this is like caring about Tyler Herro's wingspan which was laughable last year

most useless convo circa 2019

Why measure players at all then?

you can measure whatever you want for all I care, but talking wingspan for a player like Butler is useless just like it was useless for Herro

Definitely matters on the defensive side. Offensive too. Short arms make it harder to finish in the NBA. If you just want a gunner, go with Howard.

Herro is still a negative on the court. That might change, but as it stands, he's a big fat negative (-3.04 PIPM).

Agreed, but in comparison to all other rookies, it's near the bottom.

Deron Williams' wingspan was 6'6.25". It didn't hold him back. An extra couple inches of wingspan might help him guard 2s, but I don't think it's a deal breaker. His movement and anticipation are far more important.

His wingspan is closer to 6'4 though. How many successful point guards have there been with that kind of wingspan?

Of course, choose a couple of all time greats. We know Butler isn't going to be CP3 or Curry or any of these other guys.

CP3 = 6'4
Curry = 6'4
Kyrie = 6'4
Trae = 6'2
Kemba = 6'4

Rose = 6'8
Conley Jr. = 6'6

guys in bold were way more proven coming out of college. butler is coming in at best as a fringe FRP.

Butler will be a good back up. He's NOT going to be any of these guys.

okay first of all, don't move the goal posts, this isn't about Butler vs. any of those guys, this is about you asking 'how many successful PGs have that wingspan'

second of all, i literally just rattled off a bunch off the top of my head.

now the onus is on you to prove wingspan and PG success has a positive correlation (or better yet, causation). go.

Morant
Gilgeous-Alexander
Simmons
Harden
Rubio
Dragic
Westbrook
Isiah Thomas
Magic Johnson
Big O
Hardaway
Kidd
Wall
Payton
Andre Miller
Rondo
Francis
Deron Williams

The list goes on.

The paper, authored by Tesla Monson, Ph.D., a biological anthropologist who conducted the study at the University of California Berkeley but is now at the University of Zurich, focuses on the link between wingspan and athletic ability. Basketball scouts have long recognized wingspan as an important indicator of athletic potential, but the relationship was never studied in great detail. Monson’s study on the physical attributes of top NBA players shows that wingspan is indeed an important determinant of success: In fact, when she looked at the wingspan-to-height ratios of top players like Lebron James. Kawhi Leonard, Jon Jones, James Harden and Stephen Curry, all but Curry have arm spans that are relatively greater than their height.
