Re: Grade the 2020 Packers Draft
I think a lot of what you saw here was Gute and LaFleur trying to maximize their shared vision. They took a year with what was left over from the McCarthy regime on offense, saw the deficits, and the limitations imposed within LaFleur's preferred play style, and adjusted accordingly.
The lack of receivers was obviously the biggest surprise in this draft. It does make think that they're high on Lazard and possibly EQ, Kumerow, MVS, and/or Shep. I personally am still pretty intrigued by Lazard and EQ. I'm less intrigued by MVS because of his hands, but Rodgers also missed him on some big throws. Kumerow and Shep haven't shown much yet. That doesn't even mention Funchess. That's six guys in addition to Te.
If you can really nail three of them (my guess is that Funchess, Lazard, and EQ), you're set with Adams as your fourth and then the TEs in Jace, Deguara, Marcedes, and Tonyan. Perhaps that's enough from their POV. And maybe they've got their eyes on adding another by trade or after cuts.
I'm personally more concerned that the front seven still needs work, even after adding Kirksey and perhaps a healthy Burks. They got absolutely mauled at times. Part of that was Pettine, IMO, and his unwillingness to adjust. But I think we still needed another quality ILB or DL. Maybe Adams will finally bust out?

C-:
I kind of like the concept of drafting a QB now to be ready to replace Aaron in a few yrs. And Love gives you tools + mixed results on the field as reasons he could wind up a steal. In which case he'd practically make the draft by himself.
But Love didn't fill a need nor is win now. And are lot of guys afterward, while also giving the Packers suspect value. May require surprises later, looking at the OL, to salvage much of significance on the impact or need front. No promising MLB or DL.
I guess I diverge with most others in thinking wr was a huge need. Valdes-Scantling dropped off playing thru an injury. Plus got Funchess. Lazard is developing. Solid top 4. Could use a slot I suppose.
I think the picks in the mid rounds may have been made with an eye to establish a power run game, which would give them a role, but doesn't justify reaching.

Just awful. So bad. Can't believe we have Gute as a GM. Trust me, I know a lot about this stuff and it was one of the worst drafts of all time

I'm not sure if this has been posted, but they also picked up Reggie Begelton, CFL player for Calgary Stampeders. I wasn't even aware he was on the team until ten days ago. Last year he had 102 receptions for 1,444 yards and 10 TDs. He looks like a man among boys in his highlights, but I wouldn't be shocked if he made the team.

Calm down, next Draft we will have a lot of 4th round compensatory picks to draft a backup punter and perhaps a LS.

If this isn’t an F draft, I don’t know what is. Didn’t fill needs and reached on a lot of guys at odd positions. The Packers triumvirate all need to be on hot seat before they set this team back several decades.

I can't believe nobody is talking about how on day 3 we basically went all Big Ten.

Re: Grade the 2020 Packers Draft
At best it was a horribly managed draft.
I don't believe we needed to trade up and get Love, Colts rumor or not, especially with a non-immediate need. Gute and company also look like asses for claiming their initial target was a receiver, then getting none.
Far more likely that was an f you quote where BG knew he was going to pass on receivers the whole way. This draft reeks of the "we're so smart" GM/coach garbage that has defined us since the SB win.
Sure, some of these guys might end up being good, but the reaches in this draft where we took them is mind boggling.
Two years ago I said we needed two good drafts to resume being a legit contender to plug the holes left by TT. It sucks that we may have botched with Gary, but I can live with misses. This draft we ignored the rest of the holes completely. That's infuriating.

Don't do that to yourself. It only leads to disappointment.
My brother in law said he read we are going to be running a lot of 2 wr sets, so wr wasnt as big of a need as we think.
Maybe they think Funchess and the CFL dude are the upgrade they needed?
So ..
Adams
Funchess
CFL dude
Lazard
Kumerow
St Brown
Scantling
Two likely get cut. My guess is Kumerow and one of Gutes picks.
Adams is a lock. Rodgers likes Lazard. Geronimo is gone, with two other WRs gone.
There will likely be some cheaper vets getting cut as well that might be intriguing.

Kumerow had something like a second round tender put on him. No way I see him being cut.

Adams, Lazard, and Funchess are likely locks. Kumerow too, in part for the reasons you listed. I'd guess the guys on the bubble(today) would be Begelton(CFL dude), MVS, and ESB.
Begelton has to prove he can compete in the NFL
MVS has to shake off last years yips and perform more like he showed in 2018
ESB has to show he's recovered from his injuries (Rogers was pretty complimentary of his performance in 2018)

RiotPunch wrote:I agree. If AJ Dillon and Josiah Deguara were truly at the top of their boards at those picks, which I believe they were (at least on MLF's board) I have no issue with that at all, they got their guy. The issue for me is weighing your board versus league intel, consensus projections, etc. Which, maybe some other super savvy team was licking their chops for Dillon and we felt we had to grab him. Who knows. Felt like bad value though, as far as taking advantage of other teams go.
IF there's one thing I've learned in the 11 years I've "scouted" draft classes, there's no consensus. Draftniks are largely groupthink. You've got a few of them that think outside the box, but largely you're going to get relatively similar opinions. And you can lock 30 scouts in the same room watching the same team, and come away with 30 different opinions. That's the beauty of scouting. I'd rather go and get you guy then wait and hope your guys falls to them. A fourth round pick was a small price to pay in order to move up and grab your QBOTF. Look at what other teams spent moving up to get their QBOTF. We're talking about at least one future FRP. Or multiple premium picks.

you're high if you think we're taking a WR next year

And I get that. But this was an awful DL class outside of Brown and Kinlaw.

And which DL did they miss out on? The only one they might have missed out on was Simmons, and I'd imagine he was off the board.

Seriously ? Do some leg work. It was the year of the DL.
