I'm NH. And I have 6 year old I am home schooling. And let me tell you, being a HS teacher doesn't mean s*** when teaching a first grader, never mind your own son. But I am grateful and fortunate. Others have it way worse. But I do have my freak out moments haha. That's what the padded room is for.

Just to be clear, Los Angeles County beaches are NOT open. Everything is closed here. We cannot go hiking anywhere in the hills. No parks. Nothing. The most we can do is go for a nice family drive. Today, I took my family to Lancaster to the Poppy Preserve - about an hour and 15 min drive. Can’t go into the preserve (it’s closed of course), but there are many amazing poppy fields leading up to it and we were able to get out, stretch our legs and take some amazing photos without being anywhere near anybody else. That is the extent of what we can “do” in LA. And it is working. Our aggressive early policies have limited the damage here in a pretty incredible way. Considering the population and the big cities, our contraction and death rates are incredibly low. We are sending medical personnel to NYC to help out.

The poppy fields were among my favorite things growing up in the 1960s. I gather they've declined greatly since then, but I did go out to the preserve once decades later, and it least was worth the trip.

Has there been a comeback since then, or is it still just the one official preserve in Palmdale or Lancaster?

I certainly hope I am wrong - but decades of experience & the fact that I am a very very cautious, precise & informed clinician tell me that the disease will recrudesce in the many states that are opening up without the ability to perform sufficient surveillance testing.

The below graphics really drive home how different this virus is for different age groups. To date only 31 people in MA under age 50 have passed while having Corona. Of those how many had pre existing conditions or died from something besides Corona? On the flip side this virus is brutal on the elderly. I feel like this data can't be ignored when discussing strategies moving forward yet it is hardly mentioned. Population density is the other driving factors for cases, hospitalizations and deaths.







In addition to the pictures I posted they also show number of hospital beds available both ICU and non-ICU. They show cases and deaths by county. Cases by race and sex. Deaths by day. Hospitalized patients by day. Also sorts of info highly recommend checking it out.

20-29: 6807 confirmed cases / 113 hospitalizations = 1 hospitalization for every 60 confirmed cases
30-39: 8186 confirmed cases / 224 hospitalizations = 1 hospitalization for every 37 confirmed cases
40-49: 8220 confirmed cases / 387 hospitalizations = 1 hospitalization for every 21 confirmed cases

Factor in actual number of cases is significantly higher than confirmed cases and the 60/37/21 numbers would all increase significantly.

This, exactly. Here in Maryland, there have only been 32 deaths in the 49 and under crowd which is about 2/3 of the population. An amazingly low death rate. By contrast, the 70 and older crowd is only 11% of the population but they've suffered almost 600 deaths.

The strategy we're using now is wasting a lot of money and resources protecting the vast majority of the population in very low risk. If we took those resources and applied them to the 11% of the population at highest risk, I think we could achieve better outcomes.

Hey major respect, this sounds like an impossible situation you've been put in - even neurotypical adults are struggling to stick to routines right now, so I can only imagine how much work you have to do to mind your children. If you can just muddle through this and your kids are healthy and safe, that's an unbelievable success in my book.
