Re: Nets Going Forward: Planning for Next Season
Another possible issue with the Gobert deal is that it seems like KD/Ky/DJ all want to play together as the main guys.
DJ is past his prime IMO, but he can still give us a solid 20-25 minutes most nights.
Is Gobert going to make that much of a difference? Not sure.
I feel like both LeVert and Dinwiddie are already allstar level talents but lack the consistency.
Levert was KILLING it until the NBA had to shut down due to COVID19, and Dinwiddie was putting together a very good overall season(Minus 3pt % ouch)
I think they're going to roll with the 3 amigos next season, re-sign Joey Buckets and gamble on internal growth from guys like Spencer, Caris, Nic, Fro, etc.
We already have the 2 most difficult pieces to find, a legitiminate top 5 player superstar to be our #1 guy and a top 10-15 player to be their #2. I think GREAT depth could be a really strong #3 and we might not necesarily need another star to be that 3rd guy/Bosh type.

Tend to agree with this. This is why I think they'd keep one of LeVert or Dinwiddie in a deal for a guy like Gobert, if they did one at all.
Still think they look for the homerun on a wing or a guard, like Beal, Mitchell, Murray, McCollum, Oladipo, Jrue or even Tobias Harris or Buddy Hield as lower cost options.
It feels like that homerun trade just isn’t available. Players like Murray, McCollum, and Hield would make us worse defensively and they make so much money that it would kill our depth just to make the salaries match.
I don't know these players make us that much worse defensively. Dinwiddie and LeVert who have the physical tools to defend and have shown flashes, but are at absolute best average team defenders and mediocre individual defender.
Allen has tremendous defensive potential, but the reality is the stars and management prefer Jordan gets the burn and Allen mimics Jordan's skillset too much. The reality is, Allen is likely gone anyway, Claxton will be the youth to be groomed and another solid, ring chasing vet big man will be added via FA or a mid-season trade on the cheap.
I really think that depth is being overrated by a lot of fans and pundits. One Murray, McCollum or Jrue, highly outweighs 2 guys 60% their ability and impact individually. If Kyrie or KD go down longer than a dozen games each for rest and another 5 to 10 for little stuff, all the depth in the world isn't saving us.I think we’re coming back with pretty much the same roster. Maybe for luxury tax purposes we lose Temple.
This would shock me unless the teams who have the players we want aren't budging.Kyrie / LeVert / Prince / KD / DJ
Dinwiddie / Harris / TLC / Chandler / Allen
Chiozza / Anderson / Musa / Rodi / Claxton
Cap before all the Corona Virus stuff, was projected to be $139 million.
This lineup above is $155 million assuming Harris signs for 3 years at $36 million.
The only true concern is hard cap in all likelihood. Teams with title aspirations have always shown they'll go deep into the tax for 1 to 5 year periods.
Plus we'll see how things are adjusted because of the during and post-pandemic economy. Player salaries may wind up pulled back 15 to 25% for an entire extra season.Maybe it’s just me, but there’s no realistic homerun trade out there that outweighs the advantages of keeping our depth. I’d rather spread out the minutes, load manage KD and Kyrie, and have everyone fresh for the playoffs.
I think it's just you. Well, not just you as in the fans, or the pundits. A lot of them will agree with you. But I don't think KD, Kyrie, Tsai and Marks share your sentiment.
To beat a dead horse on my opinion perspective, for example... I think a lot of you guys wildly overrate the likelihood LeVert hits his ceiling and what LeVert's ceiling actually is, at least and especially on this roster. I love LeVert, one of my favorite Nets. So although we've seen what he can look like in short stretches when he's on and yes context... he's young, he's missed a lot of time to injury... he hasn't been able to work on his body in a get stronger/better/stamina way because he's always rehabbing... the bottomline is, sample size says he's currently just a good player who needs to be a focal point, at least as a 2nd option to really place his impact on the game.
Dinwiddie... Good player, underrated athlete, great contract for another year, still young and just entering his prime and certainly has some solid trade value... but... average efficiency at best, poor man's Iverson heroics attached with all that questionable decision making, attitude and some of the delusions of grandeur... as well as he has coexisted in stretches with other high usage players, he's also had multiple, multi-game stretches over the last 3 seasons where he is straight up detrimental to team success, on and off the court.
Allen, has great potential and is currently a good player. But does he really ever progress, or fully find his balls? He's a valuable player to have on a roster, he has real trade value, but he's currently replaceable. Right now literally by one of his teammates.
Kyrie is down for 21 games, I prefer Jamal Murray or CJ McCollum, etc., to be the one to be that depth, along with another vet min Temple level guy and hope one of the remaining youngins take a next step.
When did Jamal Murray become available? The Nuggets clearly love him, they just signed him to a 5 year $175 extension which hasn’t even started yet. Your assessment of LeVert and Dinwiddie was fair so why would Denver who are in championship contention mode, trade their young star for two flawed players with injury concerns and poor efficiency?
I don’t like McCollum because of his salary and his fit next to Kyrie. We would be the worst defensive backcourt in the league. McCollum can’t guard your local ice cream truck driver. In a league dominated by giants like KD, Kawhi, Lebron, Giannis, Simmons, Siakam, PG, Luka...why would you want to waste 30% of our salary cap on a pilon? The whole league is trending towards wings that can guard multiple positions and you want to waste $40 million on a guy that can’t guard even 1 position. At least Dinwiddie and LeVert have some length. McCollum is shorter than your local substitute teacher.
With depth, we can afford KD and Kyrie missing 10-15 games. Dinwiddie, LeVert, Harris, Prince, and Allen proved they are good enough to keep us in playoff contention.
Let’s end it with this. It’s easy to speak vaguely about how to improve the team, but can you give me an actual concrete trade proposal that makes sense for both teams?

I don't think Murray is very realistic, he's not the focal point of my debate though, probably shouldn't have ever mentioned him, cause he's an easy way for the detractors of adding a big name to deflect the overall idea. I mentioned him just as one of those, "You never know", out of nowhere guys, like a Harden years ago, or maybe Porzingis recently, though I'll readily admit the context around that was wildly different and didn't totally come out of nowhere.
Let's just agree to skip discussing him altogether, my fault lol.

Although my view on McCollum on the defensive end isn't as strong, I don't necessarily disagree with you. But, let's not act like LeVert, or especially Dinwiddie could or does guard any of those guys worth a lick either. In theory they can. In actual game time they have for a handful of plays through their careers. But for the most part when either has been matched up on guys like that, they get straight torched and abused, just like literally 90% of the league does.
With depth, we can afford KD and Kyrie missing 10-15 games. Dinwiddie, LeVert, Harris, Prince, and Allen proved they are good enough to keep us in playoff contention.
They've proven they can keep a team in a mid to high 30's window in a down year of a currently rising East, top to bottom. They are the type of depth you can definitely re-acquire without the name cache.
I'm not trying to throw out the great stretches these guys have had individually here and there, but it's like a lot of you guys like to in fact do the opposite, and throw away literally 240 games of below average mediocrity and poor play and talk only about 40 to 50 games which happened in random 8 to 15 game stretches over the last 4 seasons to define these guys. It usually doesn't work like that. For every Joe Johnson, who showed promise but was overall very mediocre his first 4 and 5 seasons, becoming a really good player, there are literally dozens of examples of guys who remained their normal Derek Anderson, Larry Hughes, Terry Rozier, OJ Mayo, Jamaal Crawford, certainly solid and usable, but easily attainable and replaceable, selves.
But that's not to say with their youth and potential tag, there aren't a number of GM's who do view them as possible building blocks and focus on those great runs. It happens all the time.
Let’s end it with this. It’s easy to speak vaguely about how to improve the team, but can you give me an actual concrete trade proposal that makes sense for both teams?
I think Beal is wildy more realistic than many will admit.
Same with Oladipo. He's a wildcard who everyone assumes is staying put, don't know I agree.
Though you hate the idea of McCollum, not sure the Nets brass would agree, and the Blazers might certainly listen.
Jrue isn't being shopped, but they will certainly be listening. Probably will move him.
I can definitely see Philly moving Tobias Harris and Sacto Hield, though they would be the lower cost, fit options.
Doubt Mitchell is as untouchable as you'd think and we see time and time again how much player and agent decide destination, restricted free agency be damned. Don't see him moved this off-season though.
Gordon Hayward is an outside possibility, can easily see him being moved, don't know if we'd deal with Boston though.
Gary Harris isn't talked about much, but he's an above average defender and a really good shooter who they sometimes struggle to get him time due to other contracts that can't, or don't want to move. He's one of the realistic guys from Denver, along with Barton.
We have a competitive package to put up against almost anyone in the league, who would actually bid on any of the above guys. You can tell me stuff like so and so will offer the 3rd overall pick and 2 future picks and stud young guy for Beal, but chances are his agent squash that with the quickness. They're going to say, keep me in Washington or move me to a team that I make a contender or guarantees me a top 3 shot at a chip. What teams who fit that bill have better than LeVert, Allen, Dinwiddie and picks?

Just asking for a realistic trade. Not a list of every single leftover scrap part other teams are trying to get rid of.
Lol no faith in Dinwiddie and LeVert but you want to bring more expensive worse players like Gordon Hayward and Gary Harris.

Re: Nets Going Forward: Planning for Next Season
My biggest concern is keep Joe.
Other than that, stay the corse...1000 points of light.....
I think this is good enough, I know Kyrie said early in the season "We need more pieces". But I think if our guys are all healthy we can do some damage. Plus there is nothing out there that is really worthwhile. We have a pretty solid roster 1-10.
It is being reported that Lue is interested in Head Coach position. I don't see Pop coming here, maybe Timmy?
Does Lue move the needle more than Jacque Vaughn?....I don''t see it.

Somebody I think would be an ideal fit on this team is Mikal Bridges. I don't know if he's at all attainable, but you if you start with Dinwiddie, maybe you can get the Suns to at least start to listen.

I think we all have to assume that the old way of doing things is completely dead. KD and Ky are running things and Marks is gonna pull the trigger on whatever they want to do. The cute stuff about building a team the right way and staying flexible is gone.
I think Joe and JA are 100% gone. LeVert might've done enough to earn the respect of the vets with his stretch at the end but he's probably out too. Prince, Rodi, Musa - 1000% gone. Claxton is a toss up. All our draft picks are on the table.
If this was a regular year, I think Covington would've been available again this off-season. I think we really focus on beefing up on big wings that can either shoot or defend. I wouldn't be surprised if we start going after real PFs again. It all depends on who the stars like. I could see us going after guys like Aaron Gordon. Older guys like Ariza, Crowder, Rudy Gay. I don't think KD wants to play with another legit star. Just wants roleplayers who won't screw up so him and Kyrie can shine.
The rotation locks are:
Kyrie
Dinwiddie
Temple
KD
DJ
The team is gonna look drastically different. All this stuff about waiting for development is over.
Ty Lue is probably the best option as a coach for this squad. He's dealt with big egos, divas, and Kyrie before. He has proven playoff experience. He's well respected around the league.
The only other option I see is Mark Jackson - which would make me stop following the team - or some random assistant who KD and Kyrie hand pick.

Are you like going to cry or something? Your whole post is “I think this... I think that” but zero evidence to back anything up.
On one hand you write “the team is going to look drastically different” then two sentences later you already know what the rotation locks are going to be next year.
What does the “old way of doing things” even mean? Didn’t realize we were in the 1960’s where trades and free agent signings were not allowed.
Any evidence to back up your claim that other than Tyrone Lue, Mark Jackson somehow is the ONLY OTHER OPTION? Did Sean Marks personally tell you that or is it just more of your usual dumbass opinions?

This is how I feel, with Kenny gone things are going to change drastically and I expect significant turnover. I would not be shocked if Joe Harris is not retained.
Allen and LeVert are definitely gone. I think Musa and Kurucs are out too, the time table is very slim so there's no more time to see if guys will turn a corner or not.
KD, Kyrie, Jordan, and Temple are the only guys I can predict for sure will be here next year. The moment KD said that the team wasn't displaying championship habits, you have to figure that Marks will want to load the roster with experienced veterans.
It sucks, but the days of "Brooklyn Grit" and youth are gone. We are in win now mode, and it's okay. This is the entire point.

I think you guys undervaluing development part. We got Rodi, Nic and first round pick to work with. Tsai and Marks invested significant amount of staff and D league team for a reason. Let's not forget Marks is great at finding diamonds around the world. Din, LeVert, Joe all came from nowhere. Some might not be as high on Nic and Rodi but I'm 100 convinced these guys legit rotation players on a chip team.
Can we go get another star? Sure, but at what cost. Some coming up with crazy stuff, no way we going to do Billy King here. Most were 100% behind Boston trade, to do 180 in a matter of month. Than acted as they never supported it. I questioned this KD and Kyrie direction from the door because I knew drastic changes would come along.
We not moving Din for sure, because Ky and LeVert brittle as it gets. He almost single handedly kept us in P.O. contention and is legit 2 unit scorer which every chip team needs. LeVert is an all star when healthy, problem is he never is. In order to keep him healthy load management is a must. Marks said they going to spend, Joe is one player that needs to be retained.
I'm back on a train where I think we should see what we got with this team first. However I do want to trade Allen for a first to give Nic rotation spot. I'll give Prince another shot just because he's contract ain't bad and very easy moveable. He can fetch first or be used as trade guy later on.
How's everyone been, hope you guys staying safe. This virus as we know now ain't no joke and here to stay for a while. Stay safe and good luck to all of us.

How many teams around the league got as much high talent and depth? Save you some time Clips and Bucks.
How many teams got as much trade assets? Not many.
I'm ready to give it another shot with healthy Ky and KD before making any trades and suggest we stay put till trade deadline at least.

Not sure why your feelings got hurt over a prediction post. You seem easily confused though.

Any evidence for this prediction or did it just come to you out of thin air?

If it was up to me, I'd roll with what we have outside of beefing up our wing defense + trying to upgrade Prince. I basically agree with all your evaluations. I think Rodi and Nic can be really impactful role players. I think CL and Allen can be starters on really good teams. Joe is obviously a perfect fit on every single team in the league. He's that good offensively.
I just think this year was a big shift in our culture and the team's mindset from the top. We all hoped that even while bringing stars in our culture would stay in tact. The grittiness, the effort, the patience, the focus on development. I think the year was kind of a failure in that sense. Just the fact that DJ not starting seemed to be a problem on the team says a lot. KD not wanting to play for Kenny next year. Kyrie causing problems in training camp about the offense + our biometric testing / training staff.
Like MDB said - I think we're going to go all in now. That means pushing for vets over guys like JA and Rodi. That means a coach that Kyrie and KD respect and like.
As for Joe - he's an unrestricted FA. After the messy year we had, I just see him going to the highest bidder and not wanting to deal with drama. He'll have a lot of options.

Isn't this a prediction thread? Why would I need Sean Marks as a source for a post on RealGM?
If you're asking why I feel that way - it's pretty simple. We need a coach that KD and Kyrie respect. That pretty much means it needs to be a former player who still has clout. You might disagree but if you read between the lines, I really think that's how they operate. We need someone with championship experience. That really cuts it down.
If a guy like that isn't available or doesn't fit, the only other option I see is an assistant who's really close with KD.
With Kenny, KD or Kyrie didn't like or respect him. And instead of standing up for their guy like the Heat did with Spoelstra, the organization backed down. That's all you need to know about how the coaching search is gonna go this off-season.

Thats basic common sense. Of course our star players are going to have input on who we hire. Anyone with half a brain understands that.
My question is how do you go from that...all the way to the ONLY OTHER OPTION outside of Ty Lue is somehow Mark Jackson. That’s what you said. I’m asking for information to back up this prediction. How did we narrow the field all the way down to just Mark Jackson?
Your Miami Heat analogy is irrelevant. Spoelstra was part of the Miami Heat organization for 15 years before Lebron arrived. The owner of the Heat didn’t initiate an effort to fire Spo, the players did. Our situation is not the same.
There’s multiple reports that Joe Tsai was the one who initiated the firing. He rightfully so did not have confidence that Kenny was coach of the future. Kenny from all accounts was a pain to be around. He was stubborn and refused to alter any of his offensive and defensive schemes. We had an entire lineup of 6”6 and up players who could switch everything defensively. Kenny wanted to drop back coverage when guarding PnR’s allowing every decent guard in the league to have career nights against. Bruce freaking Brown and Cam Reddish had the games of their lives against us because Kenny had no clue how to make in game adjustments. Opposing guard hits 10 straight wide open pull up j’s and Kenny would do nothing? Is that KD and Kyrie’s fault?
On offense, 4th quarter late game execution. Did you see any improvement on how we closed games? Every game we blew double digit leads like it was expected. No time outs, no substitutions. Just watch the lead slip away. Again do you have ANY LEGIT EVIDENCE that KD and Kyrie initiated the firing or maybe Joe Tsai got tired of sitting courtside to the Kenny “no lead is safe” Atkinson show.
David Nwaba, Nic Claxton, Rodi... 3 players we were trying to develop. They play 1 game then we don’t see them for 2 months. Was that KD and Kyrie’s fault? Did Coach Spo pull BS like that?
Look around the league. Every star player has influence on the organization. I don’t understand why fans like you attach some sort of negative connotation because the players are involved in the decision making process.
Look at your post history. It’s all just a bunch of...
“Oh no we fired Kenny...that means evil KD and Kyrie are in charge now! Hide the kids KD and Kyrie have taken over! Sean Marks is just a puppet now!”
Like F man... just relax.

You keep knocking my prediction that the coaching candidates are Lue, Jackson, or an assistant coach around the league. Don't know why you're so fixated on that. Who else do you think is in the running? Drop some names if you think it's a ridiculous idea.
Some of us can see the writing on the wall. Player input is fine. That's part of the game. When the players are lobbying to start DJ because he's their friend and it's a source of tension in the locker room - something is wrong with the dynamic.
There are reports that Kyrie soured on Kenny in training camp and that by midseason KD let it be known he didn't want to play for Kenny when he returned. You can dance around and say it was Tsai/Marks but they don't really have a much of a choice when that's happening. Especially when the players don't play hard. It's not rocket science. Every player except Kenneth Faried before this year loved Kenny. Those drop back coverages you're complaining about randomly had us top 10 in the league in defense. We constantly overachieved. He didn't even get a season before the guys quit on him.
You're telling me to relax? You got hurt over a post I made predicting what the off-season would look like. If you went through my post history, you'd see I've barely posted here since the season shut down. I'm chilling.

There’s a difference between predicting Mark Jackson is a potential candidate to be the next coach and what you did which is eliminate every one else and say Mark Jackson is THE ONLY OTHER option.
Jarrett Allen is a 21 year old Center. Like literally every other young player in the league, he was having long stretches where he didn’t look engaged and wasn’t playing with enough intensity. Do you agree with that or am I lying?
Did Jarrett Allen become Hakeem f’ing Olajuwon this year? Is he immune from being benched for poor play? Every team in the league benches young players when they don’t perform well for long stretches yet when we do it, it must be evil KD and Kyrie strike again. If Nick Nurse was here and he benched him, would you still be crying?
“When the players are lobbying to start DJ because he's their friend and it's a source of tension in the locker room - something is wrong with the dynamic.”
Oh no a little tension in the locker room? A sports team with a bunch of highly competitive alpha-males now have to handle a little tension in the locker room? We must be the first team ever to have a little tension in the locker room. How on Earth are they ever going to handle that?
I don’t get why fans like you over dramatize every little thing. We bench someone and it’s the end of world. Players get benched. Not the end of the world. Every locker room and workplace has tension. It’s part of the human experience.
Marks talked about him and Kenny having philosophical differences which went on for months before the firing. We led the league in most blown double digit leads. Worst PnR defense for two straight years. Worst 4th quarter offense in the league. I gave you reasonable evidence on why Kenny didn’t deserve to be brought back, but it sounds like you’re hell-bent on pinning this on evil KD and Kyrie.

7footMONSTER wrote:Just asking for a realistic trade. Not a list of every single leftover scrap part other teams are trying to get rid of.
LeVert and/or Dinwiddie, Allen, Musa or Rodi, Sixers pick, 1 or 2 future 1st round pick(s) with some reasonable protections for Beal is a good offer for the Wizards imho.
I've suggested this trade in many flavors, many times. You can expand it 70 different ways into a 3 or 4 team deal to send a better draft pick back to Washington, in a realistic deal for the other team(s) while still sending Washington most of the assets.
Say Phoenix winds up picking 9th. You can probably send Dinwiddie and the Sixers pick there for that pick.
Might be able to pull off the same for Donovan Mitchell around the deadline.
I think a similar package could get it done for Oladipo, with Allen going elsewhere, with some of the picks taken out.
Maybe something like Dipo/Myles Turner for Allen/LeVert/Musa/Prince/Sixers picks/future picks.
I'd even think about passing on a deal like this and keeping LeVert and try to pull off Dinwiddie and Allen for Turner.
I'd bet McCollum could be had for something along the lines of Allen, Prince, Musa or Rodi and LeVert or Dinwiddie and a pick.
I'd do that for sure if we kept LeVert.
Could they land Tobias Harris for Dinwiddie, Prince, Rodi or Musa, Allen to a third team and a pick? I think it's a real possibility.
Is it worth it if you can get Hield for LeVert/Prince and a pick?
Lol no faith in Dinwiddie and LeVert but you want to bring more expensive worse players like Gordon Hayward and Gary Harris.
I don't see how you can argue either of them vs. Gordon Hayward, I just don't.
Does LeVert have a higher ceiling then Gary Harris? Is he more talented/skilled? Probably yes on both. But what's the likelihood he achieves that ceiling? Overall careers thus far, they're about even.
Gary Harris is a good overall player who can shoot the lights out and is an extremely underrated defender. He's young and has remaining ceiling himself and is someone probably quite available because he's somewhat redundant on Denver's roster and the fact he's coming off a down year, going into a weird salary cap situation.
All that said, he's a guy you can almost definitely add without giving up either of Dinwiddie or LeVert, even Allen. You can probably send something like Prince, a 1st round pick and Musa or Rodi and get it done. He's a guy you essentially add knowing it's going to be hard to keep Harris and even more so if a separate trade for a star does kill most of your depth.

Yes, most definitely a fan of a move like this.
I'd love if they could find a way to send something like Dinwiddie, Musa, Prince and a 1st round pick for him and Rubio.
