What it does say is that Rose wants someone that can finagle and work contracts under the cap so he can build quickly and possibly target multiple players at once. Not necessarily a bad thing if the goal is to basically build through acquisition of established talent.
Good point. I'm not against a hybrid approach of trades/FA signings/drafting. It's probably what most teams do.
In fact, other than the most ideological tank commanders, even pro tank people know it's something (when it worked, to the extent it did), that's brief - you take some shots, accumulate the HOPEFULLY better talent from near the top of the draft, and importantly, get some extra picks and hold ALL your own picks. Until. Because there is no value in doing it forever. Until. Until a team feels ready and positioned, with a base of a few players, assets - which means expiring contracts or decent players or picks or all of the above - and then it has to do the harder next step, which is parlay that stuff into a better roster that fits.
I mean, if the Knicks suck for yet ANOTHER year after this draft, and this draft was good, I won't lose sleep over it, if they are holding next year's pick. I also wouldn't mind them drafting X player this year and then pivoting immediately towards FA signings/trades and even dealing SOME of their pick stash - for the right players\plan. Which is always the point, no matter how the team gets there.
