Yeah. And we absolutely shouldn't trade another pick for the privilege of setting the market for a FA. That option was on the table prior to the Winslow trade, and we bet on Winslow instead. I hope it works out, but we're no longer positioned to be players in FA. Our offseason is probably near stasis, which I'm basically ok with given how the team improved this year. But we might look back on this as the year we missed our chance to add the final piece.

I still prefer Winslow over any available FA. Do you?

The cost could be a bit less than a first round pick if Memphis does some work and has a few things go the right way for them. Less likely to get done without a first, but cross fingers and at least make some phone calls.

Example for demonstration purposes:

* Charlotte or similar wants to be somewhat respectable and not crater. So they will trade for a Memphis center

* Wood can be signed for a good contract that makes this path/scenario possible

Chicago
In: Zeller, Cash ($4 million), two second round picks from Memphis cupboard
Out: Felcio

Charlotte
In: JV, second round pick from Memphis cupboard
Out: Zeller

Memphis
In: Felicio
Out: JV, Cash ($4 million), three second round picks

Memphis then stretch waives Felicio and has enough cap space to sign Wood. Memphis would need to run the numbers beforehand to make sure that they will have enough cap space to sign Wood after Felicio is stretch waived.

Memphis -- Clears some cap space for Wood

Charlotte -- Improves at center and gets a second round pick.

Chicago -- Gets cash and two second round picks for the cap space difference ($7.9 million) between Felicio and Zeller.

..............................2020-21..........2021-22...
Cody Zeller.............$15,415,730....................

Cristiano Felício.........$7,529,020....................

Jonas Valančiūnas......$15,000,000.....$14,000,000

Gorgui Dieng............$17,287,640....................

It becomes trickier if Charlotte wants Dieng instead of JV and the second. Memphis would be able to clear a bit more cap space with Dieng going out instead of JV, but there would be overlap with JV and Wood in the 2021-22 season.

I thought of a different player than Felicio with a slightly smaller contract on a different team as a good candidate for this trade, but some in the fanbase think that he is worth a second round pick while I think that he is just a half step above Felicio as bad money. So I went with Felicio rather than argue about the trade value of another player.

Memphis would need to be creative and make some calls, but maybe they could get a bit lucky and get something like the above to happen.

Yeah, probably. But over all the stuff I might be able to go shopping for with cap space equal to his salary, Dieng's salary, Waiters' salary and some minor assets for Iggy and Crowder's useful expiring contracts? No.

Pistons will retain Wood so any team jumping through hoops to have a shot is likely wasting their time.

Wood has bounced around the league a bit and was finally given his shot by the Pistons. I seriously doubt he leaves.

It is up to Woods, not Detroit, as he is UFA.

True but I'd like to think he'd give the Pistons a chance to match his best offer since we have him his shot.

Ideas from a Piston fan:

Kennard to Phoenix for #10 on Draft Day.

Pistons select Okoro at #5 & Vassell at #10 to lock down the wing positions.

Trade Snell to GSW for their TPE.

Trade Blake Griffin to Utah for Mike Conley straight up.

Retain Wood, upgrade Hall & Bone to legit NBA contracts, bring back Henson & Maker on 1 + 1 deals:

Wood, Henson
Sekou, Hall
Okoro, Svi
Brown, Vassell, Thomas
Conley, Rose, Bone

With whatever cap space is left grab another vet big and look to the 2021 Draft for a stud.

Wood, Sekou, Okoro, Vassell, Brown, Bone, Svi & Hall may or may not develop into something but at least they're young and have upside.

20/21 season is all about taking their lumps and learning.

We should take the Nets/Miami approach and build from within for a couple of years and see what happens after that.

I don't see Utah doing that deal. No wants 38m Blake on the books in 21. Conley was back to close his old self the last few weeks of the season.

Snell to GSW has a chance but I am not as enthusiastic as GSW fans in thinking they will use that TPE on any decent player. Snell would cost them something like 52 million in salary and taxes.

Kennard for 10 would be a good deal for Detroit.
