

As a result of these potential changes, the Olympics and the NBA season could run concurrently, or close to it.

Until a vaccine is produced, society is just going to have to accept on some level that people are just going to continue to get this virus. Otherwise there is no way sports leagues can resume unless you have some system where everyone is constantly isolated and then tested constantly. Are players OK with playing against people with coronavirus? Just because you tested negative yesterday doesn't mean you're still negative when we tip off tonight. Are we even sure at this point that having the virus once gives a person 100 pct immunity in the future?

Summer Ball: Why A Radical Change to the NBA Schedule Isn’t As Crazy As You Think
Chris Mannix | Marche 26, 2020

https://www.si.com/nba/2020/03/26/nba-schedule-change-summer-television-coronavirus
As COVID-19, the coronavirus, spreads across the U.S., the NBA is preparing for the possibility of playing a summer schedule for the first time in league history. There is resounding ownership support for finding a way to finish the season, NBA officials told SI.com, even if that means re-starting the season in late June, even if that pushes the Finals into September. Some estimates have the NBA losing as much as $1 billion in a lost season, an eye popping number team owners desperately want to bring down.

A salvaged NBA season would benefit owners and players, as well as the thousands of in-arena workers, vendors and venues that rely on it. It would also provide the league with valuable data on the viability of a summer schedule.

Earlier this month, Steve Koonin, CEO of the Atlanta Hawks, appearing on a panel at the annual MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, offered a detailed proposal to radically change the NBA schedule. Koonin’s proposal, first reported by ESPN, would see the start of the NBA season move from mid-October to mid-December, with the Finals taking place in August and free agency in September. The shift, Koonin argued, would take the early stage of the NBA season out of competition with the NFL and college football, while pushing its marquee program into the summer, where the sports calendar is significantly lighter.

They should not return.

Corona will come in 3 waves over next 9 months.

Like Hayward said, many free agents by summer.

Impacts of a lower 2020-21 cap/tax for the Boston Celtics
By Keith P Smith | Mar 27, 2020

https://www.celticsblog.com/2020/3/27/21197264/impacts-of-a-lower-2020-21-cap-tax-for-the-boston-celtics-danny-ainge-gordon-hayward
One suggestion making the rounds is putting a lower bound on the salary cap for 2020-21 of only allowing it to go as low as this season’s mark of $109 million. The same six teams will still have cap space, just less of it. If the cap goes even lower, down to the most-pessimistic levels, the landscape could change entirely.

Boston has the following breakdown roster-wise heading into the summer of 2020:

· Fully Guaranteed (9 players) – Jaylen Brown, Carsen Edwards, Romeo Langford, Vincent Poirier, Marcus Smart, Jayson Tatum, Kemba Walker, Grant Williams, Robert Williams III

· Non-Guaranteed (2 players) – Javonte Green, Daniel Theis

· Potential Free Agents (6 players) – Tacko Fall (Restricted – Two-Way), Gordon Hayward (Unrestricted - Player Option), Enes Kanter (Unrestricted – Player Option), Semi Ojeleye (Restricted – Team Option, becomes Non-Guaranteed if TO exercised), Brad Wanamaker (Restricted), Tremont Waters (Restricted – Two-Way)

· Potential First Round Draft Picks (3 picks) – via Memphis Grizzlies (if 7-30), Boston’s own, via Milwaukee Bucks (if 8-30)

No matter what, the Celtics aren’t going to be a cap space team. They’re at over $95 million in guaranteed salary alone. And that’s before adding in any of the three first round picks, and also projecting to let walk all eight of the players who are non-guaranteed or potential free agents. That’s not going to happen. Thus, no cap space for Boston this summer.

What the Celtics are like to be is a luxury tax team. Just how high that tax bill goes will depend on what happens with those free agents. Here’s a projection on how those decisions play out:

· Boston guarantees both Theis and Green. Theis is a no-brainer. Green makes just $1.5 million. The only reason to waive him is to create a roster spot for one of the draft picks.

· Hayward and Kanter both exercise their player options. Given the relative uncertainty of where things might be this offseason, both Hayward and Kanter are likely to opt in at $34.2 million and $5 million respectively for 2020-21.

· Celtics exercise their team option for Semi Ojeleye. $1.7 million is more than fair for what Ojeleye provides.

· Boston issues qualifying offers for Tacko Fall and Tremont Waters. The qualifying offer for a Two-Way player is ridiculously low. The Celtics will retain rights to match any offer either signs for now.

· Celtics issue a qualifying offer for Brad Wanamaker. This one is tough, but it’s only $1.9 million for the QO for Wanamaker. He’s been a rotation player all season. There is also no guarantee Wanamaker would re-sign for that amount either.

I personally don't think there is any chance this season is completed in any form, and there is a very high likelihood the next season might have a delayed start.

I would assume the draft will still happen, not a great year to have three picks though is it, Danny really needs to see if he can trade one or two of them for future picks. The cap dropping is an interesting wrinkle for players with team or player options for next season.

There is genuine concern here in Australia that some teams in the two biggest sports (the AFL and the NRL) might not survive this financially and there could be less teams whenever the next season starts.

10 Takeaways: Roster decisions Boston must make before next season
By Keith P Smith | Mar 31, 2020

https://www.celticsblog.com/2020/3/31/21200975/10-takeaways-roster-decisions-boston-must-make-before-next-season-celtics
At the end of last week, CelticsBlog covered what a lower salary cap/luxury tax could mean for Boston. With that in mind, the Celtics do have some work to do before the start of the 2020-21 season.

Let’s start with a qualifier: we don’t have any idea what is happening with the remainder of the 2019-20 season yet. That means we don’t know what the impact is on the 2020-21 season. If the 2019-20 season is resumed and pushes into July or August or September, the expectation is that dates related to the 2020 NBA Draft, player/team options, qualifying offers and contract guarantees will push back.

This batch of 10 Takeaways is going to presented in chronological order of deadline as they are today. If the date is the same, the order is done alphabetically by the player’s last name

Read the remainder of the Article on the site. It's very Informative, and thorough.

Coronavirus: NBA reportedly considering playing out season at single site without fans
Jack Baer | Yahoo Sports | Mar 31, 2020

https://sports.yahoo.com/nba-playoffs-coronavirus-pandemic-regular-season-playoffs-single-site-041634778.html
A possible coronavirus endgame? 30 teams, one arena, no fans
Per the Post, a group of executives are keen on the idea of arranging for the season to be played out at a single location:

Though news of the coronavirus pandemic has been discouraging, NBA executives still cling to hope of arranging a one-site, fan-less, 16-team playoff and a five-to-seven-game regular-season prelude, according to multiple NBA sources.

“They’re very determined to have a champion,” one industry source said.

The playoffs could be reduced to a slew of best-of-three series across the board. A single-elimination format has been all but ruled out — only under consideration as a last resort.

“Nothing is off the table,” another league official said.

As far as where this could happen, one natural answer is UNLV in Las Vegas, which has hosted summer league games and is in a city with a massive hotel capacity. Berman also reports that there have been talks about the Bahamas, Orlando, Atlantic City, Hawaii and Louisville for the playoffs.

ESPN’s Jay Williams threw out another idea earlier Monday: cruise ships.

They key number at play here is 70 regular season games, as regional networks reportedly have contracts calling for at least 70 games for local teams. All teams are currently around the mid-60s in games played, though many of those games have been nationally televised.

The reported best-case scenario is starting up the season in late June — in line with past reports — and delaying the opening of the 2020-21 season to Christmas. The NBA draft would also be postponed in such a situation.

I hope they don't do this. It's a foolish health risk to have a production like this - it's not just going to be players, but staffs and crew and media and so on. But if they do go forward with this, the unpredictable nature of a 3-game series could produce an unexpected champion.

Imo, no need to play remaining regular season games.

Start directly with playoffs:

2 venues, one for Eastern playoffs, other for western Playoffs

Best of 5 first round
Best of 7 conference semis, conference finals and NBA final

Game every 2nd day

Max 9 days you finish first round

Max 13 days for conference semis, conference finals and final

So max 48 playing days and 2+2+2 days of between rounds...so you need 54 days max.

No fans off course, but you can make spectacular visual and sound effects.

Shouldn't be too hard to keep everyone safe. 20 teams. Each team has say 50 people total between players and staff. You're only looking at 1,000 people. You need 1 hotel, a few of buses and a couple of courts. Everyone would have to be on strict quarantine. So what? Quarantine everyone for a month at the hotel before the post season starts.
