Did you read the article? Did you even click the link of what they claim. The article says this
"One of the reasons the CDC's Redfield gave for potentially changing the guidance on masks is that the coronavirus can be spread when people are asymptomatic, and therefore having everyone covering their faces -- as has been the norm in Hong Kong and
other parts of Asia since January -- could help rein in transmission."
Click the reference link and you get the below same as CDC, again

People at moderate risk * of infection: surgical or disposable mask for medical use.
*People at moderate risk of infection include those working in areas of high population density (eg, hospitals, train stations), those have been or live with somebody who is quarantined, and administrative staff, police, security, and couriers whose work is related to COVID-19.
•
People at low risk † of infection: disposable mask for medical use.
†People at low risk of infection include those staying in areas of high population density (eg, supermarket, shopping mall), who work indoors, who seek health care in medical institutions (other than fever clinics), and gatherings of children aged 3–6 years and school students.
•
People at very low risk ‡ of infection: do not have to wear a mask or can wear non-medical mask (such as cloth mask).
‡People at very low risk of infection include those who mostly stay at home, who do outdoor activities, and who work or study in well-ventilated areas.

Surgical masks can prevent transmission of respiratory viruses from people who are ill. It is essential for people who are symptomatic (even if they have mild symptoms) to wear a surgical mask.
•
Wear a surgical mask when taking public transport or staying in crowded places. It is important to wear a mask properly and practice good hand hygiene before wearing and after removing a mask.

•
Wear a mask if you have respiratory symptoms, such as a cough or runny nose.

The effectiveness of wearing a face mask to protect yourself from contracting viruses is thought to be limited. If you wear a face mask in confined, badly ventilated spaces, it might help avoid catching droplets emitted from others but if you are in an open-air environment, the use of face mask is not very efficient.
So where is it that the Asian countries have been saying to wear masks? Maybe China sort of? This is the CNN article reference, wtf kind of journalist work is that
Also that is the same study in the wired article that was posted a couple pages back. Please actually read the study rather than just blindly assuming what CNN is claiming is true. Because that is a group of studies with other cases of contradicting results, and many of the studies are clinic based vs no masks or not masking symptomatic cases. That is NOT the scenario people here are talking about.
If you READ the study you find stuff like this
"comparing the N95 respirator with paper surgical masks in volunteers found that surgical masks, even when worn in multiple layers (up to five), filtered ambient particles poorly"
"another similar study reported no effect of adding the use of both gown and mask to the usual handwashing routine on the development of illness in personnel caring for infants with respiratory disease"
"The authors of Jacobs 2009 were unable to detect a difference in incidence of ILI of surgical mask wearing compared to no mask in healthcare workers in a Japanese hospital"
Not exactly a glowing endorsement for masks. The entire group of studies is a mixed bag like I said in another post
Much like the wired article, i guess they assume people will actually not read the study and think they are being forthright. The WIRED article was much of the same they ignored what the case study was actually about and just pointed it towards the effectiveness of a mask in masking everyone and forgot to mention the cases were for HCW, symptomatic or VS masking no one.
It is like people are just finding an article that has a headline that is aligned with their position and just post it. Don't even bother to read it and check their references. Then people follow up reply with sarcastic remarks, thinking they are smart, when really they are only proving they are either lazy or cannot read, or both
