The state [of Massachusetts] is reporting 1,316 people at long-term care facilities have died from COVID-19, which means that more than half of all fatalities in the state from the virus are at these facilities.

In Quebec that percentage is 60%.

I read that there's a daily average of 39,000 people living in assisted living homes in MA. 1,316 deaths would represent about 1 in every 30 nursing home patients. If you DON'T live in a nursing home, the death rate is about 1 in 5,300.

Objective: To study the usefulness of Ivermectin, an antimicrobial therapy, in COVID-19
outcomes.

Design: An international, multicenter, observational propensity-score matched case-controlled
study using prospectively collected data on patients diagnosed with COVID-19 between January
1, 2020 and March 31, 2020.

Setting: An international multi- institutional deidentified healthcare outcomes database.
Participants: Hospitalized patients diagnosed with COVID-19 determined by presence of a
positive laboratory finding confirming SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Exposure: Ivermectin (150mcg/Kg) administered once compared with COVID-19 patients
receiving medical therapy without ivermectin.

Main Outcome: The principal outcome was to assess the association of ivermectin
administration with survival in COVID-19.

Results: The cohort (including 704 ivermectin treated and 704 controls) was derived from 169
hospitals across 3 continents with COVID-19 illness. The patients were matched for age, sex, race
or ethnicity, comorbidities and a illness severity score (qSOFA). Of those requiring mechanical
ventilation fewer patients died in the ivermectin group (7.3% versus 21.3%) and overall death
rates were lower with ivermectin (1.4% versus 8.5%; HR 0.20 CI 95% 0.11-0.37, p<0.0001).

California only has 1,650 deaths, an insanely low percentage for a state saturated with international travel. If they managed that without closing down the beaches, more power to them.

Most beaches have been closed, I believe. It's been up to the counties. This weekend's crowds were at Orange County and Ventura County beaches. I think I read OC county reopened beaches two weeks ago. San Diego is set to reopen beaches tomorrow.

Cali has done a better job of flattening it's curve than possibly any other state, San Francisco county in particular has done an excellent job. Stuff like this has the potential to undermine Cali's efforts to date, though.

(JB, this is by no means an answer to your post. The situation is indeed depressing, and it may get even worse, but we'll have to keep doing this until there's a breakthrough somewhere.)

Just to be clear, Los Angeles County beaches are NOT open. Everything is closed here. We cannot go hiking anywhere in the hills. No parks. Nothing. The most we can do is go for a nice family drive. Today, I took my family to Lancaster to the Poppy Preserve - about an hour and 15 min drive. Can’t go into the preserve (it’s closed of course), but there are many amazing poppy fields leading up to it and we were able to get out, stretch our legs and take some amazing photos without being anywhere near anybody else. That is the extent of what we can “do” in LA. And it is working. Our aggressive early policies have limited the damage here in a pretty incredible way. Considering the population and the big cities, our contraction and death rates are incredibly low. We are sending medical personnel to NYC to help out.

Orange County and Ventura County are NOT LA. Not by a long shot. I wish them the best and I hope it works for them down there (OC) and up there (VC), but I think it is probably two weeks too early to open up the beaches. The weather has been really hot lately, so I get the temptation - but why mess with something that is working?
