Re: 2020 NFL DRAFT OFFICIAL thread
In a vacuum, I would think this is a great trade. If we never had 13, this would be a fantastic move. But I just don't understand passing on a 12-year fix at the position in Tristan Wirfs.

I understand you’re looking towards the figure but we’re trying to win now, that much is obvious. We needed a disruptive replacement for Buckner now, we needed another weapon for Kyle and Jimmy now, we needed a pro bowl tackle now. Unless of course you think that Wirfs is better than Trent Willams and in which case I would 150% disagree

If what Lynch/Shanahan is accurate, then the reason would be that Kinlaw was #1 on their list of "6 foundational players" and Wirfs was not. If they took Wirfs at #13, then they would not get Kinlaw. When their top listed player was still available, it would be a no-brainer for them to get their #1 guy. I would also guess that they have been in contact with Williams and were more comfortable taking an experienced guy at LT rather than putting a rookie out there. A rookie at DT can at least be somewhat protected playing between guys like Bosa, Armstead and Ford, plus he will get plenty of relief from guys like Thomas, DJ and Blair rotating in and out. A LT is pretty much out there most/all of the time barring an injury.

Yup. Long term planning makes sense, but with this team in it's superbowl window, I don't mind having a proven probowler who could step right in from day one and play at an elite level for a couple years.

Wirfs is good, but he's no Trent Williams. And Kenlaw is going to beast IMO.

This move sounds like they're loading up for another SB run. If that's the case.... WHY THE CRAP DID THEY IGNORE CB???!!!???
This has happened every time the Niners competed fora SB. They left a big ol' hole in the defense somewhere, and it came back to bite them in the SB / NFCCG, and every time it was CB.
They better have a plan to upgrade the CB situation, or they're going to get the same result.
...Mike Person in the starting lineup being inexcusable notwithstanding.

In an ideal world, we'd be able to grab a top CB in the early rounds. But without a 2nd or 3rd rounder, that wasn't possible. So I must assume that Shanahan/Saleh are confident that EMan can hold his own as a starting CB. K'Waun seems very solid for a nickel slot corner and we need Witherspoon to get through the mental blocks to be our back-up. With limited assets to fill our holes this off-season, it becomes more critical to address our defensive backfield next off-season since we were focused on filling our missing weapons at OT, WR and DT this time around.
Although I am still hoping that we can quickly trade Goodwin for a pick that turns into a CB like Bryce Hall but I'm getting doubtful with every passing minute.

Best case scenario Witherspoon doesn't see the field at all. I like Mosley and Williams.

Niners should have made CB their top priority in FA. They could've cut Kwon and signed a CB; Greenlaw filled in nicely anyway.
2012: They go into the season with a s**tty CB situation on one side (and lacking 5-tech depth).
2013: They go into the season with a s**tty CB situation on one side (and lacking 5-tech depth).
2019: They go into the playoffs with an absolute abomination at RG and a s**tty CB situation at nickel.
...Why do they leave these gaping holes on teams who can compete for a SB? Just get someone decent; I'm not saying find a pro bowler. Even though the Rams lost the SB, at least they went all in for the run they made. That's what you have to do.
I will never get over Mike Person starting in the SB, and if the Niners lose again this year, I will never get over not going after a CB in FA this offseason. They friggn' better have a plan...

This doesn't makes sense: just "get someone decent" by cutting K'Wuan? I consider Williams more than decent, so we already met your objective without cutting him. As a nickel back, his salary is less than a starting outside CB. I think going with Sherman, EMan and Williams gives us solid corner play that more than meets your criteria of being "just decent". Witherspoon is the one who has been problematic, but his problem seems to be more of positioning and tracking the ball rather than a physical shortcoming. He has excellent size and good speed; you can't teach that. I think learning where to position yourself and learning to track the ball is something that can be coached up more so than a lack of height, length or speed.

I liked Breida but our backfield was over-crowded. When McKinnon reworked his contract, I figured that would be the end of the Breida era. Holding onto the ball is important.

yea, and if anyone could take an undrafted/late pick and turn them into a star running back it's bobby turner and the shahahans, so I'm not to worried about it.

I'm a bit puzzled by this pick. McKivitz is a tackle where we now have Williams, McGlinchey, Coleman and Skule. With RG an open competition (although I assume Brunskill will win the job) and Richburg coming off a bad injury, I would have thought picking an interior lineman would be a higher priority than another OT.

The redskins have drafted extremely well. Antonio Gandy-Golden is going to be a spectacular weapon for them.
