The second figure is with intervention and preventative measures in place, however inadequate and delayed they might have been.

THIS. IS. NOT. THE. COMMON. FLU. For the life of me, I still can't fathom how anyone with a brain can't treat this seriously.

It is not the common flu, it is much worse. But the 2017-2018 flu season killed over 60,000 people. There's a wide range for deaths in any given flu season.

Actually, that makes me wonder what flu deaths will look like this season. Does anyone know if flu deaths have been uncommonly low? It would make sense to me if vulnerable people who would otherwise have died from the flu were overcome by the coronavirus instead.

Edit: As and aside, I am loving all this free time to get stuff done. Just finished building out new interior doors and this house is looking pretty sweet. Next week, I start on the kitchen :)

60K deaths is on the high end of the range. It's between 12,000 to 61,000 since 2010. So the 2018-19 figure is closer to the average estimated deaths per year. That is without having to essentially shut down the country.

Without a vaccine, this can't be viewed as the common flu.

First confirmed case of COVID-19, South Korea: January 20
First confirmed case of COVID-19, USA: January 20

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-04-18/seoul-s-full-cafes-apple-store-lines-show-mass-testing-success

Cafes bustled with customers, parks teemed with sunbathers, and the first Apple store to reopen outside China had lines snaking out the door as many South Koreans -- almost all wearing masks -- emerged from months of self-isolation.

The scene in Seoul on a picture-perfect Saturday contrasted sharply with other nations where major cities look like ghost towns as governments lock down huge swaths of the population or impose strict restrictions on social gatherings.

Initially one of the hardest-hit with the second-highest number of cases globally, South Korea has managed to curb the spread without taking measures that were too severe. It didn’t require businesses to close or restrict travel.

South Korea launched a massive testing and contact-tracing campaign that significantly curtailed the outbreak and kept many businesses and factories open. The number of new cases fell to 18 on Friday, the lowest since the beginning of a surge in late February when the daily tally reached more than 900.

While both the U.S. and South Korea confirmed their first virus cases around the same time in late January, the number of infections in the U.S. has swelled to more than 700,000 while Korea “flattened the curve” last month and cases have slowed to just over 10,000.

We are in total agreement. But it's helpful to keep the full range in mind rather than the average. We may, through extraordinary means, reduce the deaths from this virus to the range of the common flu. That's fantastic. Keeping the range in mind rather than the average helps to highlight what's being achieved through these sacrifices.

Oh, I agree and we all will. I just don't get the other third. Now even my state has idiots protesting at the statehouse. Here is one quote, "I don't care if the virus was 10 times stronger, I'd still go out. I want my freedom." Darwin needs to get to work.

Sorry to hear man. My wife is a nurse at an assisted living home, but there are also wings for dementia, hospice and others. So far, all is good. However, a person had to go to the ER, and now they are on a 14 day quarantine just in case. No symptoms, and hopefully they decide to test her but as we all know. This stuff spreads like wild fire, especially in places like this, as you mentioned.

I guess I should have put in green font. I was being sarcastic. A sense of humor is something none of us can afford to lose.

Can’t you use Venmo and he could just toss it on your lawn, porch or whatever? Just trying to problem solve.

It's the cash. Tell him he's got to wash it, when he gets it home.
I've got crisp bills from washing them. it's either that, or he's gotta take a credit card.

Leave the finances in an envelope, on the porch. He gets it (with gloves), and drops the delivery.
Done deal. Drastic times call for drastic measures.
