Absolutely hilarious how all those Grizzlies go nuts, because of this totally legal move, that we teach 10 year olds over here in Europe. Makes you wonder what is going on with skills developement in the US.

eh, no. everywhere in the world it's a perfectly legal move. don't do this again. the orginal thread was exhausting enough.

No it's not, you have just found a one example where it wasn't called, but nobody relies on that move. You could do it every time when you pump fake, but that would be a circus, not basketball. I just hate this deformation of the game of basketaball that's being promoted these days by the NBA and their fans.
Come on man, seriously? We've had enough of these threads and the posting of the rule books and the instructional videos from multiple leagues that no one should be arguing about this being a travel. In fact in this case it would be that the NBA has been behind on a rule that everyone else considered legal and fundamental and they were calling it a travel.

Every player would say that's a travel, KG and Nurkic for example. They know basketball don't they? I don't care what anybody says, you can't pickup the pivot foot, anyone who knows anything about basketball knows that. It's basic stuff, but stupid fans don't care about fundamentals of the beautiful game anymore. Their ignorance is ruining the game.

its literally in the nba rules saying that you can lift your pivot as long as you shoot or pass before you land.

Wouldn't seeing it not called a travel change that perception though? It just doesn't make sense why guys in retirement like Allen, Payton, and KG would say that it's a travel unless it was called during their time.
True, maybe they just conclude that the ref missed the call, lol

Well not just seeing it not called a travel once, seeing it not called a travel over the course of their 15-20 year career lol. That definitely would've changed their thinking, you'd expect. Unless that wasn't the case and refs actually used to call this a travel. That's what I'm genuinely curious about.

Hmm, that I am not sure of, might have been the case that it was being called that way. The NBA does do rules it's own way at times, and I know officials in the past have indicated that some moves are called a travel in the flow of the game if it looks like a travel even if it might not have been.

I do remember some Euro players who would come and do certain moves in the NBA and get called for a travel.

For example you know at some point in time you might have found a ref to call this a travel in the flow of the game:

It's about stupid interpretation of the rule, not the real rule. NBA is manipulating the rules and fans are all for it. Anyone who ever played basketball knows that's not wa natural move, and you look stupid even doing it. I once played against some kid doing that move and he got on my damn nerves.

Yes, before you land on EITHER foot. You can't lift a pivot foot and land, period. You have to shoot or pass. That's where this stupid interpretation comes from. The goal is to change basketball fundamentals. It's a disgrace.

That's the mystery. We now have videos from the NBA saying it's not a travel but did their interpretation change at some point? Were they influenced by FIBA? Because we have all these NBA players saying it's a travel. Looking at step throughs all the way back to McHale, Gilmore, and Frazier, they basically always did the "2 foot jump".

I found an exception from Frazier here at 1:27, but based on player reactions it looks like it was called a travel...

Can't tell if you're being facetious/sarcastic. Isn't Kobe's pivot the right foot? He lifts it and lays it up.

the f+ck are you talking about? it's been a basketball move since forever. it's the fiba saying that it is a legal move. you either must be trolling like a champ or you are a bit daft in the head. just because some players don't know the rules, doesn't mean that it's illegal. imagine how good they could have been if they knew the rules.

i mean before that his left should have been his pivot foot not his right. It would have been legal if he didnt put his left foot back down.

This move is a little ambiguous because it bring the "gather step" interpretation into play. To me it looks like he gathers and then steps back with his left foot and then his right. The makes the left foot the pivot foot. He lifts the left/pivot foot (legal in itself), but then puts it back down again before shooting (a violation).

Given a lenient interpretation of when he gathers, you could say that he is still gathering when he steps back with the left foot, so his right foot is the pivot foot and the move is not a travel. But that hinges on interpreting the gather, which is a separate issue.
Just because it happened to you, doesn't make it interesting.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Yesterday I was lying; today I'm telling the truth.

Just because you capitalize a word doesn’t make it true.

The rule is that you can lift your pivot foot as long as you’re going for a shot or pass before putting the pivot foot back down. Been hooping for a long time man, people need to get this.

From the NBA rulebook:
Section VIII—Pivot
a. A pivot takes place when a player, who is holding the ball, steps once or more than once in any direction with the same foot, with the other foot (pivot foot) in contact with the floor.
b. If the player wishes to dribble after a pivot, the ball must be out of his hand before the pivot foot is raised off the floor. If the player raises his pivot off the floor, he must pass or attempt a field goal before the foot is returned to the floor.
I don't need a watch, I'm on time when I get there.

I think the main thing that makes it shady is his left foot landing before his right on his stepback dribble, but I'm not sure that you can say it's a jump stop or anything like that. It's not even a gather dribble. If you interpret it frame by frame, you could say his left foot becomes the pivot and he lifts it and that's absolutely a travel. It might be my homer shades, but to me his dribble is still live, and only after he gathers he clearly establishes the right foot as his pivot.

I think another player to watch for examples of this is Kyrie. On that dribble pullback, pump fake, his pivot is technically unestablished. He can pivot on his left and fade away, or pivot to his right and fadeaway, or do all these crazy step-throughs, or even just rise up and shoot from that position. That's what makes these moves so difficult to guard--the offensive player always leaves more than one option available.

would imagine if you do that move in the US at any rec league/gym/playground it will be called a travel. in reality it's not. what's crazy is that more NBA players aren't taking advantage of this. another testament to kobe because he's the only person that I've seen that's done this move several times that I can remember.

Okay, it's been established that it's TECHNICALLY legal. But it's a lame AF move. When dudes (or girls) do it, most people will shake their head and lose a little respect. It's similar to relying on the ref to call a ticky tack foul because you missed a lay-up or you lost the ball because of a minor hand check.

The rule should be clarified/changed that if you lift your pivot foot, you have to shoot or pass before either foot touches the ground again. As that's how I'd guess the majority of people were taught the game, and how the greatest of players of all-time viewed the rule as.
