Florida hasn't taken this serious until basically 2/3 days ago. When they start massive testing they will have over 10,000 confirmed cases easily.
The only reason we have a high amount of tests is, because University of Florida and Shands Hospital partnered together to test a bunch of non symptomatic seniors, in our largest senior populated area.

In Latvia you have to get two negative tests to be considered recovered. Yesterday in evening news they showed a guy who is not afraid to tell about his sickness and recovery (got the virus while in business trip in Spain, had mild symptoms, got tested and is staying at home). So he feels fine now, but after 22 days tests still showed virus. Says that it is not exactly clear how to get the test - his family doctor advises that he should just go directly to drive-in test site, but there they want the "assignment" from the doctor. (I do not know the correct term, but if you go to specialist doctors or tests you must have a paper (or electronical) type of thing that your family doctor directs you to have this or that. Family doctor is what you would call general practitioner).
So therefore we have almost no official recoveries. It is kinda understandable - tests should be allocated more to those in danger.

To be more accurate, things have been returning back to normal for about 7-10 days and yet, coronavirus does not seem to be surging, as I am hopeful that it is contained. Early concerns from the society as a whole + clear message from the government and everyone abiding + masks + social distancing from early on + numerous testing + cheap healthcare + culture, all contributed to I suppose being one of the model case on combating a pandemic.

Which country are you talking about?

Sorry.. South Korea.

Its terrible that this could have been prevented if the Chinese government didn't initially censor and withhold the information from Chinese citizens and foreign governments. Look at the devastation its caused around the world; death, sickness, stranded abroad, bankruptcy, loss of income, etc. Reminds you of the Soivets trying to conceal the magnitude of the Chernobyl disaster at the early stages. I really hope they're held accountable.

A great reminder of why the internet shouldn't be strictly censored

Health insurance premiums could skyrocket because of the coronavirus pandemic, according to analysis released last week.

Premiums could jump as much as 40 percent next year if the coronavirus ends up hospitalizing millions of Americans, state insurance marketplace Covered California’s analysis warned.

The analysis also found that Insurers, employers and individuals are expected to pay anywhere from $34 billion to $251 billion in additional costs for testing and treating COVID-19. A liberal estimation would boost the about $1.2 trillion costs per year by 20 percent or more, potentially leading to a 40 percent increase in premiums.

I don't care if I sound like a broke record, but we need single payer healthcare to take care of our citizens. Health insurance premiums are going to explode next year for those that are able to keep their jobs and health insurance due to corona virus. This is assuming that people are able to keep their jobs and their employer provided healthcare insurance and this looks like it could be a depression in the making. As a country we already live paycheck to paycheck.

It could have been reduced in China. It could have been prevented if world leaders didn't allow this to spread.

I absolutely agree. I wonder how it will come about though. Will Biden pick it up? Will they put it back in the Democratic parties platform? Will the Republican party post Trump support it?

Sen. Kelly Loeffler sold at least $18 million more in stocks before the coronavirus crash than previously reported

Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) benefited from stock trades worth millions of dollars shortly before the general public was alerted to the severity of the Covid-19 crisis, selling off shares in industries that have been adversely affected by the coronavirus pandemic and buying shares of companies that have benefited, according to an Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) report published late Tuesday.

Loeffler, who sits on the Senate Health Committee, first began selling stocks on January 24 — the same day that committee held a private all-members session on Covid-19 — and continued making trades in late February and early March.

According to her latest financial disclosure, which the senator provided to the AJC, her largest transaction involved the sale of $18.7 million in Intercontinental Exchange stock in three separate deals dated February 26 and March 11. Intercontinental Exchange operates global exchanges for several financial and commodity markets — and since Loeffler made her first sale, its stock has fallen by 16 percent.

Raising questions, however, is the fact that beyond Intercontinental Exchange, the couple also sold stock from other companies ultimately affected by the coronavirus, including a combined $155,000 or so from retailers Ross Stores, TJX Cos. (the parent corporation for T.J. Maxx and Marshalls), and upscale athletic-apparel company Lululemon over the same period of time.

And as Loeffler and Sprecher made those sales, a number of stocks added to their portfolio have seen gains as the Covid-19 crisis deepens. For instance, the couple obtained $206,777 in shares of chemical giant Dupont, which produces critical protective gear to combat transmission of the virus, in four separate transactions in late February and early March. They also acquired shares in telecommuting company Citrix on January 24 — again, the same day the Senate Health Committee held a private meeting about the coronavirus.

Four days after the briefing (and her acquisition of Citrix stocks), Loeffler accused Democrats of misleading the American public about the Trump administration’s response to the outbreak for political gain.

Why is Loeffler and Burr still in power? Why haven't they been forced to resign? This is sickening.

Jobless claims soar to record-breaking 6.648 million

The U.S. Labor Department released fresh data on Thursday morning that showed the effect of the novel coronavirus on employment in the U.S. The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits spiked to a record-breaking 6.648 million for the week ending March 28. Consensus expectations were for 3.76 million claims. The prior week’s figure was revised higher to 3.307 million claims from 3.283 million. Prior to the week ending March 21, the previous record was 695,000 claims filed the week ended October 2, 1982.

“The deterioration of the labor market in the past two weeks almost defies belief,” Nick Bunker, Indeed Hiring Lab's director of economic research, wrote in an email Thursday. “Since March 14, approximately 3.8% of the working age population has filed for unemployment. For context, during the Great Recession, the share of the population dropped 4.6 percentage points from December 2007 to December 2009. That took two years. The labor market is in a historic freefall."

China ****ed over Europe in this catastrophe. However as it pertains to America, we ****ed ourselves over. Our administration saw this all taking place on the other side of the world, and instead of taking notes, they downplayed it and acted like that would never happen here. It shouldn't have taken the NBA canceling games for people to finally start taking this seriously. That was the domino that got the ball rolling, but if Rudy Gobert didn't test positive then maybe it would have been another week or two before action was taken while the virus continued spreading completely unfettered through more sporting events, restaurants, concerts, etc.

There were many many reports long before this spread worldwide. They could have informed earlier, but that is NOT why it spread. I knew about this and the danger long before it spread.

The blame belongs squarely on every leader worldwide. They each failed their citizens. Chinese citizens should deal with their own leadership, but we gotta deal with ours.

Exactly.

By early February it was evident that this is a dangerous virus, yet the majority of the leaders started to act in like mid March.

Every EU leader was like we cannot get that. There were diseases here and there but they stayed away from Europe in the last 100 years - this will be the same. They had no valid reasoning for that only some historical experiences. It is surprising how many people tend to think that what happened yesterday will definitely happen tomorrow as well.

In that sense it's the same as how we treat climate change...

Put things in perspective

Ecuador

Coronavirus in Ecuador: the Guayaquil drama, which has more deaths from covid-19 than entire countries and fights against the clock to give them a decent burial

Residents in Guayaquil, Ecuador's most populous city, are sharing videos of bodies dumped in the streets.

Forensic services are struggling to pick up bodies of those who have died in recent days - not just from coronavirus but from other causes as well.

The country has confirmed 2,700 infections and 93 deaths — 60 of them in Guayaquil and its immediate surroundings. But municipal officials there said they have recovered at least 400 bodies in recent days.

Mayor Cynthia Viteri, who announced that she has tested positive for the virus, said the national government should be responsible for collecting the corpses.
“They’re leaving them in the villages, they fall in front of hospitals,” she said in a Twitter video message to residents last week. “No one wants to recover them.”

The national nurses association said up to 370 nurses across the country are believed to have been infected and that five have died.

The country’s first known coronavirus case — confirmed on Feb. 29 — was a 70-year-old woman who had arrived two weeks earlier from Italy and resided outside of Guayaquil.

I was watching videos on IG last night from El Salvador. It's tragic. The ultra poor of the world are going to get the worst look at this as they have such little in the way of healthcare structure to fail. With no effective emergency services it's going to hit them the hardest.

This is why I don't necessarily blame the Governments as a whole for what happened, but I will blame them harshly if they don't learn from this and put the necessary measures into place to prevent something like this from happening again.

-Load up on PPE and ventilators. Keep producing them and make sure our national stockpile is far greater than what it was. Heck, you can create a few factories in some midwestern cities, funded entirely by diverting part of our defense budget to the cause, and have them create these items. Keep them up and running when you are not in crisis so that you can quickly fire them up when you are in crisis.

-Do a deep analysis on where the virus hit first and why. That would give you an idea on what to shut down when the next virus hits. The moment you hear of a weird illness in Shanghai (for example) you go into action on restricting travel at the key airports.

-Permanently many of the restrictions on testing in times of crisis. This was what caused us to fall so far behind everyone else on testing. The FDA had guidelines in place that prevented us from immediately accepting the tests from the WHO. The CDC then, foolishly, opted for their own test which failed. That should never happen again. Cut the red tape.
