Re: Obi Toppin/Dayton Flyers
His defense/lateral quickness just makes him really hard to play. It's harder to have defensive liabilities in the front-court. Mike Schmitz posted a scouting report of him and pretty much shredded him on his defensive liabilities which may be unfixable due to his body type.

Just by process of elimination, because I don’t think many players should be a top 5 pick in this draft, I think Toppin deserves it. If this was a better class he’s probably more around the 7-10 pick. I can’t see Toppin failing at the next level and he could help a team a lot.

He reminds me of PHX Amare. Their running stride is indentical, he has the exact same dunking technique and IMO he can develop his jumper like Amare. They even have the same defensive tendencies

Re: Obi Toppin/Dayton Flyers
I have him late lotto. I just can't see him ever being an average defender with his abnormally high center of gravity and poor lateral quickness. Not a huge believer in his shot either, although that has a chance to stick. NBA bigs will be able to move him around in the paint, really his only saving grace is his amazing verticality and feel around the basket, IMO.
Solid option if a team needs a bench big to provide a spark, but if I am swinging for the fences there are a bunch of guys I'd take ahead of him.

I just don't see it with him. Amare was an insane athlete and Toppin isn't, so I don't really see the comp there.
In most drafts I don't think he'd even sniff the lotto.

How much does Toppin remind you guys of Derrick Williams from Arizona? I ant help but think Obi will be a bust I’m the NBA. He just happened to dominante his conference

Dont agree with that comp much.
He is maybe even more athletic so sure he is overrated but his post play is dominant enough where he can fit into the modern small ball 5 role and thrive as a starter in that. if he plays mostly the 4 in a more traditional system, his advantages will be less and if picked in the top 5 could be considered an overpick early on until he goes somewhere that knows how to use him

Re: Obi Toppin/Dayton Flyers
His skill set reminds me of Markieff Morris. He's obviously more athletic and I think he'll play more within his skill set.
So basically a better Markieff Morris.
I originally had him as a mid-to-late lottery guy, but I've gotten higher on him. I think he could either one day be a 6MOY candidate or be a #3 on a title contender. In an ideal world I'd rather have him come off the bench as a 6MOY, but supply and demand for an NBA PF is hugley in his favor right now. The league is extremely weak at the PF position right now.
All the teams with a SF at PF can get posted and with his shooting he can even play with rim runners and PG's who like to drive and kick.
PF's who can shot and score on postups are rare, this guy can rebound, but his defense is his only draw back from being in all-star talks (if his shooting translates). If he can become above average on defense he'll be an all-star candidate one day.
He dosent need to be a game changer defensively, just fundamental and smart. Being in the right aces, keeping his hands on, just generally high iq on defense and he'll get that all-star buzz one day.
I currently have him #4 and I don't think I'm as low on this draft as the consenses.

I could see the team that drafts him being frustrated by his o-lay defense....guys just blowing by him easily. That could be a big problem.

He has some of the same offensive strengths and defensive weaknesses that Karl Towns has, though he's a couple inches smaller. It's that big upper body and high center of gravity.

Toppin is an insane athlete. I see him as more like Chris Webber than Amare.

the defense will be bad/horrible, but at the same time, the offense might be special, the finishing, post scoring, shooting, and passing is a really good combo for a big. I think it's worth betting on in the top 10, even if he ends up a 6man type that's still good value in the top 10 imo.

Re: Obi Toppin/Dayton Flyers
People sure are enamored with a 4 who gets a huge chunk of his points in the post and isn't going to be able to defend starting 4s in the NBA. He's best suited as a small ball 5. At best he's a slightly worse Julius Randle, in my opinion. He's dominated the A-10, a weak conference. I just can't see what people are so thrilled about with this guy. He can't even really drive to the basket that well.

Julius Randle has never had 3 pt range like Toppin.

True, but there’s good reason to be skeptical that Toppin will be a good 3-pt shooter. At worst, I guess he can camp in the corner and hit 3s which is more than you can say about Randle, but he’s only hitting 70% of his free throws which isn’t great and he’s only hitting 1 three a game. Not sure how well that’s going to translate to the NBA.
Overall, I think Toppin struggles with adjustment to the NBA. Dominating smaller guys in the A-10 in the post is one thing. Succeeding against the length of NBA 4s and 5s is another. Just don’t see him being incredibly capable offensively outside of the occasional 3-pt shot and he’s so stiff on defense. This is why I am bearish on Toppin.

I mean he's nothing like Randle. He's more like David Lee or John Collins than Randle.

Maybe he'll be like a Christian Wood and just try to dunk everything while taking the open 3
