I’ve got an idea for a really quick draft. What if we drafted franchises instead of players?

Three rounds, ABB format, 10 participants, and 30 NBA franchises to draft from post-merger to now. So everyone will select three franchises to build their team from.

The players you use for your roster have to be from the franchises you drafted.

I think we would have to put a cap on the Lakers though. Kareem, Shaq, Magic, Kobe, West is just ridiculous. Maybe something like you can only use two of these listed players when building out your team.

Thoughts?

The top teams would have too big of an advantage imo.

Not sure I'm in love with idea, but trying to figure out some sort of rebounders game - like your top 5 minute players must combine for at least 40 rebounds.

Along the same lines - could do a draft where every player you draft has to have at least 1.0 spg or 1.0 bpg. Would eliminate most of the super duper cheap scrubs that are often used.

Considering how much of an effect shooting/spacing tends to have on these games, what if we did a draft that negated that?

Any player that ever had a .400 3PT% or higher is not eligible. Or you could narrow it down to just not being able to pick a season where X player shot .400+ or above from 3PT. Additionally, you could lower it to .350. Just depends on how strict you want to play it I suppose.

It would be really interesting though to see the difference in voting from eliminating good shooting/spacing.

What about a drafter’s choice draft? Before the draft, each drafter picks 8 players for the draft pool. Then those are the only players who can be drafted. Could make it 10 players to give some flexibility towards the end. Each drafter would be able to pick whomever they want, namely guys who don’t normally get taken

Interesting - maybe each poster is assigned 3-4 drafts each or something so their picks don't overlap, then pick 8 players from those years.

What about a regular draft but with the only restriction being you can’t have more than one MVP on your roster?

You would still have star-powered teams but you wouldn’t be seeing guys who were 1st option players in real life as a 2nd or 3rd option on a fantasy team.

We actually did that last year.

I've wondered about this concept with colleges instead.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I think when we did something similar and someone put a bunch of terrible players on their list, fwiw.

How about drafting by position? Each of the first five rounds are exclusively one position (first position listed in player profiles at BR).

I'm not sure if people picking very early and very late in each round would have an advantage? Maybe we'd need a pretty big pool so the middle people have quality left and can compete with depth of very good players. Or we set it up so everyone has high, middle, and low picks.

Could set some parameters like maximum of 1 MVP and minimum of 5 players who made at least 1 all-star team. Would eliminate picking 10 scrubs.

Two other draft ideas.

Players born in the 1970s - eliminates LeBron and MJ

Players drafted since 2010 - all new school guys. More familiarity with the players and what they bring to the table.

Connecting years draft - the years you pick have to form a chain of 8 consecutive years.
10 nash/09 daniels
05 ginobili
06 battier/12 iguodala
08 kg/11 dirk
07 duncan
